My 15 yr old cat, Pia, was just diagnosed yesterday. I wasn't able to talk to the Dr directly yet, but she didn't seem in a rush to see her. Idk any of her numbers and I'm worried about waiting til Monday. She is acting normal, purring up a storm. She very easily stopped eating dry food and now only eats wet. Should I harass the Dr?

I see no problem with waiting until Monday especially since you changed to dry, to talk to the vet on what is next.

Welcome. Since you will be waiting until Monday to see the vet, now is a good time to learn all about feline diabetes so you will know what to ask her. It's great that you've switched to wet food. Be sure it's low carb, no gravy, grain, potatoes, tapioca, peas or other starches. You can also take this time to learn how to home test Pias blood glucose. It's easy to do and is the best way to keep her safe and know how well the insulin is working. Here's some info to get you started.

    Welcome!
Grats on a smooth change from the dry to wet diet, that can significantly lower her Blood Glucose (BG) numbers and is better to do before they start insulin (if needed). What wet food are you feeding?
Take this weekend to read a little about feline diabetes. It can be very overwhelming because there is lots of information here! :) Feel free to ask any questions on the Main Health Forum :bighug:

I'm feeling very overwhelmed. Very nervous. The Dr just called. Her sugar levels were 435. She's going in Monday and I'm.gonna take it from there. Til then I'll wait, anxiously.

As of right now I only have fancy feast. But it's PATE only. I know I need a better one.

Actually FF pate is fine. A lot of members feed that as well as Friskies pate (non-indoor formula) because they are also budget friendly :). Here is a food chart we refer to if you want to check the carb % of the ones you are feeding. Most aim for 8% or less :cat:

Thank you so much. It really helps to have this support. Especially in these early stages.

That's actually what we would have suggested... Most of us feed fancy feast classic or Friskies pate. It is totally overwhelming... But after a few weeks will be routine. Don't let the vet sell you on the prescription food, it's no better.

Please consider learning how to home test. It's really easy (after the first week or two) and is the best way to know if the numbers are too high or low.

Thank you. I actually lucked out with my vet. She's very down to earth and honest. She said, don't get anything from me, go online, it's cheaper, She also said after a week or two she recommends me doing the testing. She's also a mobile vet which makes me feel more at ease.
