    Hello!

My name is Carol and my cat Felix was diagnosed with diabetes in September. I'm still trying to get used to all of this. This website has been my go to and is very helpful!

    Hello!
Do you do your own curves? I don't feel comfortable at this point. Still a lot to learn.

Hiya Carol! I do regular daily testing and curves myself. Basically on curve days you test every 2 hours for the 12-hour cycle. It will be a breeze once you get comfortable with home testing. Don't be afraid to ask any questions you have over in the Main Health forum and we'll be here to help you along the way. Just remember it's a marathon, not a sprint, so you don't need to know absolutely everything right this second. :cat:

Hi Carol, I switched from pro zinc because my cat has a condition called acromegaly, a tumor on his pituitary that causes him to need more insulin than most cats. The Levemir I use is a longer lasting insulin recommended for cats with that problem.
The other supplements in my signature are coq10 for heart health, Zobaline which is methyl B12 for neuropathy and dmannose to prevent UTI’s.

When do you do daily checks? And how often do you do curves? What are you looking for when you do curves?

I generally test 3 - 5 times per day. I always test prior to each insulin shot to make sure the dose will be safe. Then I test during the cycle usually at least once during the insulin's peak time of working (For Vetsulin it's usually 4-6 hours after the dose, but this will depend on the insulin you are using). At night I'll catch a glucose check before I go to bed. Basically you're checking during the cycle to see how the insulin dose is working on your kitty (is the dose bringing him too low or not low enough?). Curve timeframes depend... some people do them weekly. I've started just doing mini curves (say I test at +4, +6, and +8 one day, then +3, +5, and +7 another day). There is no hard and fast rule for testing except getting your preshot tests in. Since I work longer days, most of my mid-cycle testing happens on my days off.

No you need to test before they eat to know if it’s safe to give insulin. Then feed and give shot.
