Survived Thanksgiving

We had our first real test of Zulu's remission on Thursday. He was still on insulin when we were making holiday plans and none of our family lives close by, so we didn't think travelling was a practical option for us. Instead, we offered to host, even though we live in a fairly small apartment with a postage stamp sized kitchen.

Then suddenly, Zulu's pancreas woke up.

So in addition to the normal stress of hosting family in tight quarters I was freaking out about how the stress of company would affect Zulu's remission. Added to that, about twenty minutes after my brother and his wonderfully sweet but hyperactive six year old daughter arrived, I noticed a bowl of dry food on the floor. I asked DH, whose food is that? He said it was Zulu's. Only it wasn't Zulu's. Zulu only gets YA Mature Zero, if we're giving him any dry food at all, and the dry food on the floor was NOT YA Mature Zero. It was some leftover IAMs that he insisted we keep until our civvie could finish it off, except our civvie is allergic to chicken and can't eat it either. By the time I noticed it, Zulu had eaten half the bowl. Ugh!

The rest of Thanksgiving and all day yesterday we gave Zulu zero carb Tiki Cat food, and this morning we did his weekly BG check. A one point difference from last week, thank goodness! Seriously, holidays are stressful enough without this kind of drama!

I love DH, but he can be a bit of a hoarder at times. We still have a carton of strawberry ice cream that he bought ages ago. Has about 3 bites of freezer burn left in it, but he won't chuck it and gets upset when I say I'm going to. I'm planning on sorting through the extra cat food and diabetic supplies to donate to the shelter, hopefully before the next mix-up occurs.
