I will be praying for you and Saoirse. I am so glad you have an opthamolgist close and that she is concerned about keeping up the care for her other health needs while she is there.

Thank you all for being here, for your messages, and for your prayers and positive, healing thoughts for my girl. I wouldn't be holding together this much if I was alone.
    :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm so grateful that the vets and the nursing staff at the hospital are so good and so kind. There's a positivity and a warmth to the atmosphere in the hospital. It has 'a strong pulse'. The place Saoirse went for tests last year had a cold, sterile feel to it. Given that she needs to be in hospital I feel better about her being in one with 'a good heart' and not one of 'steely intellect'.

I managed to get some desperately needed sleep; I was stupid with exhaustion earlier. Still very, very tired. I tried to force some food down but didn't get very far with that; couldn't chew and swallowing was difficult.

I couldn't agree more. It's one of the things I like about the ER vet we use - we have a choice of 2, but we always pick the one where the staff are warmer with both owners and pets even though they're 5 minutes further away. They may not realize it, but it really does make a difference to how comfortable we are leaving any of the cats there when necessary. If you have time for another hour or two to sleep before you have to leave to be near Saoirse today, maybe you can just nap for a little while as I know it's still very early there. I may not be on too late tonight - there's a virus doing the rounds in our house so we've been trying to stay warm and watch movies and relax, but our thoughts and prayers will be with you for the coming day. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

If you can try to drink something, sometimes when you are so worried chewing and swallowing is just too much. It is so hard to have to leave them at the hospital, I will be worrying with you.

Nancy is right. Do you have something Across The Pond that equates with our "Instant Breakfast"? It's basically a milkshake with vitamins. That stuff is good to keep on hand, (It comes in powdered form over here, little envelopes), and it beats choking on food when you're stressed.:cat:

@manxcat419 - I'm sorry to hear about the virus. I hope you all feel better very soon. I'd like to try to get a bit more sleep - if it will come; my body certainly needs it. I hope that you will get a good night's rest. :bighug:

Thank you Mogs - it's nothing serious at all, fortunately...just one of those nasty head colds that always for me wipes out my sinuses and throat for a few days. It's more uncomfortable than being really ill. I hope you manage to get a little more sleep so that you're refreshed and recharged ready for when Saoirse comes home. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

Thank you so much, Nancy. It means so much to me not to be alone with this. :bighug: I really did want to get the food into me earlier so I can be strong for Saoirse but I just couldn't get it down. I've got a jug of water here and I'm drinking that. My mouth is like sawdust with the worry. I'm sitting here cuddling our tiger blanket.

If you can get hold of some Complan, Mogs, that might help as it's just a drink. My aunt used to swear by it if she was feeling too ill to eat. Most major supermarkets should have it, and a lot of pharmacies stock it too. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

That's a good idea, Jeanne. You're right in your suspicions about the state of my tummy. Worry and fear always go to my gut. The weight has been falling off me for the last few days and I think I now have a chest cold. We don't have Instant Breakfast but I am going to try to get some banana-flavoured milk. It's fortified with vitamins and it should be easier to get that down. Might try getting some fresh custard and bananas as well.

I managed to get the last available room in the hotel near the hospital. There is dinner and breakfast included. At times like this sometimes it helps if someone else puts a bit of food up to you. Maybe that might help me eat a bit. The girl that took my booking could not have been kinder or more helpful. She's saying a little prayer for Saoirse, too. I love my baby so much.

I've not been able to reply to all your messages, Jeanne, but I appreciate every single one of them - and all your advice and suggestions, too. Thank you for your warmth and your kindness. :bighug:

Oh my goodness... Lots of developments, hopefully all positive. I am in total awe of all you're doing and if there is any justice in this world you will see an upturn now.
I have zero specialist feline medical knowledge so I can only add my weight to the notion of the need to look after YOU... Totally support the idea of Complan or similar. I'm sure all chemists would stock it. We are what we eat and so you need all those vitamins and minerals to keep you functioning at optimum level.
    All paws firmly crossed...

Thank you so much, Diana. :bighug:

The flavoured milk, custard and bananas should be a help. They're the things I repeatedly fall back on when I get flare-ups of PTSD symptoms. My head is such a mess right now that I wouldn't have thought to get some without the suggestions here.

