AMPS 215. Not a bad start after the epic bounce to the moon. It sure was weird, but I'm going with "because cat" unless and until Asia says otherwise.

Our fridge did not get replaced on Monday, they cancelled and are supposed to come today. Hopefully that will happen. I hope it's not the contractors in the house that caused the high BGs because there is no end in sight. It seems we moved in to this apartment at the exact date of planned obsolescence for all of the appliances, 2 have been replaced so far and 2 more in the works. Still have at least 2 more contractor appointments coming in the next week or so.

Successfully used the auto feeder last night. I might find something to put it on top of so it's a bit higher like her raised food tray. She won't be able to hear when food is coming, well, because she can't hear, but she toddles over to the food dish about hourly, so she'll figure it out. She ate almost all the foods I had in there from last night. Weird design comment, the ice pack compartment is sitting under the exposed food compartment? So it cools off the current food rather than keeping the other ones cool. Okay. o_O

Happy to see that epic bounce is done! Could have been a combination of that run of greens, strangers in the house, etc. Hopefully it's a one-time thing!

Good to see a more respectable AMPS today. Those highs were very strange, but I guess with the upcoming contractor visits, you'll see if that is the issue!

I never used an ice pack, I just used cold food from the fridge, with an ice cube on top. Hope you have a good day with Asia!

That was my plan, but I dumped out all the ice and cleared as much as I could from the fridge and freezer in anticipation of Monday. :banghead: Hopefully will have ice tonight!

Nice sunny start for Asia. I hope she slides down today and yesterday was just a blip. I'm glad you were able to successfully use the autofeeder.

Haha! It works, for now, it's just on the fritz, it was supposed to be replaced on Monday, so I cleared out as much as I could on Sunday night.

Gesh, glad she got that out of her system o_O Hopefully she'll be back to surfing on the lower floors today. My crystal ball is broken and have no insight as to why....so "because she's a cat" sounds good:rolleyes:

Yay for successful auto feeding! :woot: What a pain with all the contractors in and out, but it'll be nice to have brand new appliances.

PMPS 84, I have no problems shooting this number, but should I not feed her and stall to see if she's coming up or would it matter? It looks like a double dip, but after her recent moon landing, I just don't know what she's up to right now.

+1 65, a 20 point drop from an already low number, and that was supposed to be a food spike. Looks like Asia gets a little FF.

So it turned into a pretty nice cycle. Surf safe, Asia! The LagoonMeister has his eye on you.

I can relate to your appliances story. Several year ago when our 'fridge gave up it took over a month to replace it (because it had to fit into a tight space and not many models would). It was January and we kept foods from freezing on the porch by putting them into coolers!

Yes Rusty, keep an eye on this one, she didn't read the "sharks are not our friends" memo.

Similar problem, they had to take the appliance doors off just to make it through our front door! I only have a smallish lunch type cooler, so I just threw everything in a tightly packed cardboard box with ice packs (2 dancers in the house, we have plenty of ice packs)!

She has surfed them before, I would be less concerned if it wasn't +1 and +2. Her appetite for FF gravy is top notch. She's not having much of the Rad cat, but I suspect that will change when FF gravy is no longer on the menu

    Much better!!!

I wanted to explain the concept of “high before the break”. We see this when a kitty bounces, then appears to be clearing the bounce, but stops and goes up high again usually for just a short period of time before quickly heading back down and clearing the bounce all the way.

Asia didn’t do that...she steadily climbed and slowly cleared.

    Surf Asia...just a bit higher!

+4 48, meh! I really don't want to reduce after what's been going on the past couple of days. If she comes back up from here, can I pretend that was a 50?

She rejected the FF gravy and went for plain old RadCat instead. This cat right now.

She had about 1/2 tsp on her regular Rad cat (probably 1-2 tsp of that) at +3, only ate about half of that and then went back and cleaned off the rest right before +4 test.

She's completely unperturbed with these numbers right now. The time she gave me a 30 she was ravenous, she's doing her typical check out the food bowl on the hour, eat a couple bites and walk away from the rest of it thing

Let’s see how easily she comes up. If you have to work to get the numbers up, she needs a reduction.

If she comes up quickly and stays there, I didn’t see a 48 26CA6184-A61D-4A1B-9517-B4CE699CD202.gif

:joyful: That makes sense, if she keeps at it, she's being rather insistent for less insulin.

