I don't know if my vet checked his ketone and I don't have a meter yet.. but Oliver found out today he is diabetic and has his mommy and daddy really worried tonight. I gave him his insulin 3 units of novbolin (what the vet told me to give him) and nothing has changed except he seems worse. He won't eat and won't drink. We have been give him electrolytes and he threw it up. I don't know what else to do I have done nothing but cry tonight.

    P.s.
I am feeding him friskies pate.

Reason for edit: Added the GA prefix to honor Oliver as he has "gone ahead".

What is he doing that makes you say he seems worse?

Do you have any idea what his blood glucose was at the vet's? Three units is a lot of insulin. Did he eat at all before he got his shot?

Hi Brittany. 3 units of Novolin is very large dose for a newly diagnosed cat. Did Oliver eat before he got the insulin? How long ago (how many hours ago) did he get the insulin? Did the vet check him for ketones today?

ETA I just saw your other post and you mention Oliver has been throwing up for a few days and is now hiding. This definitely sounds like it could be ketones and possibly DKA which is a medical emergency. If Oliver has no food in his system the 3u of Novolin is also very dangerous and he may need a glucose drip to bring his blood sugar back up.

My suggestion is that you take Oliver to the nearest vet clinic (emergency clinic) available to you ASAP. Both of these possibilities if not treated could be fatal.

He hasn't ate hardly anything in the last 3 days. The vet took it and it was 235.

You mentioned in your introductory thread that Oliver was dehydrated. Do the "tent test." Pick up a fold on skin on the scruff of the neck. Let go. If it snaps back down fairly quickly, your cat is not dehydrated. If the fold of skin stays tented, then your cat is dehydrated.

I take it this is definitely not normal behavior for him. I am concerned that he may be having a hypoglycemic episode. When did the vomiting start?

I don't know if the vet checked his ketone and no he didn't eat before his insulin he hasn't had much to eat in the last 3 days and I gave him his insulin 5 hours ago.

Brittany, rub some corn syrup (karo syrup) or maple syrup on Oliver's gums if he won't lick some off your finger and take him to the nearest emergency clinic ASAP because what you are saying sounds like it's likely his BG is low and that ketones are a real possibility.

The vomiting started 3 days ago I took him to the vet this afternoon. The vet said his kidneys were fine and that he was dehydrated and he had a high temp but didn't tell me how high.

If there's any way you can get Oliver to an emergency veterinary clinic I would go as soon as possible - immediately if you can. He seems to be developing problems that will need medical care and monitoring. You probably can't do what's necessary at home. Vomiting and not eating for a few days can cause serious illness in a diabetic cat. He's also had a recent high dose of insulin which adds to the complicating factors.

Please do as Linda suggests and take him to an emergency clinic ASAP. I agree with her 100%, this sounds like his BG may be too low, and he needs medical care.

Brittany, is there not an emergency clinic in a nearby town. Where are you located?

In the meantime, you need to get Oliver's BG up so keep rubbing syrup on his gums or if he will lick it off your fingers give him whatever he will take.

I agree. Try calling nearby vet offices to see if they're open or if they have an automated message for what to do in an emergency. You might have to drive elsewhere ASAP to get Oliver treated.

Good. You may need to do that every few minutes or so. Please try calling around to any of the vets even remotely near you. I really think Oliver needs more help than you can give him at home.

The syrup will bring his BG up temporarily but it wears off quickly so give it liberally. Novolin's effect should have peaked already but with no food in his system, Oliver could have gone critically low and still be low because he doesn't have reserves from not eating. If you can get a bit of water into him that would be good too. Do you have a baby syringe that you could use or a small baster? If you do this, you have to be careful to only give tiny amounts at a time and put it into the side of his mouth so as not to choke him or get it down his windpipe.

I still think it would be best to get him to a vet because it will be difficult to get his glucose up and keep it up when he is not eating.

I know! That was my first thought but 3 units of Novolin on a BG of 235 taken at the vet sounds like hypo is likely at play and possibly the most urgent issue right this moment. The poor cat doesn't have any reserves to bring his BG up himself if he hasn't been eating for days. I too hope the silence is because they have found a vet .....hopefully one more savvy about diabetes, insulin and DKA if the cat has diabetes at all! I'm wondering how the diagnosis was reached because if Oliver had a fever that suggests an infection. That and vet stress alone could cause a reading of 235 calling the diagnosis of diabetes into question unless a fructosamine and urine test for glucose were done.

Yes, I agree. Three units is a huge starting dose. We seem to be seeing this type of thing more and more lately. What are these vets thinking?!? Praying that Oliver is on his way to the vet!

Can you call Animal Control...ask where the nearest emergency vet is and their phone number...if animal control is closed call 911 and explain the situation...there is always an animal control person on call and 911 will be able to put you in touch with them; call you nearest hospital emergency room and ask where they refer animal emergencies (they get this kind of question all the time); call any near by friend, family or coworker who is diabetic and explain the situation...they might be willing to let you get a spot BG with their meter. Remember this is a CRITICAL SITUATION and a REAL emergency. Please keep posting....

