    Hello all,

It has been awhile since I have visted the board but I wanted to let you all know that I have been working many hours over the past 3 months to update the protein/fat/carb/phosphorus food chart. Here is the new link: http://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf

If the old link is used, it will still go to the old chart. I can't seem to get the re-direct to work but I will keep working on it.

Over the past year I have had several people ask me when I was going to update the chart and my standard reply has been "when hell freezes over or pigs fly"....given what a incredibly time-consuming nightmare the chart is to compile.

But...in Dec of last year I decided to tackle it again and the new chart is actually twice as long as the old one. This PDF is 63 pages long and the old one was about half of that. If anyone prints it, they will kill a lot of trees. Plus, I don't have a printer-friendly (removing the shading so not so much ink is used) version available yet.

Users of the chart will also notice that I put a request for donations at the top of the chart for TLC Cat and Kitten Rescue so that homeless cats and kittens can benefit from the gazzilion hours I put into compiling the thousands of data points contained on the chart.

Regarding updating the sortable chart - that will not be done since someone else did that I and I do not know how to set one up so what is there will just have to be enough. There will also not be a chart for ascending phosphorus values like there was before.

You will also note that I streamlined the chart and removed DMB data. Only ME (calorie-basis) values are shown which is the best way to look at food composition.

And, finally, keep in mind that the numbers on the chart are VERY loose so don't get neurotic about whether a food says 7% carb or 10% carb because they are virtually the same number. Due to the way carbs are figured, a food that states 10% carb content could even be 0% or 2%. Food compositon numbers are just not that accurate.

I hope that the new chart is of help to all of you.

    Edited on 04/23/2017 to add:
Food Chart update - a new sortable chart with filters that is linked in the upper left corner of my food chart

Hi there! Long time no see! :)

Thank you, thank you, and thank you! Thank you for the endless hours and devotion it takes to tackle a project like this... not once, but twice! I'd also like to personally thank you for including information on "why" dry kibble is not recommended for cats... any cats... whether they have diabetes or not. It pains me to see the ever increasing amount of posts on the FDMB recommending Young Again and Evo as "diabetic friendly" dry kibble right from the get-go... before encouraging feeding wet food or explaining why, as well as explaining all the pitfalls from feeding a water depleted diet such as dry kibble!

Members often justify the suggestion with the availability of extra water bowls and fountains throughout the house. Your point is well made and shouldn't be forgotten or glossed over:

"Water-depleted diets do not promote urinary tract health and they signifcantly increase your cat's risk for very painful and potentially fatal urethral obstructions, as well as other urinary tract problems. Please see Opie’s pictures or a good look at the tremendous amount of suffering that dry food often causes. Cats have a low thirst drive and consume ~50% more water when on a wet diet versus a dry diet. This is considering all water sources: food + water bowl."

    Thanks, Dr. Lisa!

Thank you Dr. Lisa! For all of your information :cat: Is there a formula you use to calculate the carb content or just calling the companies? There are some brands with no information.

Dr. Lisa, many of us have discovered how difficult it is to get this info for just one manufacturer. The fact that you did this AGAIN for so many brands is beyond amazing. Many of us here refer to your list on a regular basis. I have the PDF on my smart phone for when I go shopping. You have no idea how much we appreciate this. Bless you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dr. Lisa, just wanted to mention that the data on the bottom of page 9 and top of page 10 is cut off.

Again, thank you so much for all the time and effort that went into this!

I deeply appreciate all of the notes of "thanks" - they really mean a lot to me and help heal my cramped hands from data entra and my sore ear from spending time on the phone begging some companies for information. I spent 2 hours on the phone last night with one company and, in total, I will bet that I have spent over 4 hours on the phone with just Petsmart hassling with that disrespectful company....the only one that has made it to my List of Shame.

Tricia - I saw that problem on the top of page 10 today at 4 AM but was too tired to fix it but it is fixed now.

I just want to reiterate that I am still expecting more data to come in so if anyone is thinking about printing this 'book' hold off because the chart is definitely not complete.

If there is enough interest, I will consider putting a more printer-friendly (less the shading) version linked to the current PDF.

I also want to thank those of you who have donated via the chart PDF. Kitten season is upon us and I am really focusing on spay/neuter efforts. (Just a package of suture material can cost $7-$8....)

Count me in on this. Even though I already downloaded it to my phone, I keep a hard copy in the drawer next to my computer to refer to when someone on the Board has a question about a food (of course I also recommend they go look at your site themselves ;)).

Thanks. I can relate. I am often online doing stuff at 4:00 am, and it's not always my best work. :p

    Hello all,

Well...I am somewhat embarrassed to say that I just spent 22 hours figuring out Google Sheets to put the chart into a sortable format and I also re-formatted it to make it more printer-friendly which turned out to much more time-consuming than I thought it would be. No doubt that many of you could have gotten this done in 1/100th the time that it took me but this old dog does not learn new tricks very quickly.

