Hi everyone. I am getting over the shock of having both of my 13 year old feline family members diagnosed with diabetes. Larry's glucose was in the mid-300's and Willie's was way high at 550. The feline cat vet has them started this week on Lantus 1 ml twice a day and then have a recheck this coming Thursday. I read the new spreadsheet on cat food, and I it makes me angry about how many in the cat food industry are selling us inferior products. I thought I was giving "my boys" high quality cat food!! Do most of you make your own cat food now or purchase the canned? I was thinking about purchasing the Tiki brand since it appears low carb, and wondering if anyone has used it? I am interested in what you are feeding your cats.... and THANK YOU in advance!

Tiki is fine.... Some make their own food, most feed fancy feast classic or Friskies pate. Wow two at the same time! Are they littermates? Are you planning on testing at home?

Welcome! Double whammy...wow. I tried a few of the Tiki foods, but my girls would not eat it.

Be sure to post your questions on the Main Health Forum. They will get more attention there since this is a welcome forum.

Tiki is good food. My kids do not like the texture though. I fed Proplan beef and carrots pate, home cooked, and used Sheba perfect portion. He didn't have a preference, it depended on who was feeding and when.

Thank you for your suggestions! They aren't litter mates which makes it really suprising that they both developed it. My feline vet was very suprised also. Thanks for the food suggestions. I am glad there are reasonably priced canned foods available that are low carb, especially since one bottle of 100 ml Lantus cost $279 at Walgreens!!! With 2 cats, as you can imagine, I am really hoping they go into remission because of the expense. However, I LOVE them so much that I will do what I need to do! :)

Woodsywife has a great suggestion. Through that Canadian pharmacy you can get 5 3ml lantus pens for $150.... That may last you over 6 months with two cats (a years worth if 1 cat).

Hey there and what a shock to get a double whammy!

I started off with FF Classics when Bubba was first DX. Then switched to Nature's Instinct and have since gone raw chicken and turkey I get from a local butcher that no antibiotics or hormones or any additives given. It is actually cheaper feeding raw and adding the EZ Complete supplements necessary when feeding raw ground food.

I would try the supply closet for Lantus Solor Star pens and set of 5. I have received two shipments from Alan and he is very nice to work with and his prices are about the same as Mark's Pharm in CA and come quicker.

Ask your vet for a presciption for the Lantus pens instead of a vial. The insulin in the vial will become ineffective long before you can use it all. If you are hometesting, you may start to see your numbers start gradually increasing in about 2 1/2 - 3 months as the insulin starts to become ineffective. The pens are used like small vials. But because they are in smaller containers, you should be able to use almost every drop. A package of pens could last 6 - 9 months.

You must mean 1 unit of Lantus twice daily, not 1 ml. Insulin is dosed in units, not ml. For Lantus, there are 100 units in one ml. 1 ml of Lantus (100 units) would kill most cats
