I'm glad you found this site... I think you'll find a lot of helpful information and caring people.

It's not a death sentence and very treatable. We are here for you if you have any questions.

Thank you very much! Here's her history: She has a wound on her foot that will not heal, this is the 2nd time this year (and 3rd time total) the wound has appeared. I have been taking her to the vet for that issue and the vet suggested that we do blood work since the wound appears on the same paw each time. In fact the vet recommends amputation of her right leg and the blood work is a prerequisite. I had accepted the fact that we would have a 3-legged cat and was prepared to go forth with the surgery. Had the blood work done last Wed. & got the results on Friday. The blood work showed her glucose level was 418 and her urine glucose was 3. The vet said 64-170 is the normal range for blood glucose and should be zero in the urine. She of course is stressed by the wound, 2x a day cleaning/soakings, the cone of shame etc. The vet said that stress would not have made the glucose rise to that level. We have an appointment tomorrow to get the diabetes intro from the vet, so this is all very, very new to us.

So sorry about the diagnosis. We are here for you. How bad is this wound that he feels an amputation is needed? Does he feel it's cancerous?

The wound is bad, and yes the Vet thinks it could be cancerous, but we haven't done a biopsy. Because of the high glucose/diabetes diagnosis, the vet want to get that under control before any surgery. I had the thought that perhaps the wound is not healing because she has diabetes. The wound is not a bite from any other animal, insect or snake. It started out like a small pimple and just gets bigger. She's had antibiotic shots during all instances of the wound appearing.

Been MIA for a few months & wanted to follow up on Stinky's progress. Her foot is completely healed and she's been on Pro Zinc PZI insulin, U-40, 1 unit BID since Oct. 5th, 2017. Almost done with the 10ml vial & took her to the vet for a suggested fructosamine blood test. Vet called today and said she's doing great & had a reading of 502. Vet said 500-614 is the range & if the results had been over 614 then the insulin amount would need to be increased. **However perhaps I need to call the vet back, because that range is totally different from what I've read here in the forums & on line** I struggle with the home testing though; so that's my next goal to conquer. I'm hoping to start populating the spreadsheet once we get that issue resolved.

I'm glad to hear that her foot healed. 502 is still pretty high on the fructosamine. The best way to manage this is with home testing. It will tell you what is really going on with Stinky's glucose levels and will enable you to make the most accurate dosing decisions possible. It gets so much easier once you start doing it.

These ranges are from this site (which indicates the original source reference): http://www.vetsulin.com/vet/Cats_Monitoring_Glycated.aspx
    Cats Fructosamine values (µmol/L)
    Normal non-diabetic cats 190–365
    Newly diagnosed diabetic cats 350–730
    Regulated diabetic cats:
    Excellent control 350–400
    Good control 400–450
    Fair control 450–500
    Poor control >500
    Prolonged hypoglycemia <300
