    Hi Jayla,

I am praying that you're right. Saoirse has been put on IV fluids and IV pain relief. I hope to God it will do something to calm the inflammation. My heart shrivels at even the thought of her being in pain. (((Saoirse)))

    I know you would Mogs....
The fluids will help and especially the Iv pain relief. Sounds like she is in good hands.
Rest up as she will be home soon !!!:bighug:

    Good grief.

I would be careful about shooting Lantus every eight hours even if you are only shooting a small amount. It's not a technique we use here and without some documentation and basis for doing that, I would be cautious.

Try to get some rest. I'm hoping a better vet will come in and make sure she gets what she needs.

    Many vines and prayers.

Oh Mogs, I am so sorry Soairse and you are going through such a tough, painful time of it! I wish I had some wonderful words of wisdom for you, that could help make everything right again. I know what it cost you to get Soairse to the vet without support - you are truly her hero.

I have so little experience of pancreatitis, I really can't contribute any advice. I do know, though, that every time Squallie has been given sub-q fluids he has felt much better, no matter what was griping him.

You probably already know this but since I saw no mention of it I'll throw it out there just in case. Because SEB does such a great job of coating the lining of the stomach it should not be given within at least two hours of any medications, as it will affect absorption.

Sending you and Soairse prayers, love and healing vines. Wish I was there to help you, but since I can't be I'll have to suffice with sending you (((hugs))). :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Take good care - I know you won't have slept - but you must look after your own health as well.

I did get a couple of hours of sleep - absolutely exhausted - but my dreaming was very troubled.

I'm sitting here waiting for the vet's morning update. I'm so anxious and scared that I'm shaking, my stomach is in ribbons and I feel like I'm on the verge of throwing up. (Got a bowl beside me just in case, the feeling's that bad.)

Thank you all for being there. If if weren't for you, I'd be all alone with this.

Just got a call from the vet. News is mixed.

Saoirse is brighter this morning and she has eaten some food but her abdomen is still very tender in spite of the pain meds. Her abdomen is quite bloated. They don't know why. One possible cause might be bacterial problems in the gut so they have added metronidazole to her IV.

I'm allowed to visit Saoirse at lunchtime and I'm going to bring in some of her low carb food. She's not happy about being in the hospital (growling at the staff again).

My heart is very heavy ... can't bear the thought of Saoirse being in pain. Thinking very hard about things. My baby ...

I love you with all my heart, Saoirse. You're my world.

Breathe, Mogs... The vet seems to have things under control and if Saoirse is growling at the staff I'd take that as a good sign... If she was too poorly to care she wouldn't do that.

Glad you are allowed to visit and if only I was nearer I would come and pick you up... Do you have someone to go with you for a little moral support?

Keep thinking positive thoughts, Mogs, and visualising little Saoirse back home with you soon feeling much better...

    Thinking of you

    Hugs

I can't bear the thought of her being in pain. I don't know how long to give the antibiotics a chance to work. All I know is that I can't have her like this for very long; I love her with all my heart.

My brother's a doctor and a memory came back to me about something he said when my dad was sick. He told me it takes about three days for antibiotic treatment to start showing benefits and my brother was spot-on with this assessment. Trouble is I don't know if I could bear Saoirse to be like this for three days. I desperately want to do the right thing for her needs and at the same time I'm petrified of making a mistake. Saoirse is the heart and soul of me and this is tearing me apart. I wish I could be with her. I hate her being poorly and not having me there beside her to comfort and reassure her. If she was human I'd be able to stay by her bedside.

Yes, I suppose it would make sense that antibiotics take a while to work, or at least they have a cumulative effect so they do need time to make a real difference. I hear what you're saying of course about not wanting her to be in pain and I'm sure she would feel more reassured if you were there at the vets with her. I think in your shoes I would simply plead with the vet to let me stay for at least part of the day, or make several visits, or whatever could be worked out... Surely in Saoirse's interests they would let you do that? Try to spend this waiting time this morning phrasing your request in such a way that the vet can't refuse...

There's no way they'll let me stay with her, Diana. It's not the first time I've asked if I could assist with nursing her while she was in with them (especially because she finds it so stressful). It's a complete brick wall. There is only limited cover at the practice over the weekend so no chance of multiple visits either. :(

I would probably stand there at the vets and break down in tears and make a spectacle of myself until they agreed to let me stay for half an hour or whatever... Then just sit quietly with my kitty and soothe her, so the vet could see it was ok to stay... Well it might be worth a try, anything is...?

Just getting up and catching up on how Saoirse is doing.

It sounds like they are doing all the right things for your girl. As has already been said it can take a few days before the antibiotics take effect. I know how hard it is for you to have Saoirse feeling poorly and away from home, but she is getting all the right support measures. The hardest part is when your baby is feeling poorly and wanting her to feel better right away, but she is in the best place right now for support treatment. The report you got says Saoirse is feeling brighter and eating some which is a positive sign. And as Diana said if she is feeling well enough to be cranky, that too is a positive sign.

