Hi!!! I'm Jennifer, and I'm the proud mama of Mufasa. A beautiful tan & cream colored striped baby boy. Well, he's 11 years old as of last week. But he'll always be my baby. November 2016 he was diagnosed with diabetes. Blood glucose clocking in at 438, after not eating for 2 days & getting sick all over. Mufasa has always been a big guy and seemed healthy, weighing around 17-19lbs throughout his adult life. The day he got sick, it started with throwing up and diarrhea. Then I noticed he urinated on the rubber mat outside his litter box, which I remember is a sign of a UTI. The next day was a day full of missing the litter box, throwing up, and not wanting to even eat his favorite thing of all, kitty treats. I made an appointment for the next day. That was when he was diagnosed with diabetes and a minor UTI. Antibiotics were sent home with us and the doctor talked to me about managing his diet, making sure he loses some weight, and insulin. I asked what if I got him to eating healthier and he loses some weight. She said that it would take a long time for him to get better and for his glucose to drop, but sure. Sometimes us humans are in denial and I thought with the proper diet and a more active lifestyle, it would make him better. Well, he got sick back in June this year, just throwing up. I took him back in and he was diagnosed with an ear infection (more antibiotics) and his sugar was 483 and the doctor insisted we start thinking about insulin and monitoring his sugar and ketones. I was still being stubborn thinking that his sugar was just high from the infection. Fast forward to yesterday. He wasn't really sick, the usual occassional diarrhea but he was acting distant. We went away for a night and I thought that was why he was mad. So I dismissed it. Then when I got home from work, he followed me to the basement to do laundry and when it was time to go back upstairs, I heard him crying from the storage closet. When I opened the door, he was urinating. I thought maybe he was acting out because we were gone. I took him upstairs to his litter box and he wouldn't stay in it. So I cleaned it out. While I was doing that, he snuck behind a table and started squatting. I caught him in time and the napkin I used to clean up was pink. I could only guess it was blood from his urine. I cried, because I felt guilty for being stupid. My husband insisted I take him in and get him checked out and get him on insulin. After 3 hours in the vet Urgent Care, he was diagnosed with another UTI, this time it was severe and the sugar level is at 489. More antibiotics and a script for insulin and needles. I am not looking forward to poking my baby, but if this is going to make him better, I have to do it. So, now I shop for good affordable monitoring equipment and Novolin with U-40 Syringes.

    Thank you for listening.

Syringes.... Get a few weeks worth at your vet to hold you over, order them from Adwdiabetes.com. Your vet should have insulin in stock. Novalin is cheap.

The rest... Go to Walmart and get

    Relion micro or confirm meter
    Box of 28 gauge lancets
Box of 100 extra test strips
    Neosporin ointment with pain relief
Ketone testing strips (ketones are potentially deadly and with his numbers so high for so long it's a real strong possibly)
    Cotton rounds
Fancy feast classic or Friskies pate foods

Your vet dropped the ball not starting him on insulin MONTHS ago knowing how dangerous untreated diabetes is.

Thanks!!! I will get everything going!! He is feeling a lot better. He looked so miserable when he was trying to go potty. Like any mother, I just wanted to take his pain from him. I'd rather go through it than see his face in such pain when going.

This morning was a good morning. Back to his normal self, waking us up at 2am for food. LOL That is his normal routine.

One more question, he's been on Antibiotics 3 times in less than a year. Won't that affect his health as well?

With that many antibiotics you may want to give him a probiotic to replace the good bacteria.... Like a person eating yogurt when on antibiotics.
