Thank you, Diana. :bighug: I'm so glad you were here this morning. I'm sorry I didn't get to post to let you know the taxi had arrived to take us to the vets.

Talking of the vets, it's Saoirse's main vet looking after her. He really cares about her.

I only read your thread very late, Mogs - it's the overseas crew who kept you going. And don't apologise - we knew you were en route to the vet.
It will help a lot if Saoirse has a vet who cares about her - she will feel that and it will be reassuring for her (as it is for you).
Try and get some rest if you can - maybe lie on the sofa and play some soothing music?

I'm on the sofa with a duvet over my legs. I'm so cold from the shock. I'm cuddling the fleecy blanket that Saoirse and I share to my heart and trying to send comforting thoughts to her.

Got a lot of tears out. Helped to get rid of some of the stress hormones.

Mogs, there's a saying hat goes around on Facebook every now and again, and it surely fits this case, it goes like this:

"You never know how strong you are, until being strong is your only option".

I hope you can find some comfort, both mental and physical, in knowing that everything that can be done, is being done and that you've done a wonderful job taking care of Saoirse.

A calming technique I learned about 18 years ago when my husband was very ill, using your hands, gently rest your thumb pads on your cheekbones and very gently slide your finger tips across your forehead and temples. I also find that gently rubbing into the hairline and making some circular motions and slight pressure along the hairline of your temples feels wonderful.

Mogs, I'm just catching up. Sorry you and Saoirse are going through this. Like everyone says.......breathe and breathe again. Both of you are in panic mode. For you to help Saoirse, please try to relax a little. She will pick up your anxiety. Can you grab a cup of tea and a great big pillow and blanket? Sit on the floor next to her, talk to her, sing to her or just sit quiet watch tv. She will calm down when you do. She is confused and will startle easily. You can do this, you can do this.....

Oh my goodness, (((Mogs))). Have just seen this thread...

Hang in there, sweetie. We're all here for you. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Try to get some rest while Saoirse is the vets.
And drink plenty of water to flush those stress hormones through your system.

Abdominal breathing works for me (especially when I get panic attacks at night).
Put your hand on your abdomen and feel it rise and fall as you slowly breathe in and out. Counting maybe to 4 or 5, or whatever feels comfortable for you, can also help to give a focus initially. You'll start breathing more deeply and that will relax you a bit. As your attention shifts to your body you will feel less 'in your head', and that in itself has a calming effect.

Sending prayers that Saoirse recovers very soon.

Ok Mogs, now it's time to take care of you. You need to get centered so when she does see you, she won't pick up on that fear. Don't load yourself up with anything sugary, because you'll crash once the sugar has worn off.
You could probably use some potassium, because you will be depleted from the stress. Do you have any bananas in the house? If not bananas, how about some potatoes? Potatoes are high in potassium. Mix up a dish of mashed potatoes and gravy to help you sleep.

If you have beta blockers, that is good. Warm milk is good. And believe it or not, dark chocolate is good. The higher the concentration of cocoa, the better. 1.4 oz of dark chocolate will cause a release of endorphins.

Put down the mars bar, though. That's got too much overall sugar. Do you have any cocoa in the house? Use double the amount of cocoa, to make a strong chocolate drink..it'll be bitter, but bitter is good.

Ok now go to bed. Do a hot bath first if need be..but what you'll need most is sleep.:bighug:Go on now, scoot. To bed with you.

Thank you, Eliz and Jeanne for being there for us. :bighug::bighug:

Haven't been able to sleep. Exhausted and so cold. Tears still coming but they'll get rid of some more stress hormones. Alternating between numbness and fear.

Thank you, everyone, for being here. So grateful.

    Hi Mogs,

I wish I'd seen this before you went to pick up Saoirse.
How is your baby doing now??
Is she still feeling nauseated, gagging, signs of pain??

