Anyone have any experience with this cat food? There is a new limited ingredient grain free Duck pate from Canidae that I had to order for Leo because everyone is backordered for his regular duck cat food. Due to his IBD I am panicking.

I could be wrong because math has never been my forte, but doing a rough calculation, it looks to me like it's about 25% carbs! Yikes! What brand do you usually feed him?

Hmm- After I posted I looked at Dr.Lisa's chart and it was listed as any where from 3% to 11%. The duck slices were higher than the pate's. Maybe I'm reading the chart wrong?
I was and am currently feeding Hills DD limited ingredient grain free duck pate. It is not considered low carb but with his IBD it was the only one I found that he doesn't throw up on a regular basis. He's done so well on this even though I know it's not the best for glucose levels. It came down to a trade off- sigh.

I see the one on her chart that you're talking about. The one I looked at was the duck morsels; I also looked at the pate and it was high, as well. I couldn't find the one on Dr. Lisa's chart (I went to the Canidae website) but I found the Chaparral Canyon variety, which is about 11%. Dr. Lisa's information (and her math!) is undoubtedly a lot better than mine, so go with what her chart says, would be my advice.

Have you tried Nature's Variety Instinct L.I. duck formula? I used it for my IBD kitty for quite a while, it's also about 11% carbs. She did pretty well on it, but ECID.

It is not considered low carb but with his IBD it was the only one I found that he doesn't throw up on a regular basis.
In that type of situation you just have to go with what he's able to eat, and work with the diabetes around the higher carbs. :)

I have some of the Nature's Variety Basic Instinct LI duck and he will eat some, but not nearly enough. Why do cats have to be so darn fussy about food? They would eat a mouse every day and never get tired of it. Or a bird or a lizard. Here we go and make all these delicious and healthy cat foods for them and most of them they don't like. Why can't they just put a plain old bird or mouse in a can?

It looks really good except there is chicken and pork broth in it. Leo does not do well with any chicken at all. Somewhere along the line he became intolerant of chicken. Making my own cat food would probably be the best thing for me to do except I have a feeling that that's not gonna happen!

My IBD kitty doesn't handle chicken well, either. That seems to be a common factor with IBD kitties. Are you giving any meds for the IBD? I tried everything. My girl was finally helped greatly by s.boulardii and Slippery Elm Bark. Her issue was diarrhea, though. She had horrible diarrhea for almost two years until I tried the s.boulardii and SEB, and she is practically diarrhea-free, now. If she has a flare I can nip it in the bud and clear it up right away.

He does get the s.boulardii daily and metronidazole when needed. PepcidAC too periodically when I can tell he's not eating with his usual gusto. The runny poos sometime show up for a day and then reside on their own. Since IBD flare ups come and go I can almost tell now when they're starting. He is so much better now than he was a few years ago. I found that he can't tolerate any dry food no matter what it's made of. It will come right back up after he eats. He doesn't pass gas anymore either- Thank God! A large cat with a lot of gas is not fun to be around!
It's great you found something to manage your kitty's symptoms. It's such a frustrating condition.

I am not a large person and collectively my cats weigh about 60 pounds. They snuggle in tight to me or on top of me at night, now that the weather has changed, and because of their weight on the covers, they tend to pin me down in bed. A couple of nights ago I had three of them in bed with me, and just as I closed my eyes the fourth one came and joined, and somebody started passing gas. OMG, it was probably the worst kitty gas I have ever experienced, and they had me pinned so I couldn't escape it, lol. I swear there had to be a big, green cloud of noxious gas surrounding my bed, it was awful, and it went on for about 10 minutes! The things we put up with for the love of our cats, lol!:p:rolleyes::facepalm::cat:

Ha Ha! So no one snitched as to who it was huh? They probably laugh about it later.

I'm sure they did, lol. I suspect it was my IBD girl, she's the one with the worst gas, but they've all been known to leave some "air biscuits" behind! it wasn't me.jpg

Better than real biscuits hanging on butt fur down the legs! I sometimes have to wait for Leo to exit the litter box with a piece of toilet paper. Which reminds me he needs his 'hygiene' clip. I tell him it's his 'spa' day, but he's not impressed.

I did receive the Canidae duck pate with LI and grain free yesterday. I've been mixing a small amount into what I have left of his other duck food. So far he's eating it so I guess I'll have to see if it starts coming back up or not. It's a pate but it's very dense so I have to cream it with water. Keeping my fingers crossed because it sure would be nice to be able to use a less expensive food for him.
