Just found out this week one of my Maine Coons, Ozzy has diabetes. Shock ! Started him on 2 units of Humulin twice a day, changed his food and got a glucometer to keep an eye on his BGs. I am going to do everything I can to help him live a long, healthy, happy life. We love him dearly, he is just the sweetest gentle giant. Thank you all for any help and advice. Joyce

    What specific type of Humulin?

Humulin is Eli Lilly's trade name for a family of Recombinant DNA origin human insulins. They include N (sometimes called NPH), and R (very fast actions) and mixture of the two. Only N/NPH is OK, but not that good, for cats.

Coral, the red tabby Maine Coon was diagnosed with diabetes in June 2015 and went in to remission in September 2015. She is now going into her third year of being diet controlled. You have a great attitude and it will serve you well. This board is a extremely helpful in guiding you through what you need to know. One thing that helped me a lot was getting a notebook and copying the different protocols in treating diabetes, setting up a monitoring sheet on Google, how to handle hypos, food recommendations and medications. Take it slow, start posting and know that you will be supported. Kathe

If you would like to read my story, go into my avatar and then go into information under my account. You should find my journey with Coral over the three months of treating her diabetes under the title, "Where's Kathe". Hope you are encouraged. Kathe

Larry - Where should MomCatX4 be posting since she is administrating Humulin? Coral was on Lantus and that is where I posted. Most helpful so I can follow to encourage. Thanks for weighing in, you were most helpful to me too. :) Kathe

Humulin N, I just contacted a new vet, asked lots of questions (they seem very skilled with diabetes) and have an appt for Monday. She said they will switch him to Vetsulin

Vetsulin really is not much better than N. I would go for either the pet insulin ProZinc or the human insulins Lantus or Levemir. You can get the Lantus/Levemir from Canada for a lot less than USA.

You will need a prescription from your vet