A bleed in the anterior chamber in the eye can block the 'trabecular meshwork' (eyes drainage mechanism) this can cause a rise in intraoccular pressure, if it rises sharply and high enough it can be very painful and in humans certainly causes nausea, and might well explain her behavior yesterday. The bleed will eventually clear out, and until it does it's going to be near impossible to tell what caused it. The most common cause of an anterior chamber bleed in humans at any rate is trauma. Has she had any knocks been scrapping with other cats?

Do you know if your vet was able to check her intraocular pressure ( I imagine it would be difficult if not impossible to do without sedation)
If her intraocular pressure is raised they may be able to give her eye drops to help relieve the pain and eye pressure and limit inflammation. It's worth asking your vet about.

    prayers and hugs :bighug::bighug::bighug:

(((((Mogs and Saoirse)))))). I am also just seeing this right now and I'm so sorry I didn't see it sooner. You are stronger than you know because you made it through a horribly scary night. Your baby feels your love and knows she is the center of your heart and soul and that will provide her healing.

Update: Saoirse is Back Home from the Vets
    -------------------------------------------------------------

The vets managed to get a large enough blood draw to run some in-house tests as well as sending samples to IDEXX for more precise assays. They have examined her eye and checked her heart rate and blood pressure.

Preliminary Findings - In-house Blood Tests and General Physical Exam:

BUN - back in reference range.
Creatinine - stayed in reference range.
Phosphorus - increased from 1.57 to c. 1.6. (Not great - higher dose of phosphorus binder was given since 1.57 reading at beginning of November. She eats a food too high in phosphorus because it's the only one I've found that she can tolerate pancreatitis-wise.)
Thyroid - Just below lower limit of reference range in November. Now in reference range but higher. Vet thinks it is a possibility that other issues may have been masking hyperthyroidism. However, for the very reason that Saoirse has other endocrine issues it's not certain. Waiting on IDEXX assay before doing anything further and will run another panel in 3-4 weeks' time. (Had to ask him to repeat that particular phrase. Asked if Saoirse was in any immediate danger and he replied in the negative - anti-jinx, anti-jinx.)

Liver markers - don't recall them being mentioned but that is no guarantee they weren't, given my current mental state. If there was anything really iffy I would have remembered.

Elevated blood pressure - 175 (ref range 135-170). Rx: Amodip (amlodipine) 14 days then re-evaluate.
Heart rate - fast (didn't specify pulse rate).

Saoirse was very stressed as is normal for her at the vets. She was very scared, too, and in pain so the vet doesn't know how valid the measurements are. He is going to visit us at home at the beginning of next week to get a more reliable measurement of BP and heart rate. (Last home BP check was 140.)

    Eyes:

As posted earlier, at this morning's vet consult, Saoirse's eye was cloudy. Vet used medication to dilate the pupil and tried to determine what was happening inside Saoirse's eye. Both eyes were checked for surface lesions.

The unaffected eye is OK so far (anti-jinx, anti-jinx). The affected eye has some ulceration which the vet thinks may possibly have arisen secondary to inflammation in the eye; the irritation may have caused Saoirse to rub at the eye, giving rise to the ulcer. I'm a bit fuzzy on the source of the bleeding (my head is even more of a mess than usual) but I think he said it was from the ulcer. Meds dispensed to soothe the affected eye (Isathal eye drops) and drops to dilate the pupil (Minims Tropicamide) in order to prevent adhesions and hopefully enable a more thorough exam to determine exactly what's going on. He had no opinion on what caused her to retch and be so nauseated overnight but suggests it may have been down to stress. I did advise him that the little bit of discharge I wiped away from Saoirse's eye last night had a pale pink tinge to it. I asked whether it was possible that some blood/other fluid drained through Saoirse's sinuses and therefore she may have swallowed it resulting in the gagging and major clinical signs of nausea which I observed last night but he didn't think that was likely. Based on the number of doses of the pupil dilation med dispensed he plans to re-examine the affected eye on Monday.

    --------------------

(A bit more to follow shortly ...)

