? Yum: glucose toxicity/insulin resistance/antioxidants

Teasel made some comments today in a post to apple about glucose toxicity and insulin resistance. I googled it and read something about antioxidant treatments. Do you folks recommend antioxidant treatment, like vitamin E or selenium? I have been so focused on trying to reduce Yum's numbers, I hadn't thought too much about simultaneously minimizing the damage that was taking place. Is there a sticky I should read?

Yum's relapse did occur shortly after I put her on omega fatty acids, when I was worrying about her possible arthritis. I've read omega fatty acids can reduce inflammation which might reduce diabetic tendencies; I've also read about them increasing glucose levels. Any experience there? She's off them now of course.

I hope someone who has knowledge and/or practical answers will reply.
Nothing easier than buying vitamin E capsules and adding its content to a meal.
But what about dosage and frequency?

My vet responded to an email today and said Vetriscience makes an antioxidant product for cats with selenium. I don't see it online. I will probably have the vet order it and then examine the doses on the label. The vet didn't think antioxidant dosing was often used for diabetes, but...

I still hope that someone used adding the vitamin E, though and will share their experiences.
I never had/bought any of Vetriscience products but after looking at their website the word "expensive" popped in my mind..

 

I would offer a word of caution. Look at the dates of the references for the Pet Wiki article that was linked. Not only are the references old, some are from dead webpages. Some of the citations are from conference abstracts. There's no way to know if the conference presentations were submitted to peer review or were later published in a reputable journal. I have not run across anyone here that had given selenium as a supplement.

Several people have given omega-3 as a supplement. Nordic Naturals makes a high quality fish oil that is in a pet based bottle that makes dosing easy. Please be aware, though, that many cats are allergic to or have a sensitivity to fish. @Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) has found an omega-3 supplement that is not fish based.

I don't recall either finding or giving an omega-3 supplement. Sorry! The only supplement that Rusty takes is L-lysine (1/8th teasp. twice a day, in his food). He also gets a monthly vitamin B-12 shot at the vet.

 

Whole Foods always has algae-based omega fatty acids for people. I was sharing that with my cats until Yum relapsed.

 

@Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) - I'm obviously not remembering correctly. I thought it was Rusty where you'd tried a fish oil supplement and he had an allergic reaction. Sorry!

 

Is Fish oil the same as omega-3? I thought the question was about omega-3 and didn't realize that they are one and the same! So yes, I did try fish oil on Rusty, and yes, he did have an allergic reaction to it. (he's allergic to fish). Sorry for the confusion. It was a long time ago! In any event, I didn't find a substitute for whatever it was. I simply stopped giving the fish oil.
