Just found out my Abby may have diabetes and I am scared to death. She is currently at the vet overnight and being started on insulin, if she perks up, then the vet says we know her condition is diabetes, if not there maybe an underlying problem. Any comforting thoughts?? I have cried all day

What symptoms was she showing? What was her blood glucose reading at the vet clinic?

If she is diabetic, you're in the right place. We can help you learn everything you need to know to get your kitty feeling better. :)

I cried non stop the first day. It's normal. I will tell you in a few days it all becomes routine. We are here for you. It's not as scary as you think. It is definitely not a death sentence.

Many cats live long healthy lives on insulin.... It is also quite common for cats tested at home where the dose can be monitored closely to go into remission!

    Welcome Rhonda and Abby!
If it is diabetes, this is the best place to be (in my opinion) :). Come on over to Main Health so more eyes can chime in :bighug:

Thank you, here is the story. I took her in for her yearly shots and the vet gave her a steroid shot for a skin allergy where she had started pulling her hair out that was a week ago. (Steroid and Diabetes do not go together well) Abby just wasn't herself , she just had no energy, drank a lot of water (big clue), so I carried her back to the vet, they did blood work and her glucose was 399. So from there she is being started on insulin (where I have told she has perked up) and I will have to give her 2 shots a day and help her loose weight (she is currently 15 lbs). I will keep you posted and I am sure I will need advise from all of you!!! thanks

Do you think you would be willing to learn how to home test? It's the best way to keep your cat safe and find out if the dose is ideal. I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC.

Not to mention it's cheaper and more accurate than curves done at the vets office.

I don't know but I will find out all that information when I pick Abby up Thursday at the vet (they want to keep her Wed to start her on insulin to see and monitor). I will certainly let you know. It's a relief to find others who have cats with Diabetes. thanks

Just wanted to give an update on Abby. The vet called and said she is not responding to insulin and her blood sugar is not coming down, her body temp is dropping and they have her on warming blankets. The vet said she gave her an injectable antibiotic and really does not know what is going on with her but is going to monitor and run tests. Im really scared I'm going to lose my baby, so sad.

I'm sorry you're going through this with your baby. Crossing fingers that the vet will figure it out. :bighug:

:bighug::bighug::bighug: I'm so sorry, I will be watching here for updates and praying for her. I wonder if she took a reaction to the steroid shot or something.

That's what I was thinking. This is odd and not typical of diabetes. :( :(

I'm not overly surprised the bg isn't going down Janet, the stress at the vets would likely be keeping that high. I'm sure they will have tested for keytones and pancreatitis etc.. but that bit seems weird to me, she was perking up then she wasn't.. strange.

Could be a bad reaction to steroids or vaccines. Ugh i sure hope not. She said they have an injectable antibiotics.... Some have bad reactions to that As well... Unless that was given after these symptoms.

The way I took it was that she had the steroid, and shots a week ago, do steroids stay in the system that long? It could well have been the trigger for the diabetes- I won't allow the vet to give steroids to my horse as they (can) cause laminitis (inflammation of the nerves in the feet). Although if it were absolutely necessary (life or death or no other treatment I would!)

Then they brought her in to give her the insulin, again not sure why that was necessary? Except to do a curve (and we all know how much I believe that doesn't work). And while she was there for that she took a turn for the worse. So gave her the antibiotic..

My worry here is that the vets look at the (stress induced) high numbers and gave more insulin, creating a bounce and then gave more..

Update on Abby, the vet called and said it would be a good idea to come say by goodbyes just in case she doesn't make it through the day/night. It is hard to say goodbye, my heart feels like its in a million pieces.

How does she go from skin allergy to deaths door in a week??

Did she have multiple vaccines too? I don't trust them. My friends dog had a bad vaccine went anemic and died a week later at just 4 years old. Perfectly healthy before.

I'm sorry you and your cat are going through this.
Ask the vet to send you the lab results. There are a number of people here who are good at interpreting them. It's worth a try.

Hey guys, i just wanted to give another update on Abby, yesterday was a tough day for this kitty mom. My vet , who I love and is wonderful, called last night and said that Abby responded to the insulin and her level was down to 196 and her body temp is now at 96 from 91 yesterday. She is on the right path, its now 10am and I am waiting for another update and I am praying this is good and my baby is going to be fine. My vet has ran test, checked this, checked that, all diagnostics and just couldn't figure out why Abby's temp was dropping, so maybe the 2 antibiotics she gave yesterday has done the trick. Thank you all for your kind words and I hope to give more good news.