What a night and day you and Saoirse have had, Mogs! I'm SO glad to see that she's doing well enough to come home to you! Now you both need some rest to recuperate. I know, you will want to watch her like a hawk. But do get some rest, for her sake. Remember, you and Saoirse made it this far, you both will get through this together.

Very heartened by you summation of the visit to the vet!!! It all seems "handleable" if you know what I mean! I know you will still worry, as we all would, but Mogs, I also know you are exhausted and you're no good to Saoirse in that state. Please at least get a small nap in, if you can't manage a real sleep. It doesn't help either you or Saoise for you to continue on in exhaustion, and you know I'm right. Okay, now that I've gone all dutch uncle on you, I just want to say how relieved I am (!) and to let you know that I' still sending prayers and healing vines, along with a load of love and strength.

Please take care of yourself as well as you do Saoirse! :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

So glad your kitty is at home and is stable. I've been praying for you both since I saw the thread. I wanted to say a few years ago, I had a very large corneal ulcer with bleeding and iritis from contaminated contact solution. There is pretty significant discomfort with the ulcer, but the iritis and pressure makes you REALLY dizzy. I had nausea from dizziness alone, but the eyedrops to keep the iris dilated helped. The inflammation lasted about a week, and the cloudy vision about 3 weeks. You may want to call and ask if they can also give you some bupre. for pain for a few days if you don't have any available and an anti-nausea if she is still gagging.

I had to be out and missed this afternoon--what a wonderful report Mogs!!
Please take care of yourself..... you need to get rest my friend. I know it is hard for many of us to think of ourselves before our babies but she needs you to be ok to care for her. As many hugs as you can handle from Chicago :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I think it is possible and in fact likely that the nausea is as a result of the pain arising from the internal inflammation. The cilary muscles spasm causing the iris to constrict, this can result, in adhesions end result of which is eye pressure up, lots of pain, I have had human patients present with this puking uncontrollably in my consulting room. We would also treat in humans with the tropicamide, it resolves the cilary spasm and pain and goodbye nausea.

So it's all making sense and your vet sounds to be very much on the ball. It's great that he will do a home visit, so much better for her.

Have the Ulcers healed themselves? are they treating with anything? antivirals, antibiotics, steroids?

Poor little kitten, so glad she is feeling better.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Oh, Mogs... I just found this thread and I apologize for not being more in touch. Please know that I'm there with you in spirit and that I've been sending tons of prayers upward, wishing it was possible to physically be there to help in some way. I'm so relieved to know that you've been to the vet and have returned home with your beautiful fur baby and some encouraging news. Keep those updates coming, please! Now I'm hoping and praying that you both will recover quickly from this exhausting and very frightening ordeal. I know that our loving God will be there watching over both of you, guiding you along, holding you up. Please take good care of yourself. Can't help but be very concerned about you. Hugs... and more hugs.

Whew, what a relief! This sounds like this event was an unfortunate incident that diabetics need to come to expect. But that doesn't make it any easier. Mogs, as to the ulceration: Do you clip Saoirse's claws? Most folk, if they do trim, only trim the front, but I'm wondering if a back claw didn't catch her eye while she might have been scratching at herself. I know this worries me with Dottie, a LOT, especially now that she shows a tendency to scratch her ears because the edges of them itch a bit. She attacks her ears and I watch her hind foot flail at the 'itch'. It's a wonder all felines don't put their eyes out with those meathooks fixed at the end of their paws.

I did find out the length of time before krill oil takes effect..it's about 30 days, at least for humans... and I swear by the stuff. Keep giving her what you are giving her for inflammation until the KO would take effect. It's a food additive so it's not as risky as some man-made medications. Do start her on a regimen of krill oil. If you can get MEGA RED krill oil, it comes in extra strength. 2 drops from a standard Mega Red capsule added to a day's food..no more than that, should help her with any inflammation.

Also will she tolerate a DROP of bacon fat per day. Only a drop or so of that, too..it has valuable lineolic acid that can help Saoirse. It is especially good for eye problems.