All great ideas! Is there a Walmart or any 24-hr store near you that might have a meter? As Ann has said, this is a real emergency. I'm so afraid that Oliver needs more help than you can give him at home! How is he now, any change?

Brittany, how did your vet diagnosis Oliver? Did he check his urine for glucose or run a test called Fructosamine?

I agree with Ann. Keep giving syrup. There must be some services available somewhere in your vicinity and that is your best choice for treating him.

You could also try watering down the bit of food to make a soup and see if Oliver will take that? Do you have any cat food that has gravy on it? You could try syringing a bit of the gravy into his mouth or some of the watered down cat food.

He isn't eating or drinking on his own but I have been giving him water and watered down wet food with a syringe and he seems to be doing better he is holding his head up and walking around still sluggish but seems to be okay for now. I am still watching him like a hawk. I live in the boondocks where every town around me still lives in the 50's I can't get him in anywhere. I plan on watching him all night. Thank you everyone whose has helped me. I'll keep y'all posted.

If he is still sluggish his BG is probably still very low. It's critical that you keep trying to get his BG up. The syrup is great but only lasts a little while. As Linda said, if you have any cat food that has gravy with it try, syringing some gravy, it is loaded with carbs (which is what Oliver needs right now). In the interim keep putting syrup on his gums.

I have been doing that and still am. We are playing a deadly waiting game tonight. It is killing me inside and I hate not being able to do more. I feel like its my fault for not taking him sooner... we thought the reason he was throwing up was because he ate a bug or something that didn't agree with his stomach. He is the first baby we ever got and his other 2 brothers and definitely his sister is worried about him. My baby nova hasn't left our side. Yall just pray for us tonight and hopefully everything will be okay. Thank Yall so much for the help.

Is there any people food that Oliver likes? For instance ice cream, whip cream, or sandwich meat that might entice him to eat something? It's vital to get food into him to get his BG up and keep it there and if you can get him started, he might try to eat himself.

Ok so keep giving him syrup for now. And don't beat yourself up. You're doing your best and you took Oliver to the vet when you concluded the problem wasn't just a bug. Has Oliver eaten at all in the last 3 days? Did the vet run any liver tests on Oliver? I'm sorry to say this but I seriously question your vet telling you to give any insulin much less 3 units to a cat that is not eating.

@BrittanyC How are things going? Please keep posting thru the night...just a sentence or two to let us know how you and Oliver are doing.

I think I would plan on being at the vet's office when it is due to open...don't even call for an appointment, they can walk you in as an emergency. Go armed with a list of questions: What is his blood sugar now? What is his fructosamine? What is his ketone level? What is his temperature? What do you think has caused him to stop eating and why do you think he was/is vomiting? Is he dehydrated? Does the vet think he has an infection? Ask for a full chemistry panel and a CBC at the minimum...he might need to have other blood work such as his thyroid levels checked, is he feline leukemia negative? etc. He might need a urine specimen to check for infection, blood, etc? Maybe a fecal specimen to check for worms? He should get a good physical exam too...including: checking his retinas (can see the blood vessels), checking his teeth/dental condition and oral mucosa, checking his ears, listening to his chest and belly, deep palpating of his abdominal organs and his thyroid, checking for pain with full movement of each leg, checking for pain along his backbone, checking his anal glands.

It's a lot to remember, so take notes of the vet's answers, ask for copies of lab work and X-ray reports. Then if the vet still thinks Oliver is diabetic, ask for specifics of his insulin dosing. Or, what is the working diagnosis and how are you going to care for Oliver? When does the vet want to see Oliver again?

Then the very last thing you want answered is how you are to manage emergencies again? Where is the emergency vet, what is their phone number, etc.

Thank you for the update Brittany. No doubt your nursing helped him through the night.:) Please confirm with your vet how the diabetes diagnosis was arrived at. Tests should include a blood fructosamine and checking urine for glucose. A one off check of blood in the vet's office can be very misleading. and even if the diabetes diagnosis has been verified with the right testing, do not give Oliver more than 1u to start with and preferably 0.5u. I'd also make sure they test him for ketones before taking him back home.

It would also be a good idea to find out if any liver function tests were done as not eating for days can lead to hepatic lipidosis which is also a serious condition. The other possibility is pancreatitis which can be checked with a quick test in the office. When you bring Oliver home, ask for an anti-nausea medication along with an appetite stimulant to try to get and keep him eating on his own again.

Thank you for the update! Please do follow Linda's (MrWorfMen's Mom) suggestions for things to confirm with your vet before bringing Oliver back home, she's given you some pertinent and important questions to ask.