    Update: Wednesday Morning
    -----------------------------------

Just got a call from one of the vets at the hospital. He sounded quite positive on the phone. Saoirse has had a good night ( :) ) and she is much more comfortable now that she is getting her general pain relief and also they gave her something to ease the pain and swelling in her eye.

You cannot imagine just how relieved I am that Saoirse is getting pain relief. It was tearing me up inside the last few days when I could not get any help from the local vets about whether it was safe to give her the bupe. I had something just sitting there that could have helped Saoirse and the lack of safety information left my hands completely tied and afraid to use it for fear it might harm her ... I would not wish that predicament on anyone. :(

Now that Saoirse is more comfortable her blood sugar levels have improved and she has a nadir in the normal range. She was OK overnight. She is eating well. They will continue to monitor her during the day. I've told them that I will drop more food in later for Saoirse. I've also asked them to continue with the Cerenia for nausea management. I don't want her stressed out by someone trying to pill her with ondansetron.

I wish, wish, wish I could visit Saoirse during the day but, as agonising as it is for me not to be there to comfort her while she is poorly nor to see her before she goes in for her operation, I am firmly of the opinion that it is the best thing for Saoirse to have as calm and steady a day as possible. I want my girl to be as stable as possible ready for the opthalmologist to help her this evening. It means so much to me that she is with such conscientious and caring people who really know what they are doing.

    STOP PRESS:

I just got a call from the opthalmologist. She advises that the eye meds Saoirse received last night have reduced the swelling a bit so I hope that helps my baby a bit while she's waiting for her operation. She also said that Saoirse is doing OK. I thanked her and told her how much it means to me to know Saoirse is in such good hands. She doesn't know what time she will be doing the op; it may be as late as 7pm tonight. She will call me afterwards. She said that Saoirse may need to stay in the hospital an extra night depending on the time of the op. I've told the specialist that I want Saoirse to stay under their nursing care for as long as she needs to (especially with her being diabetic). I am beyond grateful to be in the position to be able to afford the best care for my girl. If all this had happened a few years ago things would have been very, very different. <shudder>

Thank you everyone for being there for us. I would be grateful if you could continue to pray and send positive thoughts to Saoirse. I love her so much. I am so lucky to be her Person.

    Mogs

EDITED TO ADD: I am very pleased with the way that the vets are working with me on Saoirse's insulin needs. They are showing respect for my experience in this regard and also my knowledge of Saoirse's insulin response and I very much appreciate it.

Oh yes, we CAN imagine how relieved you are that the pain meds are safe and are working, Mogs... We would all be the same, there is just nothing worse than seeing our babies in distress and us feeling powerless to do anything about it. It really sounds as if you/she have turned a corner! Try and stay calm during this waiting time and send positive loving healing thoughts to your baby...

    Hi Diana,

I'm glad you're here, too. :bighug:

It was awful not being able to get the right help for my baby. If it weren't for the nightmare with the BP med I'd have known it was OK to give her the bupe. This has been a nightmare for both of us to go through. I am really angry that my girl had to go through that. I am angry that I could not get real help for her. As tough and uncertain as the current situation is, I was incredibly relieved leaving the hospital last night. I love my girl.

Saoirse is so fortunate to have such a loving Mom and such great support people all on her side. Checking in on you and Saoirse was the first thing I did this morning and I am so glad she was able to have a better night and is getting such top notch care. My heart goes out to you for having to deal with this whole nightmare, but you and Saoirse have got all the right people working for her.

Continuing to send a steady stream of prayers and healing vines for you and Saoirse . :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

Hi Mogs. Marje asked me to check in on you. I'm headed for bed but wanted to introduce myself first. My kitty, Cinco, was diagnosed with glaucoma two years ago. He also had the Bartonella virus and lost sight in both eyes. One eye had a tumor on it, so it was removed. We continued to treat the remaining eye for the glaucoma, but it was so uncomfortable and stressful for Cinco, and we just couldn't get the pressure down, so I made the decision to remove that eye, too. What a difference it made! His BGs came down and he was a much happier cat.

If I can be of any help to you as you go through your kitty's recovery, don't hesitate to ask. It sounds like you have a fabulous team on your side already.

