Hello! My sweet, shy, twelve-year-old Felix was diagnosed with diabetes in May 2017 when he was admitted to the emergency clinic with a DKA incident.

He's lived with us for about three years, and he was always quite overweight. Last year, he was on Hill's r/d and went from 17 pounds to about 11--which I thought was good news, until I stopped giving him the reducing diet and he continued to lose. By March 2017, I realized he was drinking more, but I'd just lost a little old lady cat to kidney disease in February (and have had several others with that over the years), and I thought that was probably what was going on. By May, I was planning to get him in for a checkup in the next week or so, when he suddenly had a health crisis that turned out to be DKA, and he spent five days in the hospital.

He's improved steadily through the summer on slowly increasing insulin amounts, and the last few weeks he's seemed in remarkably good condition physically and emotionally (going in for fructosamine tests every three weeks had been hard on him!). His vet doesn't seem too thrilled about home testing; he's more interested in how well he's looking and acting. But I wanted to learn to home test so I could do curves for the doctor so that Felix wouldn't have to go in so often. I've been testing ad hoc since July, but I haven't really known how to interpret the results, except to see that he's not as well-regulated as his improved condition suggests. His glucose is usually in the 300s and 400s.

This weekend I was getting a curve because I'd bumped up his insulin to 6.5 units from 6 units a few days before. I got a surprise when I did the AMPS and he was near 100 and headed down fast ... I think I'll continue this in the Lantus forum....

Anyway, hello from Felix and me!