The links to the sortable and print formats are located at the top/left corner of the chart but...if anyone is planning on printing all 47 pages (down from 67 pages) I would wait. I have more data coming in and I also need to find the time to call Mars and sit on the phone with them for few more 2 hour sessions.

No, I am not exaggerating. They would not SEND me the data that I wanted so I made them read it to me over the phone. The last call (my 4th one so far...) lasted exacly 1 hour and 59 minutes...just to get some Sheba, Nutro, etc., data.

So far, the chart has 1,110 canned foods with 5 data points each. No wonder I have a headache and cramped hands.....

Here is the link to the sortable chart but it is also on the main chart:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...m6PPfEUz9YmzMGMxkmcBk6uRR0/edit#gid=113878384

Plesae note that there are 2 tabs - one for data and one for notes.

I want to again thank those of you who have donated to TLC. We really appreciate your support as we try to get as many reproductive organs out of circulation as possible and to feed the ones we have already fixed.

Question for you guys: is everyone able to access the sortable chart? Are you able to download it to your own computer so you can manipulate it for your own needs?

This is the first time I have used Sheets and I want to make sure it has been done correctly.

I also want to confirm did that the Sheet is locked so that nobody can edit it unless downloaded to their own computer.

I am able to access the chart, sort it, and unable to make edits :). I have not downloaded the sheet though, I just have it bookmarked.

Thank you for all that you do, wish we could help you gather information.

    Hi Dr. Pierson,

I wanted to add my thanks to all the others for the time, energy, frustration that you have spent on these lists - it is sooooooo appreciated. I hope you don't mind but I forwarded the link to my vet - because after many years I have finally gotten him to agree that not all commercial food is bad and not much of the prescription food is good!!

Thank you very much for your herculean effort!!

Guys...I need your help. Above I asked:

.....but I have had no responses from anyone confirming that they can download it. I just got a message from the person helping me with my website and she said that she canNOT download it but I would have figured that if there was a problem then someone would have let me know by now.

I cannot test it on my end since I am the owner of the Sheet.

Thank you for updating your chart Dr. Lisa. Your chart is my bible when it comes to food for my diabetic kitties and I have shared it with so many people. It is an invaluable resource.

I am currently unemployed but I hope that will change soon and as soon as it does, I will make a donation.

My Keno also has kidney disease and I'm unsure how to use the phos info in the new chart, as I've always used the DMA for phos and tried to stay under 1.00. Can anyone help me out with how to convert the mg Phos/100 kcals to Phos DM?

    thanks,
    Jeanette

Most try to find a food that's low carb and as much under 200 phosphorus as you can get. Tanya'scrf.org has updated her chart as well and she uses DMA so that might help too.

Just wondering why the new list doesn't include raw food. I'm trying to find a good quality food for 6 1/2 month old kittens and don't want to grind or make my own. One has had pudding stool on fancy feast and wellness kitten. Tge other has kind of dry. Im trying Primal frozen nuggets and adding pumpkin but don't know if I'm helping or hurting them. I've cooked chicken thighs and they love them.

I have 2 Questions about the FF Natural information on the new chart. Can I safely assume that 1. The FF Natural on your chart is the same as the packages of Pure FF with label "Natural..." and 2. The calories are per the 2 oz. container. I cannot thank you enough for all the great information you have provided. Being new to all this the issues are overwhelming. So many questions having a good local Vet just isn't enough. Thank you.

    Dr. Lisa,

I am new. My Fergus was DX very recently. He also is a urinary issue survivor with a PU.

I cannot explain to you how thankful for the list you provided I am. That list gave me tangible hope, to have some grasp on what is going on right now. My cat may not be ok in the long run and I may not have made the most informed choices in the past, but this gave me hope. He means the world to me.

I am especially grateful for the four phone calls at two hours each that you made to the makers of Sheba.

I was so happy my former urinary SO dry food eating cat, liked Sheba. When I read the updated sheet and saw the stats I was so releaved. The fact that it is in the grocery AND it is within acceptable range of allowed phosphorous made me want to weep with joy.

That time made a huge difference in my life and in Fergus'. It means everything that there is a person out there like you.

    Thank you.