Kitties are so tiny. Sometimes I think the amounts of anything recommended are too high for a compromised kitty. Our measurements of teaspoons or whole pill sizes are too great for them. You gotta start slow and work your way up.

By now I assume you are at the end of your day. I hope you both get an excellent night's sleep. :bighug::bighug::bighug: Sweet Dreams!

Oh Mogs! I am so sorry I wasn't online last night to help you through that scary situation. Also elated to hear the vet says no immediate danger (Antijinx) and that Saoirse is home again in her loving Momma's tender care. You are the most devoted kitty Mom and Saoirse knows it. It's so hard to see our furkids unwell and terrifying when we don't know what is going on with them. Oh that they could tell us how they are feeling....it would be so much easier!
Hope you are finally able to get some rest!

YES!!!!! Great news she is home and the vet has some idea of what is going on. My civvie, Tobey, gets ulcers from feline herpes (rarely but it does happen when he's stressed) and we use a fantastic anti-viral drop called Idoxuridine. It gets it right under control. It's possible the drops your vet prescribed are ask liar anti-viral and that would be great.

Many hugs and caring thoughts still coming your and Saoirse's way.

    Hi everyone,

Got all your messages and they mean the world to us. Thank you all for your support, prayers and healing thoughts; they are helping more than you will ever know. Also all the medical information; it helps so much to hear about human experiences of similar problems. You're helping Saoirse to speak to me to tell me what's wrong and maybe find a better way to help her and I'm beyond grateful for such precious insights.

Saoirse is more settled after Amodip but I think the dose is too high; went to check her and she was a bit floppy - put the heart completely crossways in me. I roused her and monitored her closely and she seems a bit sedated but OK now. (She did have a sedative earlier so maybe that hadn't quite cleared her system?) Will call the vets in the morning to discuss dosing, since Saoirse is notoriously med-sensitive. Checked her BG - 15.5 but skipped insulin tonight (not comfortable with this but my gut told me it was the safest thing to do under the circumstances - praying it's the right decision). Saoirse is more relaxed now. I was able to soothe and comfort her. Think it probably does more for her mammy than herself. She has eaten for me despite not having her anti-nausea med today (there will be residual benefit from earlier doses) but after the gagging and the severe nausea last night it's a relief .

Managed to get some sleep but still very cold and absolutely shattered.

Update tomorrow. I can't thank you all enough for helping us through this. Blessings to you, your fur babies, and all your loved ones.

I'd like to be able to monitor heart rate and BP at home - especially if Saoirse needs to stay on meds. I'm sure our vet would teach me how if I asked. Can you suggest any good equipment for doing so, Larry?

Thank you for the feedback on Saoirse's labs. :bighug:

Wonderful to hear Saoirse is eating and accepting all the love and care you can shower on her. I'm sure she is enjoying it as much as you are! All this has been very stressful on both of you and maybe she is still recovering just as you are from the initial shock and scare. As good as these little critters can be at hiding when they don't feel well , I firmly believe that our furkids experience the "emotions" we do in situation like this....and it's going to take Saoirse some time to get her equilibrium back too! Cuddling will heal both of you! Sending healing vines and warm fuzzy thoughts to you both! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

You can purchase a stethoscope at any pharmacy or big box store that has a pharmacy. You'll need quiet in order to hear Saoirse's heartbeat. Count the number of beats in 15 seconds and multiply by four to get the heart rate in beats per minute (bpm). A normal cat's heart rate is between 140 and 220 bpm, with a relaxed cat measuring on the low end.

Watch Saoirse's respiration rate, too. A cat that is struggling with pain, or dizziness will breathe much shallower and faster than a cat who is perking along nicely. Use a timer and count...20 to 30 breaths per minute is normal. Anything much faster, or slower, is a cue that something's not right. Also remember that if your kitty has sleep apnea, she'll hesitate in her breathing a LOT while she's asleep. But usually it's only in obese cats that you'll notice sleep apnea, and Saoirse's weight is on the lean side, yes?

