For newbies like me

Just wanted to post this. When my cat, Tootsie was diagnosed this past December, and I had to start giving insulin and checking blood glucose, I was freaking out. The very 1st check I had to do, (keeping in mind I work for 5 general surgeons) I asked my husband to accompany me. All I had to do was check her glucose and give her a shot, but I was shaky, nervous, full of anxiety. He followed me in the room and said " ok, what do you want me to help you with?" And I replied" Nothing. I just want you to be here with me, I'm scared." Lol! I was so scared I'd screw something up and kill my Tootsie. My husband watched me and I looked at him for reassurance. I didn't want him to help, I just wanted to do this myself, but needed him with me. He nodded and smiled with his encouraging look as I gave the first shot. (He's also diabetic) I was afraid I would hurt her or screw something up... but... I didn't. I was so happy! Well, here we are 2 months later, many shots and checks later, and I can do it blindfolded! Don't give up!

 

How is Tootsie doing?

 

Well, she's a happy cat, no matter what. But I think she is "bouncing" she is usually high premeal blood glucose, but sometimes low. I never know what I'm gonna get with her readings. We are going back to the vet in a few weeks to mabe change her insulin. She's on Novalin n twice daily.

 

Have you considered setting up a spreadsheet like we use here so we can have a look and maybe offer some useful advice?

 

Such an inspiring story for all new folks to see. Made me smile because I went through a similar experience. I'm a retired R.N. so stabbing people with needles didn't bother me at all but when it came to my furry kid, I was a basket case and thought I'd never get my hand to stop shaking. I was petrified I was going to hurt her! I soon realized it was no big deal but I have to give my girl some credit because she has been a model patient since day one.

Yes, thank heavens for model patients! Teasel is one and I count that blessing at every test and injection.

 

You got that right! My first week I pictured them both hiding behind the furnace but they were so patient. People in pharmacies still give me that slack-jawed look, "A cat?"

 

Patients... Ham is the best. The first time I tried to check his sugar I stuck the lancet straight through, so that evening I got the pen and clicked it twice and he was ready. Ever since I get the pouch that holds the glucometer and he comes right over. He even let me shave his butt today without any problems. I don't know how I got so lucky

 

Maybe we all got lucky because we all really care.