Great job getting Oliver safely through the night!!! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

    He's a handsome guy! :)

I want y'all to know I got him a meter today and I already took my other babies blood sugar and they are in the clear. I plan on checking them once a month to make sure everything is going well. These are olives siblings little kitty, baby kitty, and nova. Nova is olives sister and they are always two peas in a pod. I am now so much more aware of cats with diabetes. So thank y'all a million.

That is one beautiful clowder you have. You are being very proactive and that will serve you well. And if your vet happens to argue with you about testing Oliver, ignore him because what you do at home is entirely up to you and home testing is the key to keeping kitty safe and getting them regulated. :)

I just read through all this on the West coast. I'm sending up prayers that Oliver gets better and that the vet knows what he is doing. Again, I am always amazed how the people on here work together.

Did you or the vet give insulin? Are they doing a curve? Am concerned that if the vet gives a PM high dose of insulin, there will be no one at the clinic overnight to monitor.

I'm sooo glad things are looking up! You have such a beautiful "family" too. I agree with Red & Rover .... would like to know the vet has plans for monitoring Oliver thru the night if he has had insulin. Please keep posting on how he is doing...and maybe you try to get a little rest tonite!

We are going to see him tomorrow. I talked to our vet to see how he is doing no change in the way he is acting but the vomiting has stopped and he wants to keep him for 48 hours to make sure he will be okay. Thank Yall for the prayers I have a prayer team on fbook through my family and friends. We need all the prayers we can get that my baby olly comes home.

Hi Brittany. We are all keeping Oliver, you and your family in our prayers. Has the vet given you any idea what he thinks caused Oliver to stop eating? Is Oliver now eating on his own at all? Please let us know how your visit goes and give Oliver a little scritch from us. mini-graphics-cats-242796.gif

Elmo didnt want to eat either during his stay until i hand fed him( little spoiled ?? YES!)...u might try hand feeding him and tell vet/vet tech if he is willing to eat this way ..I'm sure ur visit will help him along with a recently worn shirt or pjs with your scent on it to leave in his cage with him. I know how hard it is to see them all hooked up to IVs..broke my heart to see Elmo like that. Just remember there r a ton of people here thinking of and praying for you, your husband and Oliver!!!!!

Well Oliver is doing better he is going to stay another night. He is still receiving fluids and he is also getting antibiotics because billy (my vet ) thinks he was a infection as well which would be why he had the fever. Billy said his temp is 103 and that his blood sugar is now 112 which is good with all that has been going on. Billy also has been hand feeding him baby food. He said he got about 9 cc's in him when we went at 12 today. I brought Oliver my flannel I slept in last night and he curled right up to it. He is still not out of the woods yet but I thought I would let y'all know. Yall have been my biggest support system besides my family. My animals all 7 of them are my children. My husband and I don't have human kids but we have kitties and puppies that are our babies. People can be so rude and make fun when you care so much and get so upset over a cat. My mother in law was generally worried about Oliver and my co worker told her he died... when I heard that I said no he didn't die and she was like well I thought he did because you were crying in all last night on the phone. I told her I was on the phone with my nana and we were talking about the options if he doesn't get better because I don't want him to suffer. I love my babies more than life itself so I try to ignore stupid people. I want to thank all of you again for all the sweet words.

Oh Brittany. I am soooooo happy to hear Oliver is doing better. His BG of 112 is great. Still keeps me wondering if he really has diabetes though. An infection would explain the slightly elevated temp and the elevated BG the other day too.

I can just picture him snuggled into your flannel. AHHH! :joyful: Like you, I never had kids and my animals have always been my babies. Thankfully this community is a group of like minded individuals who treasure their furry critters and everyone understands how upsetting it is when they are sick.

And thank you for keeping us posted. We really do worry about all the kitties and caregivers we "meet" here so updates are very much appreciated!:bighug:

Good to hear Oliver is doing better!! Hopefully he'll be back home soon in your loving arms!!

I know how you feel about the snide comments too...I had to take my 86 year old mom to the ER today and although I'd do anything for her, I did mention that I had a diabetic cat that needed her insulin at 6 so I might leave at 5 and come back and get her if they didn't keep her (they didn't) and I heard several snickers from the nursing staff over it

Another reason I have little use for most humans.....although the people on this board are fantastic!!!!

My mother in law always says she like animals more than humans. I am the same way I think haha maybe I should try getting into vet school... im young enough and it doesn't matter what age your never to old for school. I was wondering if he was even diabetic myself but my vet swears he is and probably has a infection as well I don't know though which is hard. I plan to go see him aga in in the morning. Yall are awesome loving people.

Well now that you have a meter, you can test Oliver when he comes home (we'll help you with that) and make sure it's safe before giving him insulin.

One of my favourite quotes is "I have a hard time liking otherwise good people who do not like dogs." (Will Judy)
I just extend my version to anyone who doesn't cherish animals.

I love that quote. I will need to know when I need to use the meter and what is a safe level and not.
