Young again no carb food

Does anyone use this? Has anyone ever only had to give this and no injections?

 

It's not actually zero carb but more like 5% - I thought they had taken the zero carb claim off it? That is okay carb wise for a diabetic but it's still dry food so a cat being fed just this is still not going to be getting properly hydrated. Low carb wet food is better.

Some cats do become diet controlled but it's pretty rare that they don't require some insulin support to get there. I'm assuming you have a recent diagnosis and haven't started insulin as yet. If that is the case I highly recommend you start home testing and try the diet change for a week or so to see what happens. Chances are you will then need to start insulin but you'll have the advantage of having the home testing under control already. Changing to a low carb diet when already on insulin can be a little hair raising because insulin needs can drop dramatically so if you've already started insulin you don't want to do it until you can home test.

I know it's all very overwhelming and scary to start off with but this is not something you want to dilly dally around with too long. The longer a cat stays in high numbers the more damage is being done and the less chance you have of remission.

You will have a lot of support here - make use of it and ask all the questions you need to.

 

He has already been diagnosed. Even with insulin prozinc 3 units two times day it was 415 an hour ago

 

He gets a shot at 8 am and 8 p

 

The test at the nadir, the lowest level between shots, is what counts, not the pre-shot levels. That should remain above 50 mg/dL on a human glucometer and above 68 mg/dL on a pet meter, at a minimum.

I see you spoke to one of the sales people at YA-they are very passionate and it is not a bad product but they make claims that have the potential to put a kitty at risk. They told me I did not need to test other than pre shot--NOT TRUE- I have caught several times when Dre was on the edge of a hypo-
As I said the product is acceptable but they should be more careful with their claims especially since they have no idea of your cats history or why your cat got FD-
We are on tight regulation so Dre eats only low carb wet but my other cat eats some YA -

Gizmo is now eating some YA, although we're working our way steadily towards completely 'wet' food. He lets me know of his displeasure over losing his junk food, about midway through my sleep period. He does this by leaping from the back of my recliner, onto my stomach. I bet my tongue shoots out of my mouth like I'm a carnival toy. My radar is beginning to kick in, though..so I can deflect him before he plays trampoline on my gut.

Dottie only mouths her YA just to get a bit of flavor...without her teeth, those teeny little round nuggets of YA recommended for toothless kitties just roll out of her mouth, going kerplunk on the floor in front of her. She thinks she's getting something, but she's not...not really.

Good news is, she actually likes our 4x a day ritual of Eating Pureed Food, so she's not starving. Sits on my lap, gets a going-over with a brush, first, and then eagerly laps her catsoup from my finger...After her meal, she holds up her dear little face for me to wipe with a wet cloth. Gizmo gets his face washed too, although he doesn't need it.... he gets jealous if I don't blot his wiskers, too. Rotten spoiled, both of them.
