Ah, this thread has the picture!

It does look like charcoal. Why do you think he threw it up?

could he have put his feet in houseplant dirt and then put his food in the water?

If he's been throwing up lately, and is really sick and hasn't moved in a couple of days, I think he needs to see the vet as soon as possible! This sounds very alarming!

ETA: I see he's had a lot of very low numbers lately, too, in the 20s and 30s, and some bounces back up into the 500s.

When people have a bleeding stomach ulcer they can vomit up what looks like coffee grounds. It's blood in that case. Maybe this is blood?

Could be. I would take him to the vet as soon as possible, regardless. It definitely sounds like he is unwell and needs veterinary intervention.

Maybe clay litter? Phoebe gets this on her feet when she pees then walks thru it and it sticks to her back and front feet.

Old blood looks similar, like coffee grounds, but if was in the water? I think it would have brown tinged or red tinged around it.

Is there any reason you are not getting a test before you give the insulin? Given some of the very low cycles you have had recently, this makes me very worried for Webster, ideally you want to check BG before giving insulin to make sure it is safe to shoot, you are also holding on to doses a little longer than is safe, when you get a drop into the 30's that's an immediate full reduction for any cat longterm or newly diagnosed, when following TR, ie a 0.25u reduction, taking smaller reductions and not taking them when they are earned can really land you in hot water. I would have probably also thought about taking a full reduction after a drop into the 20's
I know he is seeing some higher numbers now, but that just makes me think he is bouncing of some lows that you are not catching.

Are you using a human meter?

I looked back at previous thread and I see you were trying to skinny the dose as he doesn't hold reductions well, but as @julie & punkin (ga) said in the thread of 3/4 you really don't want to combine both methods, ie holding the dose for 3 drops under 50 (NB a drop under 40 is an immediate reduction), and then only shaving the dose for a reduction, doing both is a little too aggressive and may be why you have been having to deal with numbers in the 20's

I agree with @Squalliesmom regardless of what is in the water it sounds like Webster is not well at all, so a visit to the vets might be advisable.
If he's not feeling well, it might be an idea to check for ketones too.

I want to jump on the "get to the vet" bandwagon. Webster's labs from March were showing ketones at a level that we do not even attempt to manage here. If he's been unwell, there's no way to be certain that he's not courting either DKA or, given his numbers, hypoglycemia.

Glad you may have identified it! However, given Webster' lab results, his hypo numbers, vomiting and his general lack of wellness, I still advocate for a trip to the vet, the sooner the better.

    I agree on three things:
--Webster needs to see a vet ASAP.
--you should be getting a preshot test every single cycle; do not rely on what you "think" you know about him. If he can drop to the 20s at nadir on a dose, he can be there at PS.
--I understand you are worried about DKA, but it is dangerous to allow him to go between 40 and 50 three times or below 40 once and just skinny the dose.

Also....it would be really helpful for us if you could start a new SS. If you need help, I can do this for you and we can do a SS from the new template, transfer this year's numbers to it, and link the old SS. The SS you are using has some corruptions in it thus the new SS template.

    Thanks, Mike.

Mike, I just want to send a little encouragement your way. Sounds like Webster's been having a hard time and you're worried. You've already gotten some good advice about Webster's diabetes, so I'll just second it and send some scritches to him. I hope he's feeling better soon.