    Hi Dr Lisa,
My cat Valentin is 17 years old he has kidney disease and was diagnosed as diabetic in may 2017, after home testing him and giving him insulin, he has not needed insulin since June 19th, I hope he is in remission. I am no longer feeding him dry food except as a treat and he begs all day for dry food, he now eats canned food Hills KD and Royal Canin Renal Support, but looking at your food chart which is by the way a work of art, I noticed that what he is eating has a content in carbohydrate of over 10% , and since he is a diabetic cat also ( maybe in remission) he should eat food with a low carbohydrate content. What should I do? What kind of food should he eat since he has kidney problems and is also diabetic. Is there a type of food with low protein content for renal disease and low carbohydrate content for diabetic disease? What is the maximum % of protein content should his food contain for his renal problems?
He does not eat a lot, how many calories should he eat per day, he weighs 9.6 pounds, should he eat a whole can of 5.5 ounces per day?
Do you consider that he could be in remission? I read that after 14 days without insulin a diabetic cat could be in remission.
    Gigi from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Here is a link to a chart that lists food that are appropriate for diabetic cats with kidney issues: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/112NvvzgxEBOtkb42rA0XR8GeShw9xXs9kccf9-olK7I/pubhtml

As far are if your cat is in remission and how many calories he should eat, you can post on the Main Forum to get responses to your questions: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/feline-health-the-main-forum.28/ This thread is really just for the food chart.

Dr. Pierson, Thank you so much for your work on this food chart and for your website. We are going to try going with the homemade food recipe that you suggest, but we also want to be up-to-speed on the canned food options (and plan to give canned food periodically) so that we would have canned food as an option in emergencies.

Hi Karen! Welcome (back) to FDMB!

Are you home testing your sweet Govi? You need to be home testing before transitioning to low carb food, to keep Govi safe from potential hypos. You may find that Govi's insulin dose needs to be lowered.

The best and safest way to switch from high carb dry to low carb canned is to do it gradually, over a period of time. This is easiest on kitty tummies, and safer for diabetic kitties where you need to be alert to any BG or behavioral changes.

Yes I'm still trying to learn how to do a spreadsheet but bar that I do home test last week she read a 52 where she's always been around 2:50 she was getting three units twice a day Lantus and now we're down to just started a half of unit once a day and she's at 2:10 I apologize for not having a spreadsheet I'm just getting back into this and learning how to do it the reason I was asking about transitioning from the dry toucan it's because she had got constipated two years ago and had to be manually evacuated which wasn't nice and she's been good since then using Miralax and or pumpkin I do not want that to happen again and last time I tried to switch from dry I felt her stools were getting hard so that's what I'm in the process of doing right now since that slight hypo scare last week

Gotcha. Okay, spreadsheet: first you need a google account, then follow these Instructions for Setting up a Spreadsheet. If you have difficulty with it, sing out, there are lots of people who can give you a hand with getting it set up (unfortunately, not me, I had to get help myself, lol). Once you have it set up, you'll see it's pretty easy to work with, really just data entry, but sometimes our method for entering times can be confusing; THIS should help explain it all.

I'm so glad you're home testing, that's great! What meter are you using? 52 is a very low number! Was that at the beginning, end, or nadir (lowest part) of the cycle?

I have a civvie who gets Miralax at every meal. I also add extra water to his food, since Miralax depletes moisture. Pumpkin is good, too! I would think she'd be less apt to have constipation issues on wet food than on dry.

So great to see you Dr. Lisa! Wow wow wow on updating the list. Computers were supposed to save time but simple things always seem to take longer than they should. I was just thinking about that chart the other day and wondering where I would look if I ever needed it. Hope all is well with you. : )

thank you so much for this chart. my 10yr old sickly kitty was officially diagnosed with diabetes today and your list has made my job of going to buy various lower carb food tomorrow, in hopes to find one or two that my cat will eat and that the others will like too, a lot easier. sadly your list also made me see that the soulistic good fortune cans that is the only flavor that all my 8 older cats like is higher in carbs than i realized (17%) and i just finished giving a can of it to my diabetes cat an hour ago :(. so much to learn..

Putting the information here for anyone that may need it on Rawz Canned Cat Food.

Below are the figures you have requested. The figures are given on an “As Fed” (the contents as they are in the can) and “Dry Matter” (the contents when moisture is not factored into the equation) basis. Most veterinarians and nutritionists prefer Dry Matter figures for comparison, but I figured I would give you both just in case. You will notice that the carbohydrate levels are negative numbers. Whenever you see a
negative number, it just means that the percentage is almost negligible. This makes sense for the
cans since they are 96% meat – the only real carbohydrate source in RAWZ cans are the fenugreek
seeds, which have a very small amount of carbohydrates. And we only use a small amount of them,
so their carb contribution is quite small. Also, the figures I was given were rounded to the nearest
one hundredth. This could also explain why I might get a negative number for carbs – the other
figures (which are all subtracted from 100, as well as ash, to get the carbohydrate figure) may have
been slightly larger than shown, resulting in a negative number.

I have also received the following dry matter % on phosphorus.

RAWZ 96% Chicken & Chicken Liver Pâté
    Dry Matter Phosphorus: 1.41%

RAWZ 96% Turkey & Turkey Liver Pâté

Hello Dr. Lisa - Firstly, thank you for your tireless work on this site and compiling the food charts. I cannot tell you how much this information has helped in getting my sweet boy regulated AND in addition needing to find low phos foods for kidney issues. I have been looking on information regarding the Nutro foods. My boy loves the Natural Choice line. I had found an older spreadsheet from 2012 that has some of the Natural Choice and the Max Cat lines listed, but am concerned that these may be outdated and the recipes may have changed since then. I have tried contacting the company myself to no avail. They have given me mostly just "generic" information stating that I need to follow vet recommendations in feeding my pet. Is there a reason none of the Nutro Natural Choice or Max Cat lines are not listed on the newest food chart from 2017?

thank you for any light you can shed on this.

I'm still trying to get my kitties off canned and on to raw now. Honey likes it fairly well! She's my skinny IBD kitty with perfect labwork. She eats voraciously so I'm hoping to get all of them, especially her, off the bad canned stuff (fancy feast).

Ive had a look through this new spreadsheet....

WOW!! It must have taken you some time to sort out all of that info....What a fab person you are for doing so!!

Im based in the UK & cant find the food brand Im feeding Jack on the list (Wiskers 7+ wet food pouches meat/fish in jelly)

Is there a seperate list of world foods I could look at or will I need to calculate it myself?
I did find an old spreadsheet that included world foods & I recell seeing my food brand on there listed as low carb so continued to use it but just want to make double sure.

    Thanks!

Just another thank you, Dr. Lisa. With the help of your food chart and the help of others here, our kitty is already in remission. I was using your chart, once again, as we were shopping today and I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your time and knowledge. It's greatly appreciated.

I have just switched diets drastically for Nugget. She ate Purina One dry food almost exclusively, and now we have switched to Castor and Pollux Organix and Pristine diets. I bought the small 3 oz cans at Petco to see which flavors she prefers, and I'm glad you posted this and that I read it! I didn't realize how many more carbs there were in some of the flavors than others. I am still so very new to this and I am so worried about diet and if I am feeding Nugget enough, or the right thing. I was naively looking at calories (so that I can maintain her weight so no adjustments are necessary to her insulin dose), and not the percentage of carbs in the food.

Your chart is so detailed and comprehensive and is a great resource for me. Thank you very much!

I just saw this list, i have never seen or heard of 'RAWS' cat food, i dont think it is in south Fla. I can get wet Friskies. I have their list ,with their listing of the best foods for diabetes. The FISH AND SHRIMP FEAST is 86% protein and 0% carbs. they have a list of like 15 others with LOW carbs and high protein, that are recommended for diabetes diets.

SORRY it is FANCY FEAST wet foods! Not Friskies. That is what i had her on and thats who makes the FISH AND SHRIMP FEAST wet. That is what i can get easily and she will eat it if I add water to it over and over,it is very dry,for a wet food, but ti is all fish and shrimp...thats it! So it is 'dryish'....no gravy. sorry for the mistake. NOT Friskies.....it is Fancy Feast.

It is fairly new. Pink labels. It is nice for IBD kitties as it doesn't use gums and is limited ingredients. It can be found in the specialty pet food stores.

Tracey and Jones. 'Specialty Food Stores' for pets. ?? I have never heard of these places, I have heard of PetCo, thats about it. 'Specialty Food STORE'? That means expensive food. Raw food that needs to be cooked, or fresh food that is made daily and cost a fortune to buy. If i cant afford VET prescription special foods, how do I find and afford Specialty food store cat foods?

Fancy feast is fine for your cat, you don’t have to buy expensive cat food, Raws is expensive as I had tried it for my cat and he didn’t like it, I had never heard of it either

Please note that the data for Solid Gold is in DMB (dry matter basis) units, not the ME (caloric) units used for my chart. Therefore, they are not comparable.

I have been contacting Nutro for their numbers. I have received the dry matter analysis, should I ask for something different?

    Thanks,

I followed your formula to convert DMB to % calories. I posted it in the main health forum. I think my math is correct.

Thank you so much for creating catinfo.org. Coby is in remission but dealing with CKD now. But my young cats are starting out their cat life in the right direction.

Honestly, I do not know what I would do without your website and this chart! Thank you, Dr. Pierson.

I am a high school teacher in Central Florida and during Open House, I have parents that come through and ask for "that website about cat nutrition". I laugh and say that I ought to just print up business cards with your website on it and pass it out to cat people that I meet. I promise that I won't do that, but I have thought about it. :D Again, thank you!!