BTW, my other kitty, Harvey, was just diagnosed today with glaucoma in both eyes. We are hoping to save his vision.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Mogs, I'm super happy you have found a great vet that listens to you. While I haven't had to work with this with a vet, I have had to find that experience myself and found myself firing a doctor because they would not listen to me and outright lied to me. Hugs.

    @Tricia & Cinco & Harvey -

Thank you so much for your offer of help and for telling me about Cinco. :bighug: I'm sorry to hear Harvey has just been diagnosed. I am saying a little prayer that his treatment will be successful and you will be able to save his sight.

I will write more later. I'm a bit flappy at the moment - trying to get ready to go to the hospital. I will be staying in a hotel nearby so I will be close to Saoirse. I'll have my Wifi tablet with me.

Again, thank you from the heart.

Gosh, a lot has happened here in a short time...

Mogs, I'm so pleased that you had a good consult with the specialist, and that there is now a clear plan in place to help Saoirse.
Keeping fingers and paws (and everything else that is potentially 'crossable') crossed today for the best possible outcome.

Everyone on the forum is rooting for you both!

    Hugs and prayers,

I'm so, so happy to hear that Saoirse is through the surgery and recovering well. You must be so relieved that she's awake and the vets are happy with her progress. :D And even better that you get to go and visit her - I know how much she means to you and how difficult it must be to be apart from her even when it's necessary. Continued prayers and vines for a speedy recovery for Saoirse. And hugs for you - hopefully once you've seen her you'll be able to get some rest. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

YAY!!!! I know how stressful it is when they're in surgery and all you can do is wait for news. I'm so glad the doctors are pleased so far. Deep breaths now and just take this one step at a time. A huge hurdle has been crossed.

Sending vines and prayers and :bighug:s.

Oh Mogs, am just now reading all that has transpired since Monday. When you said there were dark spots on her eye that could be cancer my mind immediately went to Bubba and his eye issue. I am wondering if she didn't have the same thing as Bubba. I am sure they will biopsy the eye and I will be interested to know if it was the same thing. I can tell you this: the surgery was harder on me knowing that I had to eventually do it before the glaucoma would set it. In your case, you are so thankful to have her out of pain!

My heart is right there with you and now this forum has two little pirates! Hugs and more hugs!!!! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Update: Thursday Morning - Not Out of Woods Yet
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you everyone for your messages and continued prayers and healing thoughts. Sorry I was in no fit state to post an update last night, and even sorrier that I'm not able to reply to you individually. Please know that I appreciate each and every one of you.
    :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Went to visit Saoirse yesterday evening. Was emotionally prepared for her eye to be closed but not for her beautiful little face to be shaven. With Saoirse's alopecia problems, the fur may not grow back properly. I know it's only cosmetic but it adds to how sad for Saoirse I already feel. I never wanted anything like this to ever happen to my beloved baby girl. :(

Saoirse is not out of the woods yet. When I saw her the anaesthetic was still wearing off and she was very cranky. They would normally give a dose of Metacam to cats to help with post-surgery pain but Saoirse is being given bupe. This is having a knock-on effect on her appetite (a normal bupe reaction for Saoirse) and they're having difficulty getting her to eat. I tried while I was there but I think she was nauseated; she did gag a little once when I managed to get her to lick a tiny bit of the juice from the food off my finger. She was groggy and I think it was too soon after the anaesthetic. They only have mirt for appetite stimulation so the specialist has given me a written Rx to get some cyproheptadine for her. Just got the morning update from the hospital. Saoirse's still a bit grouchy and has only nibbled at her grub overnight. I'm going to drop over some of Saoirse's crumbled freeze-dried chicken treats for them to use to coax her then I need to find a pharmacy that can fill the prescription for me.

I feel caught between a rock and a hard place: Saoirse might eat better if I brought her home but then I would not be as well-placed for medical support for her. It's at times like this I really miss being able to drive.

And mama bean is really ill now. I've got a really bad chest infection and, now that Saoirse has made it through the procedure safely all the stress of the last number of days is really hitting home and it has knocked me for six. I feel like someone has dropped a small mountain on top of me. I don't need this to be happening. I need to be able to look after my girl.

Please keep praying and sending healing thoughts to us. We have a way to go yet. Some appetite stimulation vibes would be great, too.

