Hi, So glad I found this forum. Chloe was just diagnosed today. She is 7 years old and we got her from our local animal shelter. She is not overweight at all so we are surprised she has diabetes. Our other cat is huge and she's as healthy as a horse! The vet has recommended insulin injections but we haven't started yet. She wants her to be admitted for her first day on insulin and later for a glucose curve. Sounds expensive but she's such a sweetheart I figure we have to give it a try. Looking forward to learning from you all.

Hi Chloe's mom. Welcome. If you have any questions go to the main forum- Feline Health and ask away. Since you don't have insulin yet you could just read the stickeys at the beginning of the different insulin groups to get a feel for things. The several things to think about is diet and home testing. Diet alone can reduce (or increase) BG numbers by a considerable amount. Also home testing is critical. Not only will it keep Chloe safe but you will also save a lot of money by not having to pay the vet to do what you can easily do at home. My vet told me the very first visit to get a meter and home test. Morris has never had a curve done at the vet. Only at home.

Welcome to you and Chloe! We can certainly help you. There's a steep learning curve but you'll surprise yourself with how competent/confident you'll become. Please repost on the main health forum and tell us:
    • what insulin you'll be using
    • what dose (when you know your vet's recommendation)
    • whether you'll be testing blood glucose at home and, if so, what meter you'll use
    • what you feed Chloe.
Kudos to you for giving an adult kitty a new home and being willing to take on her diabetes. :) FYI -my guy wasn't overweight either.

Thanks for the welcome. We are just waiting for the vet to email us an estimate for the cost of the initial in patient day on insulin and the day for the curve. They are also testing her for a bladder infection and doing a fructosamine test and we'll go from there. Once we know better I'll post on the main forum.

Welcome =) I am kind of surprised they are doing the curve the first day of starting insulin because she won't have a depot and she'll be scared/ stressed at the vet. Will follow up on your posts on Main forum :cat:

Thanks for saving her and being willing to treat her! I know it can be intimidating and scary at first, but diabetes is very treatable, and with cats remission is very possible for many cats. We are here to help.

Get her on an all wet low carb diet. Vets push prescription food. Not needed. Most of us feed fancy feast classic or Friskies pate foods. No gravy and NO dry. The ONLY diabetic friendly dry foods are Evo cat and kitten in the purple bag and my favorite Young Again Zero carb food. Youngagainpetfood.com (they will send a sample of you ask).

They'll be doing the curve 7-10 days after she starts on insulin.
