Please help! My husband got up at 5 am and gave the kitty 2 units of ProZinc and fed him. Unknowingly I did the same at 6:30 am. It’s Sunday morning and vet isn’t in. What can I do. I’m very new to this insulin thing so I’m freaking out a bit.

I can't give any advice for what to do but it would be a good idea to mark this as a 911 post so someone could be alerted faster to respond. If no one replies maybe an ER visit is warranted, or at least a call to an ER clinic.

Two questions: are you home testing, and do you have an emergency vet you could take Samson to today?

Hard to say in a situation like this what is going to happen. Without being able to test blood glucose, I wouldn't want to manage an overdose at home and would go to the ER.

How do I mark this as a 911. I’m very new to the forum.

Go to the left end of the title bar on your thread page. Click on that area and a little menu drops down. Then click on the red 911.

As others have said, if you're not testing blood glucose at home I'd call the nearest ER vet clinic and take him there.

Have you been doing home testing? What was his pre-shot glucose? Do you have testing result history to know how low the 2u does normally takes him? If the 2u does not normally take him very low, it is possible you could give him some higher carb food and monitor him closely, having Karo syrup or whatever is in your hypo kit ready for use if needed, BUT if you are not home testing and do not have that that kind of data and/or a hypo kit, call the nearest emergency vet and get him in for them to monitor. If 2u normally takes him pretty low, the double dose could be very dangerous.

We have not been home testing. We began using this new insulin (ProZinc) about 10 days ago per our vet and are now feeding Samson only wet food (Purine DM). So far he has been doing very well on this dose. I did phone an emergency vet clinic. They told me to feed him carbs - which I did immediately after I realized what had happened - and watch him closely. No more insulin today since he's already had the 4 units. So far he is not lethargic. He's not playing much, but I think it's because his little belly is so full. I have a One Touch Verio glucose meter here at home (for my own use). Can I use this on the kitty to test him?

If you're game to try you can certainly use your human glucose meter to test your kitty. The best area is on the outer upper edge of his ear about a half inch down from the tip. You can try free hand poking with a lancet if the trigger mechanism on the poking device scares him. If his BG is at or below 50, give some high carb food and post here for more advice.

Thanks. My hubby is gone for a few minutes but will try to test with my meter when he gets back. Will update.

How many hours has it been since the second insulin dose? ProZinc starts working about 2 or 3 hours after the shot and it usually peaks about 5 to 7 hours after. You haven't reached that point yet so you have to keep a close eye on him.

You may have only joined recently but that doesn't make Samson's well being any less important than any other cat here. If you're too embarrassed about a mistake you made you should know you're not the first and won't be the last. You've already figured out a system so this won't happen again so we won't offer any condescending advice. Neither will you get crucified for what happened, there's no gossip or back-stabbing here.
If things went badly for Samson you don't owe us anything. Some people will post on Grief, others just deal with it in there own way. We only ask because we care.
:bighug: or :( from all of us.