Sorry to hear you sounding slightly low, Mogs, but try to tell yourself that all this is to be expected. Any surgery is invasive and Saoirse is bound to look and feel less like herself for a while. It is very early days. I expect your elation that the op went so well didn't really prepare you for these realities but after all, things could be an awful lot worse so the glass is most definitely more than half full...? I know it's hard to think like that and carry on thinking like that when we've been through such enormous stress and worry, but if you were feeling stronger yourself you'd be better able to take this immediate post-op stage on board.

It sounds to me as if you need to rest, rest, rest and recharge batteries. Are you able to practise some form of meditation or other soothing relaxation technique? At the very least, sit comfortably and quietly and visualise all the stress leaving your body... and visualise Saiorse out of hospital in a happy healthy state and back at home with you where she belongs.

Remember - these are early days. The worst may be behind you but you now have a different set of challenges, perhaps, those of adapting to new realities and taking very positive steps to remain strong.

    Hugs!
    Diana

    @Diana&Tom -

Thank you for such a thoughtful message. I was so glad to read it because I'm in that 'lost and scared' place and it helps so much to hear a friendly voice. :bighug:

It's not so much worry about adapting to Saoirse's new visual status, etc., that's upsetting me. The thing that is getting to me most is that, naturally, I want Saoirse to feel better. I hate seeing anything wrong with her. :( The other worry I have is about not having proper medical support nearby. I never, never, never want anything like last weekend to happen to Saoirse ever again. It was truly awful not being able to get her the help she needed. If I lived down the road from the hospital I would try taking Saoirse home for a while to see if she might start eating for me but because I won't have access to transport 24/7 at home (limited taxi service) I might not be able to get her back to the hospital again and that thought scares the living daylights out of me.

If I could get Saoirse eating that would help a lot. If we could get that block in place they could keep her in the hospital over the weekend to make sure she's really stable. I do not want ketones anywhere near this picture under any circumstances.

Good morning Mogs~ If my memory serves me well, Bubba hardly missed a beat with eating. He is such a chow hound that I would know that he was critical if he stopped eating. He was sent home with bup, a huge dose, like .59ml ( he is a big cat) and even with all that narcotic on board, he still ate. What did they give you for pain relief. But, don't be surprised if your little girl is off her feed for a day or so. How is she doing otherwise? I think it is so much worse on us.

Even through all the post surgery, Bub's numbers did not rise (until he got stuck under the bed with the cone of shame and thrahed about to get unstuck and cause some bleeding from the surgery site)

Here is a little humor for you that @Squalliesmom sent to me after the surgery.

So glad they aren't not giving Metcam, it has been deemed NOT a good medicine for cats, causing kidney failure. Bupe is a much better choice. Make sure they give her enough for her size.

    Dear Mogs

Your strength in dealing with all the nightmares lately is amazing and admirable, but it is affecting your health.

Both you and Saoirse have been through such major trials the last number of days. But Saoirse has had the best treatments possible for her conditions and needs some time to recover, as do you. I feel so much for you being away for Saoirse and wanting her to feel better right away, I can't imagine how I would deal with this situation if it were me. It sounds like the best thing right now is the let Saoirse continue the recovery at the hospital and for you to take some self-care time and get your strength back up. The hospital staff sound like they will go to any length to get Saoirse recovering and keep her comfortable and I know you will push them to the ends of the earth to do so.

In a worse case scenario if Saoirse does not start eating better they can do a nasal feeding tube for a while. Although you don't want Saoirse to experience any more upset, she is still in the best place right now with medical assistance available around the clock. Saoirse will forgive you for her unplanned absence from home...it is hard to see a loved one uncomfortable, but this is all part of the recovery process and it takes time.

Mogs your love and passion for Saoirse and her health are almost beyond belief, but she has the best of care and this is the time for you to get your strength back and get your health back on course.

Continued prayers and healing vines for you and Saoirse

On the upside, I managed to get a new laptop so I'm better able to use the intertube now. Been trying to find a pharmacy in the area with a stock of cyproheptadine but no joy. I have some at home so I'm trying to sort out getting them up here. Need to do that ASAP so will be back in a bit ...

Good morning Mogs! Sorry I wasn't around yesterday...spent the day at the vet myself (one of my little ones is still sick...and TRUST ME when I say I get the no appetite and anxiety thing).

