? Zeke - 8/4 - Switched from Novolin to Lantus this morning

I started him at 2u. We were already having to go back lower on dosing on the Novolin because he was getting Blacks at 3u, so felt more comfortable with the 2u for starting out since this does seem to affect longer out then the Novolin.

Reading through the stickies, hold this dose for 5 days, or since he isn't new to insulin adjust after 3 days (6 cycles)?

 

Hold for 5-7 days, to build the depot, unless the numbers tell you otherwise.

Did a ketone test earlier, negative.

His AMPS was 313, +3 is 332 so starting out pretty flat for his first day.

 

His +6 was 414, but not too surprised since the depot is just now getting started. Also, soon as I did his +6, landlord came with our stove (finally after going on 2 months!). That isn't done, so one of his maintenance guys should be here soon to finish replacing the stove. Depending on when he finally gets here and that gets done, might just skip the +9 since good chance it is going to be affected by stress. We did whisk him off to another room before the landlord came in to help reduce the stress on him though, he really really hates strangers in the house.

 

Sounds like you got the hang of Lantus already, it took me forever to understand that one correctly

 

I have read so much on this making sure I have a decent understanding. Really had no clue when we started Novolin so wanted to make sure we got a good start with this. Right now just hoping we don't go too high.

 

I tried to also, think cause I read everything when he was first diagnosed I was just to stressed, emotional to take it in. I am usually really good at understanding stuff, but I felt so sad, afraid, and at that time though it was my fault for letting him be overweight. The anxiety remained, cause his numbers were just not budging for so long, until I looked into with help here high dos conditions. Which of course brought another level of researching and understanding those conditions .... thank goodness for this place

 

Lantus (and Levemir) develops your patience. Or is that - tests your patience. Most often, the first several cycles are rather boring. But every once in a while, the cat factor creeps in.

 

His +11 is 263. Lower then I expected honestly. Probably just Zeke being Zeke lol

His PMPS is 265 so numbers are doing good. So happy they aren't going high. The +6 got me worried they were going that way.

 

For me, it was more of a relief when we got the diagnosis. Zeke is a large cat, so even though 18 pounds is big, he wasn't really that much overweight. He probably would be good at about 15-18 pounds. When he got sick, the main symptom we seen was the weight loss, and it was fast. He felt like a skeleton with skin he was so under weight. And it happened in only 1 1/2 weeks. I was so worried that he was sick with something bad and that we could loose him. Zeke is my daughters baby, she has issues with anxiety and self harm, so when we found Zeke you could say that they rescued each other. I have many family members who have diabetes and my mother has had a dog with it, so the diagnosis of diabetes was a relief because we could easily take care of that. The main stressor has been in getting him where he is getting better numbers. It really worries me the longer he keeps the high ones. I can definitely say I have been having to learn some patience with this though. So many things you can just enter data into a formula and get that magical dose and I am learning that is far from the case with diabetes.