As for a doppler blood pressure monitor, they are very expensive. I located one online from the Thames medical Company, and it's ...I don't know where to find the proper "pounds" symbol on my kb..almost #900? The device uses doppler technology to get kitties' bp.

I just read about your terrifying ordeal with sweet Saoirse. I'm so relieved to hear that she is stable and back home with you. From this point forward, I want you to remember one thing...You will ALWAYS be strong enough to take on whatever comes your way with precious Saoirse...simply because of your intense love and devotion for that cat, which is so clearly evident. I will be keeping tabs on you both...looking forward to hearing how she's doing.

Another way to check pulse rate is to put two fingers behind her left front leg and press gently...you should be able to "feel" her heartbeat. Count for 15 seconds and multiply by 4

or you can press gently in this area and feel a pulse too

Update: Worry over Amlodipine Dose and Breathing
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another vigil tonight. Haven't been able to get sleep because of worry over Saoirse's reaction to the amlopidine. It has been 4.75 hours since dose administration. Her breathing was unusual - a bit shallow and somewhat more frequent than normal. After what could possibly be described as a kitty faint earlier, I've been monitoring her. She's a bit like I was on timed-release beta blockers; felt like my blood had turned to soup.

Between the fast last night and the restrictions on feeding after she was sedated for the eye exam she hadn't had much food in the last 29 hours. I just managed to get her to eat a bit more and I added extra water in the hope that better hydration would help. She did seem quite thirsty. She is responsive but somewhat sluggish.

    --------

    Stop Press:

Just checked her breathing after getting the bit of food and fluids into her. She is breathing more normally now. @Jeanne Skadowski - thank you very, very much for the info on respiration rates. I've done several timings on her and she's taking 21-22 breaths per minute. It's a relief to know her respiration rate is within normal limits; it's certainly not as high as it was earlier. Saoirse seems more comfortable since the food and fluids. She seems to be resting comfortably now. I love her so.

Not sure where your vet is measuring BP, but no, I don't think so....for lack of a better way to describe it, you're shooting for her "armpit"....where her front leg attaches to her body, near the chest.....I added a picture above too

Thank you. Can't find the pulse at the moment. Trying to balance care monitoring with the need to minimise stress.

Just made up some kitty soup for Saoirse and she took it for me. She is more alert now, thank goodness. I'm happier with her clinical signs.

Yay! I think it's probably normal for her to experience a bit of light-headedness on her new meds. And let's face it, when we feel crummy, lightheadedness kind of goes paw in paw with feeling lousy. I see that Amodip can cause a fluctuation in serum potassium level. That might be the reason for the lethargy too. Here is a link to the drug information in case you haven't had time to look it up, yet.

And HEY! She's eating! Best news EVER! :bighug:

    Don't forget to sleep tonight!

Really hope you managed to get some rest overnight despite what I know is your ongoing anxiety. You must be exhausted so please remember to take care of YOU as well, and tend to your emotional health as well as your physical health. I think we forget how easy it is to become run-down and that leads to an overall lowering in spirits.

I'm going through a rather a miserable time with dental issues and have felt wrung-out and down so I have to remind myself of what we say to FD newbies here - remember the importance of little treats! For us that might mean a new magazine, a relaxing bubble bath, some luxury chocolate, or just an hour watching our favourite tv show... these things look so trite in black and white and no, of course they're not going to change the situation, but they can offer that slight mind shift and give us a tad more energy to face another day...

    Lecture over

Hope today sees you both more settled.

Addendum to the above: Another way to spot high blood pressure in cats is when they have headaches. People who have cats that develop headaches report that their animals press their heads against walls or cushions to stop the pain. I have seen a couple of my cats do this, on occasion...and funny thing, that is exactly what I thought at the time, "They have a headache!".... because when my head hurts I try to press my own face into a pillow, or press a damp washcloth tight against my eyes.
