Molly 12 years old was diagnosed as diabetic this past Dec. We started her on one unit of caninsulin twice daily. In January I was finding no big difference in her other then maybe a little more playful. Her water intake and pee output was continuing the same. So I went to book a appointment with the vet to only find out she only sometimes works out of the clinic we were using. So that left me in a jam, either I travel a longer distance to the other clinic or take the opportunity to seek out a second opinion. We chose to go with the second opinion.

This new clinic suggested we start her on Lantus to see if it made any difference which I was fine with doing. However they suggested I cut Molly back to just 4 ounces of food a day breaking it into two equal portions. She told me to only allow her 2 hrs to finish what I gave her and then remove the food. Well Molly has been a free fed kitty all her life so I'm really not comfortable with set feeding and well that amount just seems to be such a small amount. She was 16 lbs and has dropped down to 14 lbs by me just removing the treats and the little bit of kibble she would eat at night.

Molly has been much more playful on the lantus and her water intake has decreased quite a bit as has her pee amounts. But I'm finding the last couple days her appetite is crazy, almost like she can't get enough food or what she's getting isn't satisfying her. Currently she's eating a tin of fancy feast in the day and tin of Friskies overnight. All pates no gravies or starches. But I'm wondering if maybe I should try her with a different food like Natures Variety that might be a little higher in protein.

Her sugars are usually consistent in the 14.9 range (Canada)

    Welcome.
Lantus is better than Caninsulin/Vetsulin for most cats.
What are you feeding? A low-carb canned is best. No reason for a prescription food.
4 oz per day is not really enough for a normal sized cat and not close for a 16 lb cat. The rule of thumb is 5.5/6 oz per day for a 8-10 lb cats

When were those measured with respect to shot time?

Sorry trying to learn the ropes and only want what's best for Molly. Will ask in the correct forum.

When were those measured with respect to shot time?

She pretty much maintains that throughout the day. Whether it be 4 hrs past her morning shot or pre-shot. I haven't done a curve on her since starting Lantis will do one soon but wanted to fix her food up first.
