? Any tips for getting eye drops in Beenie's eyes?

Beenie had her yearly wellness exam today and she needs eye drops to help clear up some residual inflammation or infection from an earlier upper respiratory infection.

Any tips on how to get eye drops in a cats eyes?

I can't even get eye drops in my own eyes without blinking like crazy

 

If you google 'how to put eye drops in a cat's eye' or something similar, several videos will come up.

I would suggest wrapping her taco (burrito) style, and once she is wrapped with one hand you open her eye (this is important because she'll close her eye as soon as she sees the drop and it would not go in) and with the other you hold the bottle and squeeze it so that the drop falls real fast

 

Welding gloves?

Long explanation. It may be covered in a video. I've never looked. My DH calls this the 'Apocalypse Now' approach.

Sit on the floor with the cat wedged between your knees/thighs facing outward. (Important because any attack (teeth and/or claws are directed away from you.) Put bottle in opposite hand – i.e. if it is the cat's right eye, hold the bottle in your left hand. Bring hand holding the bottle in from behind the cat's head. The cat will look up. Grab the cat's head with your other hand (on the side of the affected eye), with thumb at base of jaw, index finder around the whiskers above the eye, remainder of fingers below the eye.

If the cat keeps its eye opened, lucky you, instil the drop.

If the cat closes its eye, you can open it by spreading your index finger (above) and your middle finger (below) the eye.

It's late night, and I'm very tired. The above might make any sense at all. I hope it does. You don't want to know how many times I placed my fingers on the side of my head so that I could describe the process accurately. Note to self: remember to close the curtains at night before making weird faces with my fingers for anyone walking by outside can see.

 

It is not as hard as it sounds using the burrito style you can have both your hands free one to open the eye the other to get the drop (don't think that because her eyes are open she will keep them that way as soon as the drop fells she will close them before the drop can go in.

In my case I use my left hand (I'm right handed) to hold the eye open with my thumb and index and my right hand for the bottle no matter what eye it is

With time they become used and you won't need the burrito style I just hold my civie's eye where ever she is and let the drop fall

Makes perfect sense and similar to what I saw on a youtube video. I was too groggy this morning so she didn't get her drops. Tonight its on the pet sitter, she did it last night no problem (she's a vet tech). So I will try again tomorrow this way then burrito style
