Last condo Sheba was a bit off her food and a bit quiet. An hour before PMPS she had 2 vomits and immediately seemed better. Her appetite seemed back to normal soon afterwards. I was not sure if she was going to vomit more so at PMPS I fed her and delayed the insulin by one hour to make sure she kept it down.
She is not one to vomit except if she bolts down her food, and early in the morning or just before dinner. It is either frothy or liquid and I am sure it is from excess acid in the tummy. She usually only vomits the once though so the two big vomits were unusual. She has done this intermittently for at least two or more years. I can usually manage it by making sure she has a little bit of food in her tummy all the time and it usually only happens every so often.

She had an apt at the vet for her cartrophen booster for arthritis this morning, so I mentioned the acid tummy and vomiting. She is going to have losec for 4 days and then trial carafate to see if it helps. I think you call it something else in the UK and US. It is a protector. I asked him if it would be ok to give slippery elm bark powder but he had not heard it used for that....he will look into it. I don't know much about SEB so would be really interested if someone could fill me in on the benefits of it in relation to acid tummies please.

I took in my auto feeder to show the vet as he had asked if he could see it. Both he and the vet nurses were really interested in it....thought it was great......and I am going to send them the link. They all said it would be good for their cats as well as diabetic cats.

I was taking Sheba's bsl today and my 7 year old dgd said "what is it.......I hope she didn't drop too quickly"
I had to smile........ All the kids understand the bsl numbers and often ask what it is. They know they can't drop food on the floor and why and will always tell me if they see Sheba eating anything off the floor.

Sheba had a great cycle yesterday morning and then bounced last night........I can't see why though.....still high AMPS today but diving down now.....100 points between +3.5 and +4.5.:eek: Have given her a drop of honey to slow the drop but she will probably bounce again from that 100 points drop in one hour.:banghead:

She seems well again today....doesn't like the vet visits..and always glad to be home again.

    How adorable is that???

I can't help with the SEB....I know @Tricia & Cinco uses it quite often with pretty good success

The Losec (Prilosec here in the US) is a high power acid reducer usually reserved here for people with active ulcers. Carafate coats the lining of the stomach to help protect it against the acid

Do you have anything like Pepcid there? (Famotadine) Here's it's over the counter, but I know the laws are a lot stricter there. A lot of us use 1/4 of a 10mg tablet for kitties with acid problems

OK now Sheba....slow it down there girl! There's no reason to hurry!! There's plenty of room at the lagoon!

    Hi Bron.

Actually, @Marje and Gracie knows a lot more about SEB than I do. I give it to Minka when she's feeling off and it seems to help. The biggest drawback is you can't give it within 2 hours of other oral meds as it coats the stomach and inhibits the absorption of the meds. There is more info on Tanya's site.

I also give Pepcid to three of my cats for acid stomach. It seems to help, too.

Sorry to hear about the vomiting. I hope it's an isolated incident and Sheba is all better.

Love the family understanding and participation!!!

Hi Bron, glad to hear that Sheba is feeling better. That was a big dive but hopefully she is levelling out now for you. You've taught you grandchildren well, any budding vets amongst them?

Lots of folks use SEB in the IBD Kitty group with really good success. Here are some instructions from the website: http://www.ibdkitties.net/Tipsandtricks.html
Tip #1: When giving slippery elm bark, take a tablespoon of hot water and mix it with about 1/2 capsule of SEB
powder. As it starts to cool, it will thicken. Sometimes you can add more powder and sometimes more water to
get it to a thin enough consistency that you can fill a syringe. The easiest syringe to use is a 3ml, and fill
completely. Then insert the syringe in the back corner of your cat's mouth and let them drink it down. Just be
sure to make it as thick as possible as it helps coat the lining of the GI tract, similar to Pepto Bismol. (NEVER use
Pepto Bismol or Kaopectate). You can also use mix about 1/4 teaspoon of slippery elm bark powder with hot
water for every 10 pounds of body weight. Mix well and let cool. They call it a "liquid band aid". Slippery elm
should be given at least two hours away from any other medications or supplements. 30 minutes isn't long
enough for the mucilagenous coating in the digestive tract to dilute enough to let absorption take place, mostly in
the intestines. Many holistic vets believe that when given with a meal, it can inhibit the absorption of nutrients
from the food. Here is the SEB that I use: Celebration Herbals Slippery Elm Bark Powder Bulk Tea Caffeine Free

I make a syrup with it using the following recipe:

Into a small saucepan place 1/2 cup cold water and 1 teaspoon powdered slippery elm bark. Whip with a fork. Bring to simmer over low flame, stirring constantly. Simmer 1 or 2 minutes or until slightly thickened. Cool and refrigerate. Keeps 7 or 8 days. Give a teaspoon of syrup (5 cc) for an average-size cat (again, about 10 pounds) 5 minutes before a meal to minimize diarrhea, or to soothe and heal mouth ulcers.

You want to sure it is pure SEB powder; I buy just a very small quantity at the health food store.

Gracie has done the same thing occasionally and whenever she does it, her liver values are up a bit. They've never been able to figure out why....she has no symptoms of anything and her u/s have been normal.

I hope she feels better soon. Sending vines!

Hi Chris...we can't get things like Pepcid over the counter out here unfortunately. I asked the vet about Pepcid, Zantac etc, but he said he would rather use the losec for a couple of days and also try the carafate to see how she went on it. He said that losec was the drug of choice to use now ......we are not going to use it for long though.
That is why I was interested in the SEB. I thought it sounded like a good long term solution. Thanks:)

Hi Tricia.......thanks for the info.....do you give the SEB and Pepcid at the same time or the same day?

Hi Suki.....yes, she loves to dive....always in a hurry....it is her personality!
All the kids are very interested in animals in general...and I try and foster that....and kindness to animals. Not sure about vets though. My son wanted desperately to be a vet, did the work experience in the country where we lived......the vet used to call up to our place and get him when there was a cow who needed a Caesarian or something.....but the marks were so high and he just missed out by 0.6 of a mark...nearly broke his heart.

Bron, I don't give the SEB with pepcid or within two hours of any meds - it will inhibit their absorption. I do give them the same day. Minka gets her Pepcid first thing in the morning and I usually give the SEB in the afternoon.

You can put the powder in food, if Sheba will eat it. My Sasha didn't mind it, but Minka won't touch it, so I put it into gelcaps and shoot it down her throat. Poor baby, she gets so many pills it's just a couple more (takes two #3 gelcaps to give her a day's dose).

You can get straight SEB from Coles now - Coles brand - it's hidden on a low shelf and in an odd place - sorry I can't remember what it was near now but I guess the staff should be able to direct you.

So cute on the dgc :)

I hope the meds help Sheba's tummy. Good luck if you try the SEB. I agree. So cute with your DGD.

    @Vyktors Mum
Thanks Serryn...I have a Coles near me so will go and have a look and see if I can find it there. I was going to go to the local health food store, but Coles will probably be a lot cheaper.
How is Vyktor's mouth now? I read that one of the meds I got today, Carafate, is a protectant, and is good for mouth ulcers? I thought of Vyktor.

Hope the slippery elm bark helps miss Sheba! My dad used to take it but I don't know much about it.