I know that Saoirse not eating is terrifying. But do remember that at the vet, they will be able to monitor for any adverse reactions. Hopefully the freeze dried chicken will help! I do hope Saoirse can come home soon!

Sending tons of appetite vines your way! Also, tons and tons of hugs.

Good suggestion, Lisa, and one I had thought of but cypro is not a commonly-used med over here. I'm the first person to ever request it from our own vets and it was new to the opthalmologist as well. Thankfully, I've managed to get hold of my friend who's minding my civvie for me and he has been to the house to pick up the supply of cypro I hold at home and also Saoirse's new blood ketone meter and test strips. My cabbie is picking them up from him and will drop them in to me at the hotel. As many of you know I always recommend that caregivers whose cats have appetite issues should always keep a stock of key management meds at home. This is a prime example of the importance of having squirrel stock.

I know the truth of this, Bobbie, especially when you have a kitty with pancreatitis issues. I know all the tricks that might help but it took me months and months to learn how best to help Saoirse to get her grub down. For example if I was able to sit and watch over her at the hospital I might be able to wait for her to have a snooze then try the sleepy eating trick: hospital staff can't devote that amount of time to her plus they have other patients to look after in a relatively limited space (and I fully understand and accept this). So that no avenue would be left unexplored I actually asked the hotel reception staff if they might give me permission to bring her over from the hospital for an hour or so (complete with litter box facilities) to see whether I might be able to kick start her appetite and then return her to the recovery ward but they declined on the grounds that the company has a strict no-animals policy. :(

If I had a guarantee of getting back to the hospital in an emergency I would bring her home but after what happened over the weekend the prospect of putting Saoirse at risk of not being able to get help again frankly terrifies me to the point where just thinking about it makes me feel physically sick. I need to protect my girl.

Morning Mogs, I know it's hard when our babes aren't feeling well. General anesthesia is very heavy on the stomach and it's understandable if Saoirse doesn't feel like eating. I was always told give it 24 hrs to clear the body.

She is going to need you when she is discharged. She is in the best place for recovery. Since you are starting to get sick yourself, I suggest you go back to your room and get some rest. They will call you, you are close by. You need to be well for her.

Another suggestion is if you can find it at a pharmacy or vet not in your area is to ask them to send it for overnight delivery to the clinic where Saoirse is at. Ask them to send it for A.M. delivery.

Hospital is being brilliant. They normally don't allow visitors before 5pm but they're going to make a concession and allow me in to help nurse Saoirse this afternoon. The vet is also happy to work with me on drop-dosing of Saoirse's Lantus. They are taking on board my concerns about preventing DKA as well.

If anyone's online with ketone prevention / DKA experience, if there's anything you can suggest which might be helpful to ask the hospital vets to give me to bring home for Saoirse I would very much appreciate hearing from you.

Pancreatitis I can do. I am a bit out of my depth with recovery after a procedure like this one. @Tricia & Cinco & Harvey, @Bobbie And Bubba - is there any advice you can give me on what to expect, please?

Thank you all so very, very much for all your prayers, healing thoughts, caring and support. You are all helping me to keep going. If I can sort things out then I plan to get a bit more rest. I did manage to eat a little bit last night and this morning. I know I need the oxygen mask.

They can keep Saoirse as long as necessary. (I can pay for the extended stay myself even if the insurance won't cover it.) Part of the reason I want her to stay a little longer is to have nursing support for Saoirse in the hope that I might be able to get a bit of rest in order to better look after Saoirse at home.

Mogs, Bubba's ketone occurred some time after the surgery which I understand now a surgery can bring them on. Good thing you got a ketone meter. ( I believe I read that in one of your threads) I did not have one until much later so I was very remiss testing his urine with the strips. Bubba threw moderate ketones while he was in the 200's and he was eating. But looking back now here were some signs that I missed. He started peeing oceans again and the urine looked sticky. Also he was losing weight despite eating.

Test frequently and keep in mind that with the meter the numbers are geared for humans. Ketones show up with cats on the meter at 2.4. I had to use the Novolin R insulin in adjunct to the lantus to pull his numbers down and get rid of the ketones. Hopefully it won't be an issue for you but I think it's good that you are thinking ahead but try to rest yourself so that you can get better. You and Saiorse were constantly on my mind last night in my fitful sleep. You must know how much you are loved in this forum as your threads almost blew up the board!
