Hello everyone. I am new here. Oreo had a seizure on Thursday. It was scary for me to watch him go through that! He had bitten his tongue so bad that I couldn't do anything to help him, blood was dripping all over!He had to have surgery on it. His blood glucose was 70! At first he was doing 2 units in the mornings, 1 unit at nights. Took him for recheck at the vet, had to increase his dosage to 2 units in mornings, 2 units at night. Now the vet wants me to do 1 unit in the mornings, 1 unit at nights. I take him back for follow up on Thursday. Oh he's taking oral pain medicine for his tongue as well. (He's on Lantus insulin) I feed him Fancy Feast classic canned foods. This has been a month now that he was diagnosed having diabetes. He's a senior kitty around 12-15 years old. Unknown about his age he's a stray kitty, I saved him

Welcome Oreo and his human! He is adorable :cat:! Very sorry you had to witness what sounds like a hypo event. Would you be interested in starting to home test? It's the best tool in our FD tool belt and has saved many kitties here from going hypo. Not saying your Vet is wrong but we see a lot that tend to adjust doses bye whole units. If you read through some of the Lantus "stickies" you will find most of us prefer to recommend dose increases by 0.25U or 0.5U. This is the best way to find a dose that keeps numbers in ideal ranges without dropping them too low :).

If you could setup some signature information, it will be helpful when you post any additional questions on the Main Health Forum: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/editing-your-signature-profile-and-preferences.130340/

And I truly hope you don't have to re-live that event, print this out just in case: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/how-to-treat-hypos-they-can-kill-print-this-out.15887/

If you decide to start home testing we can help with tips, glucometer suggestions, desensitizing, etc. This is the spreadsheet template we use to record our fur babies BG levels:

Oh be still my heart...Oreo! How handsome you are! Another black splotch nosed kitty....awww....reminds me of my Nuisance (non-diabetic I lost to cystitis 3 years ago). There's just something that is special about you silly looking babies.

Welcome Oreo's MamaBean too! We would love to call you by name too. You've already got lots of good info above so I'll leave it at another Welcome and a BIG hug! Look forward to seeing you post in our Feline Health forum.

Hello there, Oreo seems to be doing better. I took him to the vet last Thursday, his blood glucose dropped lower. They are thinking he might be going into remission! Fingers crossed

I think all kitties are adorable but something about your picture of Oreo just makes me automatically smile and go d'awww! Glad he is doing better, recovering well, and possibly heading into remission! :cat:
