HELP! My diabetes cat is peeing outside the litter box. Tested him for UTI and it was negative. Vet thinks it's behavioral. He has never done this prior to being diagnosed. I bought Cat Attract litter, Icky Poo , Cat Attract powder. Nothing seems to be working! I have to keep absorbent pads all over my house. Not sure how much more I can take. Vet suggested perhaps Prozac. Told her to write an RX for me too! Any suggestions appreciated. Also have Felaway on order.

What have her bg levels been the last week? I ask because once you get her regulated into lower numbers it will most likely resolve the problem.

I don't test at home yet. He is going on for a curve tomorrow. What do I do in the meantime? I can't keep this up. I thought about buying a cage and keeping him in it while I'm at work and in the evening.

If it's really a problem then do what you need to do.... Perhaps keep him in a bathroom. Really though remember he's not doing it to make you mad. He's letting you know he doesn't feel good. Get his numbers in check and that will be key.

If you are willing to learn how to home test we can help you with that and give you a shopping list. Home testing is more accurate then at the vet because they aren't stressed out.

i have tested him at home before just not for a curve. i don't feel confident enough to decide how much to give him. very new to this. only been diagnosed since September. Just bought a cage. Pretty big one. Best I can do for now to keep my sanity. Very good video. That's how I learned. From your video. Is your cat in remission?

She was for a year but had to start shots again in September. Her preshots are for the most part all under 200... But just high enough that she needs a shot.

If you start testing again we can help with dosing.

What do you mean pre shots? Before food?

The test before food and shot in the morning and evening. It's always wise to do a preshot test to make sure it's safe to give insulin.

My Tigger is on Prozac for the same reason and some other ocd behaviors. It works and the problem is solved. I say try the Prozac.

We are on month 10 with peeing out of the litter box. It has made my home a disaster area, the kitchen, bathroom, and hallway floors are ruined, No telling how much money I will have to pay apartment when we ever move out to have them replaced. I tried $200 of feliaway and it never helped. The icky poo did not help nor all the products that came along with it. I bought a new litter box, tried different litter, placed litter box in different rooms. If I ever get Shaak back in numbers that are good I have a feeling that will be the only way she ever goes back in litter box. Though I am darned curious about Prozac. I totally understand your frustration, I am living it with you.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm definately going to try Prozac. I just bought a large cage for when I'm at work. This is something that I'm not willing to live with. I know it's not deliberate but it's very stressful for me.

He's on 5 mg per day. You have to get the 10 mg tablets and break them in half. Luckily it's not too hard giving him pills.

I get 100 of them at Walmart for like $11.

Hi! Got Prozac from my vet. How do you give it to your cat? How long does it take to work?

    Hi :)
That's great! I just open his mouth and pop it in. Some days he's a little fussy about it but he's used to it now.

I forget how long it took before it starts working, sorry. I believe those types of drugs could take a week or two to start working. Let us know how it's going!

Have you ever put it in his wet food?

No, I was always worried if he didn't eat it all, he wouldn't get the full dose. They helave pill pockets too. They are soft treats with a little pocket to tuck the pill in. That is what our pet sitter uses when we're away. Works great she said. I think Greenies makes them.

You could put it in a size 5 gel cap and put it in a bit of food. You can get the empty caps on amazon

These are tablets. I can put it in his food. He has no problem eating all his food. Just wondering what others have done. Vet prescribed 1/4 of a tab.

I wouldn’t give meds at all. My boy would go outside the litter box when his bg was high. Once he was controlled he never did it again.

What helped one of my cats quite a bit with peeing outside the box, was to always wipe around the inside of the box with a clorox wipe on every cleaning, keeping about 4 inches of litter at all times, scooping as much as possible, make sure the cat doesnt sink into the litter because it's too soft, getting unscented litter, and finally making sure the box isnt to tall to step into, a low side helped alot. I also had to remove the dog pads from under the litter box once I realized they were keeping the cat away. I know that is a lot of things, but all together - they worked.

4 inches of litter? I feel my cats don't like that much litter.