If there is a bacterial infection or even a GI upset it can take a few days for the system to settle down. We all know how miserable and cranky we get when we have a stomach flu and sometimes it is a matter of time to let the system get back to normal. All the right things are being done so now it is a matter of waiting. Saoirse has proven herself to be a fighter as have you. As hard as it sounds, you need to take some time to rest and keep yourself healthy. Saoirse will need her momma strong and healthy when she comes home.

Sending boatloads of prayers and ((HUGS)) and healing energy for both Saoirse and you.

One other thought... Is there any value in considering some kind of natural relaxation therapy for Saoirse... Bach's rescue remedy or similar...? To help her stay calm while we're waiting for the treatment to kick in and for her to feel better...?

Along with natural relaxation, if you haven't already done so, take something with your scent for Saoirse to have with her while she is at the vets.

Thank you for your post, Mary Ann, and for being there for us. :bighug:

The hardest thing I'm struggling with is that Saoirse is in pain. If the pain meds were helping her discomfort this would be a little less difficult. It is tearing me apart that she's hurting right now. I don't want her to be in pain. I love her so much.

There is absolutely NO doubt in anyone's mind as to how much you love your beloved Saoirse and how much you are willing to do for her. :bighug: :bighug:

GI upsets. whether from a viral or bacterial cause, or an attack of acute pancreatitis, take some time to work themselves through. The diarrhoea that she had for a couple of days, before the stomach bloating showed could have been caused by the food or from an infection in the GI tract, or the start of a pancreatic episode. At this point all the right things are being done to help with the pain and the symptoms. Although it seems like forever, the current status of the bloating and lack of appetite is less than 24 hours, and Saoirse has shown some positive improvements, so with a bit more time, hopefully she will continue to improve.

You need to be positive Mogs or you will drive yourself crazy. I too panic when one of my kitties is sick. I too am a bundle of nerves and tears, but that is because we love our kitties so much and cannot bear to see them in pain or sick. But all we can do is all the right things, which are being done for Saoirse and keep on praying. When my Maxie was sick, lethargic and not eating and with no idea what was happening (B/W, x-rays all done) we tried several antibiotics and even a run of steroids to help with any inflammation and I syringe fed, finger fed, and coaxed her to eat for many days. I was beside myself thinking that this would be the end, but I just continued and she finally improved. Trust me, I know your pain, but sometimes it just takes some time to turn around. When Maxie was so sick, she didn't have the strength to be cranky, so at least Saoirse is showing that she still has some of her usual spunk there!

When we are so utterly emotionally involved it's hard to separate those emotions from reality... I know I would feel exactly the same as you Mogs right now, whilst others with the benefit of distance would be able to be calmer... Any kind of treatment takes TIME and that's what you have to keep reminding yourself I think...

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

    Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message She Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

She was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
    My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;

I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

    The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
    Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Mogs, over the next few days there will be an outpouring of grief and tears for you and with you, and poems and pictures... You will be in a daze with it all, it's almost too much for one person to cope with. PLEASE come here and share every single thought with us, every emotion... Please don't be alone with this.

You will always always love Saoirse, for ever and ever, as she will you. When my Tom and Sophie left me I didn't stop saying "I loved him/her so much...", I carried on saying it in the present tense, and still do. Your love for Saoirse is timeless. It helps.

Oh, Mogs..... Sighs and hugs and tears.....

No, you won't believe it for a while. Nor will we. It will be a gradual realisation. Your mind and stomach will be churning and nothing seems real. Shock and disbelief are the immediate stages of grief... It is a very complex path and you must take each minute as it comes... Seek help if you need to. I used to post very regularly on Grief here. Some people do, some don't. It's a very personal thing.

I mentioned just now about poems and things which other members will no doubt send you. I have a couple of favourites which I found comforting - and believe me I needed comforting - and which may help you too in the days and weeks to come... May be a little early right now but if you feel up to it, Google "Death is nothing at all" which might help a tiny teeny bit.

This morning my father came to mind. He developed peritonitis. Even going in to the vets today I did wonder whether Saoirse might have it. Unprompted, the vet told me she thought Saoirse may have developed peritonitis.

I couldn't bring her home for a little while so she'd feel a bit safer and I could soothe her. I couldn't even hold her in my arms ...

I can't believe it either. You were taking such good care of her. I didn't post about this earlier, but I sat down with my cats Link and Peanut and told them about Saoirse. We were all thinking about you and Saoirse and hoping for the best. I'm so sad for your loss.

What can I do to help you?

I am so sorry. My heartfelt sympathy is with you.

The time has come for me,
    to make my final journey.
It’s hard to leave your arms,
and I know how you will worry.

I don’t make this passage alone,
your love will light my way.
Open paws will reach out for mine,
and loving hearts are with us today.

My life with you has been beautiful,
This is not our final good-bye.
It’s just a “see ya later”,
for it is now my time to fly.

Gentle journey to your tenth life, beloved Saoirse.

I am so sorry for your loss. I still miss Squeaker. Just know that your dedication is what brought her this far and despite your pain, the suffering is now over. Never again will Saoirse feel pain or experience the fear of going/being at the hospital. I will light my candle tonight in her memory.

