I am part of a group of cat enthusiasts that want to learn more about how certain genetic variants can compensate for harmful mutations. Our company is called Basepaws.

Among other hereditary diseases we are looking for participants with feline diabetes. We are providing the DNA testing for free for eligible participants.

The DNA kit is non-invasive, the testing is free, we cover the return shipping. Please read more here https://www.basepaws.com/blog/international-cat-day?utm_source=felinediabetes

I'm here to answer additional questions.

Your website doesn't mention feline diabetes as being a "qualifying category" for the free kit

Thanks for your attention! I'm sorry for that, it's a technical error.

We are updating the post right now.

As long as you're updating, in your FAQ, you have the kit at $99 instead of the $95 listed as the price on the order form

Do I get a free kit for "editorial fees"?....LOL

I thought it read free for the following conditions.......xyz conditions listed.

They are trying to up their gene pool for those diseases.

At least that's what I got from it.

    LOL
We'd love to give out kits for THAT rather than for diseases.
The stories that people share are heartbreaking.

You accept international samples on paid kit orders and there is an additional cost for shipping. Are free kits available to those of us outside the US? Would shipping still need to be paid and if so how would that be handled?

What sort of feedback would people who send samples be given. Obviously everyone on this forum has been dealing with diabetes and often other co-morbid diseases as well. What would the tests be able to add to our knowledge of our kitties?

Thanks for your interest. This is a research program, it means that we are looking for genetics markers that can be associated with feline diabetes. We hope to provide insights that are currently unavailable in the future. In terms of immediate value, we can provide information on breed, wild cat relationships, and we are working on providing information on carrier status.

Larry, we hope you'll post here about your experience when you get the kit, and when you get the results! Many of us are interesting in learning more about this.

I got my kit today. I'm not a big fan of the hair collection process. Seems a bit harsh.

Badger did not really seem to notice when I pulled the tape away

Too late for change now but wouldn't a moth swab be more efficient?

There website includes this in the FAQ:
    How does this work?
Simple! After you receive your kit, collect hair from your cat using the adhesives provided (and via a secondary buccal swab sample, just to be 100% sure).

My kit did not include and swabs nor any instructions for taking a buccal swab

The site does not say how many base pair sequences they examine/compare. I'm not being nasty, this is a great idea that could help future generations, educate vets and help the next 20 cats in my life. But I have seen some of the human oriented companies tank and the information they gathered is lost forever due to overly restrictive privacy laws. @Irina Morgunova Can you elaborate on this? New vaccines, new foods and supplements etc. I remember when the word Taurine was met with a blank stare so I want to help.

I only got the tape too. Hopefully Chuck won't notice the tape with enough treats.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is listed as one of the diseases they're interested in

Thanks Chris. It was absolutely devastating to us knowing that our babies would someday just drop dead in a 24 hour period. The day may come when testing and early detection prevents this heartbreak. Another form of Cardiomyopathy that takes humans is literally "Broken heart syndrome". My wife's aunt died and 2 months later her husband died, a perfect example of myth becoming reality.
