I'm new here with my furbaby Junior who is currently on Prozinc. He had 2 hypos in a 24 period (10-19/20). The last dose the vet had him on was 8units 2times a day. He started going doing poorly and they said to just reduce by 1unit. I wasn't happy with that answer so I found this site and thank god I did cause it saved his life! With the help of you kind folks he has pulled through and had me restart him on .5 unit Friday. He was in rough shape over the weekend but today he has been more himself, not perfect but better. This is what I had posted alittle bit ago in the main forum.

I've got Junior's spreadsheet up and current. He is finally starting to act like himself again, thank goodness! It's been a long weekend and thanks to all of you that helped us through it I could give you a big ole hug. THANK YOU!!! With that being said his numbers are running high but I've noticed today that they are staying closer together and not bouncing way up or down, is that a good thing? He's still on a .5 unit of Prozinc 2x a day and I'm wondering if I should take it to a full unit now that we are doing better but are in the higher numbers. Thanks for the advice.

Hi and welcome! You've had quite the introduction to feline diabetes, huh?! I gasped when I read the part about being on eight units when Junior was just diagnosed less than a month ago! We do occasionally have kitties that get that high, but it's usually a much slower journey!

Have you had a chance to read the stickies at the top of the Prozinc forum? In general increases are 0.25 units at a time, and then you can increase every three to six cycles depending on the numbers you're seeing and how much you can monitor.

Are you using the u40 syringes from the vet that just have the full unit marks? Do you think you can eyeball a 0.75u dose? It's not that important to be exactly 0.75u - it's more important that you can be consistent for a few days.

Hi and thank you. Yes I have. LOL. I'm getting around to reading all the post. I was told in my other post possibly .5 units but didn't use Prozinc and suggested I come over here to get advice from more knowledgeable users. Yes I have the red cap syringes and I'm waiting on the half unit ones someone suggested for me to get. Hopefully they'll be here Thursday or Friday. Someone had mentioned yesterday about waiting like 3 cycles before changing the dose also.

You're very welcome! I don't spend much time over here since I've never used ProZinc, but when I send someone here, I like to make sure someone has welcomed them and is keeping their eyes on them!

They don't do it as much here in the ProZinc forum, but in the Lantus forum, we always put the link to our prior post into the body of a new one so it's easy to go back and read what's been going on

If you feel like you can do the 0.75, that would be the next step. If you are more comfortable going to one unit, and you can get some mid-cycle tests in, it would be okay to go to one unit. His numbers right now look like he'll be okay either way, it's always just good to keep an eye on any cycle when you change the dose. The slower dose changes help to minimize bouncing and keep things a little more stable.

@Chris & China, thank you so much for linking the old threads! That helps to see a little of the recent history.

Thank you for getting back with me since its time to shoot again. I will try to eyeball the .75 the best I can. I try to do the +2 every time and I usually try for one every 3-4 hours during the night too, just for my peace of mind till I feel comfortable with him not getting sick on me again.

That's what we're all here for!! We were all new once and someone helped us learn the ropes.....Now we just "pay it forward"!!

Not everyone is comfortable giving dose advice, but sometimes the words someone needs to hear the most are "we were where you were not long ago and we did it" and "I understand how you feel"

Happy to help out...it's hard to believe Junior was on 8U just a week ago!! I'm glad Susan has you to help her out now since I don't have enough experience with ProZinc to feel too comfortable giving dose advice.

I do think with him getting into 400's that she could probably go with the 1U dose, especially with how much she's able to test, but I'll definitely defer to you guys that have more experience than I do

Don't sweat it.....You're not the first and you won't be the last to do a furshot!!

    We've all done them!!

Just never re-shoot, no matter how sure you are about it....you never know exactly how much actually got in....and we've seen so many times when someone was sure they did a furshot and the cat earned a reduction in dose!

I'm the queen of fur shots around here since my cat is so wiggly. It's frustrating, but try not to worry about it.

It does look like you got a 100 point drop though, so maybe he got at least some of the insulin? Having skimmed through your threads a bit now, I do agree with Chris that shooting one unit would probably be better at this point, so maybe aim for that at your next shot and we'll see how it goes.

Hi Suzzel and Junior! Welcome to our little corner of the forum. We're a small but friendly group. :)

I agree that you can probably go ahead and up to 1 unit. When in higher numbers you can go up by 0.5...it's lower numbers that need smaller increases.

I've skimmed your past posts and WOW! I can't tell you the word I said when I saw the 8 units...definitely not ladylike! :p

Please ask any questions you have....we're happy to help!!!
