My kitty has recently started to get really frustrated with testing. He now bats my hand out of the way. I feel like his ears are sore. Has anyone tried testing in the lip? My vet suggested it. She said the ears are sensitive. I've never heard this before and I am a bit scared to try it.

If you prick the very edge of the ear it shouldn't be sensitive.... Just if you hit the vein.

Omg wouldn’t that hurt them way more than ear? Angel purs through the pokes now and we check her ALOT. you just have to get it right and they really don’t feel it. I use the smallest gauge lancets too.

Have you tried any Neosporin ointment with pain relief? I didn't start off using it, but I noticed Lou would get more irritated during checks and finally wondered if his ears were sore. I will put it on his ears at night and leave on overnight a couple few nights a week. I was shocked at how quickly his irritability would go away after I started using this. Might be worth a try.

OMG!! Never try to poke a cat in the lip!! That's as bad as those vets that say you should clip a nail too short to make it bleed!

That's how a lot of dogs are tested, but never cats......that's a good way to get a really bad bite and cat bites are nothing to fool with.

Try the Neosporin with pain relief ointment...it really can help......or try using the paw pad

I agree with China... CC is easy going, but if I ever poked her in the lip I think I would loose a hand!

You're aiming for a very very small target and you've got something sharp in your hands near his nose and eyes. The picture of the ear JanetNJ posted above; if you're using a computer you can right click on it and save it to your pictures for future reference. Some people find it helpful to warm the ear, I just rub it for a minute first. You can try a thinner lancet, the higher the number the thinner it is. Neosporin will help. Cats will remember pain so for us it's a big production of approaching him slowly, talking to him, the usual crazy cat stuff. I've been doing this a long time and things still go wrong.

Thanks everyone. I do use the Neosporin. I will try to warm it better and see what happens.

Try poking while she's distracted with a treat
