@Critter Mom ......hi Mogs...just took +4...110 ...drop of 10'points in 30 minutes.....let him have teaspoon low carb...ate eagerly. Has come to mind that what may have happened yesterday is that when I stopped monitoring at +4 , the too high dose of thyroid took his whole system down and caused body to respond with raising his BG.....today's dose was 3/4 pill instead of whole pill so praying there is good response to that. Your suggestions on monitoring BG this afternoon???

Yep! Might want to throw in a +11 to see whether Elmo's rising come PMPS.

Verrrrry interesting cycle. I suggest keeping a detailed note of exactly what you fed today (food brand & variety, carb values for same, times of feeding). It could be very helpful to refer back to.

You're not messing up. By the time you do PS, feed, wait a bit then shoot it's 12 hours since the previous shot that's what counts.
Do you prefer a rubber curry brush or natural bristle?

Just keep doing what you're doing, Beth.

With the likes of Lantus you can test, feed and inject within minutes so PS times are pretty much bang on the 12 hours. Because you need to wait a little while after the meal before giving Vetsulin it's necessary to do the preshot test a little earlier.

Are you referring to the 120 followed by the 110, Beth? I wouldn't be too fussed about that. These little ups and downs are a normal part of the physiology. It's the trends (going up, down or staying level) that rule rather than individual numbers for the most part.

Kris, I guess it's the 125 at +6 that hit me as lower than usual but looking at SS I don't have many comparable sand it could be my lack of sleep....just found the +6 curious...thot it would be higher...called Dr Pat and she said to alternate between 3/4 morning and 1/2 evening on thy med and see how he does...mercy

Nice run for Elmo! Loving it! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I'd call Mark's Marine and see about shipping the Lantus at this time of year. I think they sometimes hold off shipping if a big blow is in the offing. They should be able to give you an idea of shipping times which might help you decide.

If you have a gander at my girl's spreadsheet and look at her + 11 PM readings on 27Nov16 (Yeah for bright green!), you'll see how to do it. This was a morning I had to stall due to low numbers. The only trick is to use the space bar rather than the enter key before entering each new reading and you may need to put 3 or 4 spaces after each to keep the readings on separate lines and legible. Any problems, just holler.

    Warning Momentary Thread Hijack! :woot:

Menace passed her physical with flying colours today. We saw a new vet at the clinic who specialized in reproductive endocrinology. Not quite a diabetic specialist but at least she's got the basics to the same level as my usual vet if not a little more. She was thrilled to see Menace's spreadsheet and had apparently gone back to review Menace's records and my email/telephone conversations with our usual vet before our visit today. This vet proved herself to be up to date (although she like my usual vet has not used Levemir ), practical (no infuriating wet food diet lectures), good listener and communicator and most importantly, very gentle but thorough examining my little sweetheart. I count myself lucky that I now have TWO vets I trust to look after my furballs! This visit was like an early Xmas present! Menace and I are very proud of her report card which in summary reads:

"Menace was a good patient as usual and was very brave for her check up. Keep up the good work, her glucose curves show a very dedicated owner."

I have FDMB to thank for being able to keep Menace in tip top shape and for all the progress we have made! I love FDMB! :D:bighug::D:bighug::D:bighug::D:bighug::D

    Tip:

Use ALT-Enter (aka ALT-Return) to force a carriage return to move to another line without leaving the spreadsheet cell. Hit Enter (Return) when you've finished, as normal.

Will send vet script later tonight...it seems sketchy to me, like he was unsure what he is doing. As crazy as it sounds , my DH, myself and my 94 yr old DM take no meds so getting scripts filled is not a natural occurrence....we r a hardy lot...

Beth did he write a script for the pens or for a vial?

You want to get the pens because they last longer and you can pretty much use them up whereas there will be waste (and a lot of it at small doses) with the 10ml vial. Many vets are not familiar with or don't order the pens because we don't use the pen to inject and they don't know you can use the pen as a small vial with a syringe. Something to check because I don't think Mark's can legally substitute one for the other.

