Thank you for the link - I just submitted the survey.
Hopefully, it will help educating the veterinarian community as well because some vet's advises I read about here are, to put plainly, terrifying.

This felt surprisingly awesome to complete... perhaps because it gave me a voice (even if anonymous) and I hope it helps. :)

Oh, Dickson, I did not even get to the "guessing" phase..
The recent "gems from the vets" I referred to were:
One suggested a lip as a possible BG testing site;
The other one - to cut cat's nail so short so it bleeds and to obtain the sample this way...:mad:

We all know that cat's nails are actually the phalanges, not human like nails..right? Clipping one off is an act of cruelty, imho.

Made me think of those WWII photos of some individuals in full MD regalia, like the white robes, a stethoscope around the neck, an intelligent face, etc., who were photographed at Auschwitz...

But we all know know now they were there not to heal, were they?

Posting mostly to bump, so : bump!

Done. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

The surveyors might regret providing all that space for the open-ended questions, though! :p

I used to work across the street from an SPCA, spent lots of lunchtime there and even got a male Abyssinian for $20. No one wanted him. An act of cruelty? The local paper caught them using a vacuum chamber when they overflowed. The 1980's, not the 1780's. Disgusting.

I still have the PDF file, not from the newspaper but the shelter itself explaining it's use. One of the lines listed as a positive says "Safety to personnel, environment." It still had to be cleaned out, what safety did those people get? What was anyone thinking?

WHAT? That's insane!! Although, I was very disappointed in my vet today who recommended keeping Darwin on 1u/day of insulin to ensure he "stays in remission" uhhh.....
I am hoping he'll have a different tune when I bring in my spreadsheets and research to show him how it CAN and SHOULD be done! :woot::rolleyes::smuggrin:

Some people cannot be argued with. There's a culture in medicine where you "know" you're smarter than everyone else from the first day of med school and it only gets worse because it's perpetuated daily by group think, hero worship and the very people educating you. Some, not all, think they're mental movie stars. After minor day surgery I had a bit of swelling and was sent to an ER. The doctor mumbled something about emergency surgery so I asked him to repeat/clarify that and asked why I didn't have a fever if I had a raging intestinal infection. He got red in the face and wouldn't talk to me so my wife grabbed my hand and said "See ya later". There was no infection. My swelling was noted as 30 cm when they should have said 30mm and that's on my forever medical record. Just so stupid.

That's scary! I notoriously despise going to the doctor myself for this reason (I'd rather see my vets! LOL).

Thankfully, my boss is not like that. His problem is that he gets stuck in his ways, and scared to try anything new. Once he does though, it's like he can't shut up about it :p:joyful: - I really enjoy saying "I told you so" to him LOL. I am a big proponent of continuing education, and have brought a lot of new things (and better) things to the clinic over the last few years, and we have made tremendous strides, but we can always do things better, I believe. Change is hard, but when it's for the better - it's worth the struggle. He'll get there when he sees that it's worked.

Our vet is halfway to the local ER so sometimes I think I'd be better off there. I just have issues with authority figures who know what's best for all of us (pass me a tissue). You shouldn't be labeled a social misfit for asking a legitimate question.

Well that's strange. Our Elmo was the smartest cat I've ever had and if he stood on his tippy-toes he could look in the bathroom sink. My first shorthair in 30 years; picked a new cat at the shelter, forgot my wallet and when I came back he said "No, pick me!" Hi other Elmo.

It really makes me sad how misinformed so many vets are about FD. It felt good to have a place to say that, and to sing the praises of this message board!!

    Submitted my survey.

I said something to this effect to one of our vets just the other day and she burst out laughing as if what I'd said was so funny and wacky. I was surprised, because I would've thought they heard that a lot.