I did exactly the same thing with my two. I held them and cried and told them their friend from afar had crossed the bridge. Saoirse was indeed a kitty that will always be loved by all of us here. :bighug: :bighug:

Oh Mogs, I'm so, so very sorry. Saoirse knows how much you love her, she is no longer in pain. Rest in Peace sweet Saoirse:rb_icon:

Don't grieve too long for now I'm free
I've followed the path God set for me
I ran to Him when I heard His call
I swished my tail and left it all.

I could not stay another day
To meow, to love, to romp or play
Games left unplayed must stay that way
I found such peace; it made my day.

My parting has left you with a void
Please feel it with remembered joy
A friendship shared, your laugh, a kiss
Oh yes, these things I too shall miss

Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
My life's been full, you've given so much
Your time, your love and gentle touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your head and share with me
God wanted me; He set me free!

I know from experience that it does. I lost Saoirse's brother 13 years ago. In all that time he has been in my thoughts every day; every kiss or fuss or treat for Saoirse accompanied by the same for Amadán. I love Amadán and I love Saoirse. I love them as much today as I did when I first became their Person. I always will. Real love is always present tense.

i know, Mogs, I know...it will wash over you like a great tidal wave, what I used to call a tsunami of grief. It will seem impossible... And then the survivor in you realises what has happened and you start to see it as real. It takes time.
But Mogs, she is still with you and always will be. She is part of you and you are part of her. As I say in my sig, quoting Emily Dickinson: "unable are the loved to die, for love is immortality".

You WILL get through this, Mogs. Saoirse will help you because she is still part of you...

I am in utter disbelief, as I know you are. I am so very, profoundly sorry. If she did have peritonitis, her chances of surviving would have been miniscule even with the best care. I know this because it is what happened to my baby girl.

Please know that I do fully understand exactly how it feels to have your heart and soul ripped away from you. I wish I could offer you some words of comfort but in the loss of such a beloved one, there is nothing that comforts....or, at least, I found this to be true for me. Just know that we are all family here and always will be so don't hesitate to lean on us during the days and months ahead.

Still, I leave you a lovely, lovely verse of hope so one day you can go back and read through all these and feel the hope because that does exist and what I hold onto every single day......the hope that we will see our sweet babies and hold them once again.

    The Ridge
    © 2004 By Carol Notermann

It’s been such a lovely summer, I’ve been napping in the sun.
This morning, other cats and I enjoyed a long long run.
We chased butterflies together. I climbed high into a tree.
And now I think what woke me up was that small bumble bee.

I’ve yawned and stretched, and still I feel that something has begun.
He’s standing there in robes of white, and telling me to come.
I always run to Him you know, when He comes across the bridge
To see if we’re all having fun and if we’ve checked the ridge.

He gives tummy rubs to all of us and pets and cuddles too
I’m glad to see Him every day, when He comes into view.
Each day He takes a different cat, and chats with them a while
Then off that kitty starts to run. I swear they seem to smile.

But now He’s stopped in front of me. He’s said a name I know.
He said to look out towards the ridge. The sun is setting low.
I start to walk out toward the ridge, and then what’s that I see.
IT’S YOU! IT’S YOU! It’s really you. You’ve come to be with me!

My goodness you are running and I am running too!
You stop to bend, but I can jump and now I am with you.
I feel your kisses on my head, as I did in long off days
You’re holding me and hugging me, and into your eyes I gaze.

And now He’s walking with us, as you carry me once more
We’ve crossed the bridge together. We’re here at Heaven’s door.
And He has held it open, and told us to walk through
That from now on and forever, I can always be with you.

Oh dearest Mogs - they are still a part of you. "A love like ours can never die" (a line from the Beatles-And I love her") - it is so true with you and Saoirse. I am devastated to hear this news - the whole world here is mourning sweet Saoirse and we are mourning with you. Just try to get through one hour at a time, then one day at a time. I am so so so sorry - please note that we are all sharing your intense grief and praying for you and heaven's newest angel. Sending so much love

Like Marje, I have stood in your shoes. The grief is overwhelming. With time, it lessens. It never goes away -- nor should it. You love Saorise and the paw prints she left on your heart are a reminder of your bond.

Shortly after Gabby crossed, I came across this quote. I hope it offers you some solace. "Cats never completely leave you. They side step time, shrug off death - come at the call of memory their beauty undiminished, their touch as gentle, their love perpetual."

Fly free Saoirse and land softly. Many of our kitties are at the Bridge to greet you and keep you safe util you are reunited with the one you love best.

I really can't believe it. She was doing so well. She was eating like a champion & needed fewer meds (huge for a pancreatitis kitty), her BG was back into the normal range, her coat condition was really good, and her blood pressure had returned to normal. I keep seeing her just a few short days ago out in the kitchen with me, nuzzling up to me or asking for her grub, happy out; a cat with lots of living left to do.

I can't believe I've lost her to a bad batch of food. I'm numb now but when the realisation hits home it's going to destroy me.