Actually, yes they can.....If the vet wrote for the vial, you just need to call them (800 number so its free) and ask for the pens instead.....since insulin is OTC in Canada, the pharmacist has the option to swap them

Good to know. I know we can do it here but we don't need a script. I thought the fact that they require a script from US folks might negate that option.

No....the insulin WalMart sells over the counter is NOT Lantus (although some pharmacists will try to convince you it's the same thing)

All these have half unit markings and are the correct syringes for U100 insulin and are available from ADW online:
    UtiCare
    Monoject
    Carepoint
    Sure Comfort
    BD Ultra-Fine

They're also available at WalMart if you have one near you.. Their Relion Brand 3/10ml, 3o or 31 gauge, 8mm insulin syringes all come with half unit markings and are only $12.58 for a box of 100 (although it seems a lot of WalMart employees don't realize that they DO come with half unit markings!!)

Get a box of 5....about $175 including shipping and that's enough to last over 2 years on Elmo's dose!! Makes it less than $8/month

Ya'll...I'll admit it(as if u don't already know) I know I'm going to do this, I know it's best for Elmo but it still makes me bit nervous...vetsulin is crap but I know what to expect with it. Note, I am not going to keep using it but it is a bit scary to me to switch. If I didn't have all of you I'd be really nervous.

if you actually bought Lantus at WalMart, it would be close to $300 for a 10ml vial (that you'd end up throwing most of away) or a box of 5 will cost you around $500-$600

THAT'S why we buy from Marks!!!.....LOL

I use the Relion's from WalMart but any of those syringes will work....just kind of depends on if you want to order online or get them at a store nearby....and some people really prefer one brand over another

The syringes I get are $12.58 for a box of 100

and I don't need a script for syringes so you shouldn't either, but some pharmacists/stores will have their own policy

I just walk in and ask for a box of Relion 3/10ml, 31 gauge insulin syringes (although sometimes they don't have the 31 gauge and I have to get 30 gauge)

Beth, you may not realise it but you have so much more knowledge and skill now than you did when you first started treating Elmo with insulin; it will stand to your credit during and after the switch (and you won't be alone while switching!).

It's true that you'll have to start learning Elmo's new pattern when he switches insulins (which, being honest, can feel like going back to square one - I felt like that for the first few days) but as you start accumulating data for Elmo after the switch each day will get easier and you'll regain your confidence really quickly! :)

Beth you have not embarrassed yourself at all. We all get a little punchy when we don't get enough sleep and we are overloading our brains with info. On a couple of occasions in the last year or so, I have had to resort to giving Menace a BCS (big chicken shot) because I knew I had to look after me first or I'd be in no fit shape to look after her if/ when she really needed me. You have to find a balance and hopefully the switch to Lantus with a brief learning curve, will afford you more peace of mind and an ability to get a good, sound (and longer) sleep that doesn't come quite so easily with Vetsulin when you get down to lower numbers.

    If I were a teacher, I'd give you a

That's interesting given he surfed so athletically today! Bigger bump to PMPS than I expected. Keeping things as consistent as possible is a good idea so we can at least try to pinpoint any "anomalies" so yes I'd be just fine with 0.25 minus small drop but if you are really tired and want to go with minus a full drop, that's OK too. Remember Beth, this isn't just about Elmo. It's about both of you so you both stay in good shape! I'm waffling here because of that big drop he did so early last night. I think this is your call Beth.

I really like what Linda said about this being about you as well as Elmo. Yes, you want the best for Elmo but you have to factor in what you feel up to at any point in time. Tired and stressed - be conservative ... feeling more confident and have time to monitor/steer - be a bit more aggressive. Sometimes the beans forget that they have to look after themselves.

Ok I don't have any cheerleaders wearing parkas but it's really not THAT bad where I am. Kris may have a different opinion though! LOL!
