    Hello from Arizona---
Joe my dear Tuxedo has been to the vet more than I can tell you---however, the latest is he is on Purina DM and is losing weight - 2-3 pounds (he was a steady 11 pounds) - he is 16 and alert, but rather lethargic and now has low appetite. He really isn't diabetic, since going on Purina DM canned food. - but that food has no carbs, and of course they will lose weight. HELP! Thank YOU all!

So your cat is diabetic but diet controlled? That's great! Seems weird to me then that he's still losing weight. Ate you very sure his numbers are in normal range? Are you home testing? What have his numbers been the last few days? Was he ever on insulin? How many cans a day does he eat?

I have a suspicion that the diabetes may not be as diet controlled as you think. The only way to know is if you test him.

I agree with Janet, you should check Joe’s blood glucose to be sure he is diet controlled. I find many vets think what is actually high numbers are ok. I’d also get some ketone test strips and check for ketones. It’s true the canned DM is low carb, but it has as many carbs as what I feed my cats and they’re fat and happy, so something is going on with Joe. Please come to the Main Health Forum and tell us more. If you’re not testing, we can help you learn how.

Thank you for your response. He sees the vet this morning. He has been on diet controlled - Canned Purina DM - was eating a can a day...his levels went from 300 to 80----TERRIFIC right? and has been tested and still normal....diet did the trick...

You are one of the lucky few. :). I'm sure the vet will see about other reasons why. Best wishes.
