    Hello Everyone,
My name is Deena and my seven year old Bengal Malachai (aka Malby or Peanut) just recently got diagnosed with diabetes.
My other Bengal, Basil has stage one kidney failure. :(
Expenses are adding up....my vet recommended I purchase the Alphatrak 2 Glocose Meter which I did. After my research I learned the expensive test strips are where the company "gets you." I've read that the less expensive Freestyle Lite strips can be substituted with very similar results. Does anyone have an Alphatrak 2 meter and use the alternative strips? I'm wondering what number I need to program my AT to to work with the FL strips?
I'm just learning how to navigate this site so if anyone also knows a thread I should be reading, could you please attach a link!? Any direction would help! Thankyou!

Hi Deena and Malachai. Welcome to FDMB, the best place you never wanted to be. What a handsome fellow Malachai is. Gorgeous! As a pet meter user myself, I can attest to the expense of using it. I also have a human meter and all the reference numbers on this site are based on use of a human meter. The human meter is completely safe and accurate using the proper reference numbers provided here.

While it is possible to use the FS strips in the AT2 meter with readings being "in the ballpark", I'd quite frankly recommend you simply return the AT2 meter if possible and get yourself a human meter. If you are in the US, many folks here use the Relion Micro or Confirm meters which are inexpensive and their strips are considerably less expensive than even the FS strips. If you are in another location, let us know and we can get you other recommendations if you want to go to a human meter.

If you still want to use the AT2 meter with the FS strips there are a few things you need to know about doing so. This board is just for introductions and doesn't get a lot of viewing. We prefer to deal with specific care issues such as what you are proposing over on the Health board so that the information you receive is peer reviewed. There are a number of threads about this topic if you do a search but it never hurts to ask again so the info you get is current.

Please come join us over in Health HERE and we'll help you in any way we can.

I've answered this on another thread because I routinely use FS strips in my AT meter.