+4/+5 is usually her pm nadir (from what I can tell), but sometimes she just surfs around the same number into the wee hours.

My thing is, the last time she earned a reduction was after some funny business, and if this is a reduction, would be a similar scenario here. I'd feel more confident that it's the thing to do and not an anomaly if she threw this number after a few normal cycles instead of after the one offs. Does that make sense? That's just my gut talking, by the way, not anything I can back up with science.

You mean she was clearing a bounce? I see she got down to 30 on 11/25 after clearing a bounce.

This was a very familiar pattern with Gracie as well and as I got more experienced, if she dropped below 50 on a bounce clearing cycle but came right smack back up, I didn’t reduce. This is part of “know thy cat”. But then you have to stay on your toes because it’s a clue that a dose reduction might be right around the corner. The protocol does have a specific reduction point but you hold the syringe and you have a lot of good data.

For other members reading this: please follow the protocol as this advice is for Asia, and Stacy tests a lot.

Makes sense. I'm still learning how to interpret the data and still getting to know my cat (you'd think this wouldn't be an issue 21 years in :p) but I'm getting to know the diabetic version of her I suppose.

Yes, they were both bounces, but I say funny business because they were more unusual than her "regular" bounces. In the first case (where I got the 30) she dropped from a high number much more rapidly than she had done. For this most recent bounce, she went up up up and stayed black for several hours, which she had done once before on 11/9, and that also resulted in low greens when it cleared (just none below 50 that time).

She has failed a reduction at this dose already. Under the TR protocol, you could hold this dose for three drops between 40-50 on separate days and then reduce by 0.25u. If she drops below 40 once, it’s an automatic 0.25u reduction.

What do you think about trying that?

    That sounds worth trying.

Is there such a thing as a dose being a good dose, but it just gets too much momentum? Like if you give a short shot, intentionally, every so many cycles to drain the depot a bit, but then go back to the regular dose the next cycle?

I wouldn't do that. Too hard to tell what size the depot thinks it should be and what you should change the dose from or to, if you need to change the dose. Also, if you wait too long to take a reduction, the depot can get ahead of you and you might be battling lower numbers for a while.

Yes, to the first question for different reasons. For example, absorption might be better one cycle.

On the second, I’ve seen a trend towards this on the board of late. It’s not something we ever did in the 5-1/2 years Gracie was diabetic and one didn’t see other board members doing it.

Once in a while, I see a situation where it’s handy on a one time basis but it’s not in the protocol. IMHO, it’s not a practice I would suggest using in order to hold a dose longer. It can backfire on you and leave you with a cycle where it’s really, really difficult to get numbers up. And an overfull Lantus depot can take several cycles to drain.

Remember that Lantus and levemir are cumulative so the effects of one shot build upon prior ones.

Okay, so that's not a thing. I wouldn't be keen to do it anyway, I was just churning in my head what is in between a dose that takes them too low on occasion and a failed reduction.

Hmmm... I move the shots around so I don't repeatedly stick the same place, either side of her and vertical movement. Tonight's shot was much closer to her belly than her shoulder. I heard shots in the tummy are absorbed better, but I never put much stock in it because it didn't seem to make a noticeable difference for her where I shot (I record that in my home log). Tonight's shot was not a tummy shot, I never do that (too much of a thick and fluffy fur battle there), it was just on her side very near her tummy. I know many other odd things can affect absorption, but this stood out a little bit as it was near her tummy and I was shooting an already low number which isn't something I've had to do often.

Marje and Wendy, thanks a million for your insight and help! :bighug::bighug:

This FD stuff can be so tricky and cats are tricky by nature, so that's double trouble!

I'm going to try to cat nap in between tests now. It's almost 3:30 am here and I'm nearing the point where I am going to be a (busy) walking zombie all day tomorrow. ;)

I always rotated Gracie’s shots as well to prevent developing the lipomas that can decrease absorption and kept not s on it. I never noticed any difference in absorption from spot to spot.

However, as consistent as we try to be with the shots (e.g. how far in we insert the needle, the angle of the needle, etc), there are still variables related to that and the cat’s body that can change the absorption on any given cycle. Studies in humans have shown that even with the same dose and on the same day, absorption rates can vary as much as 50%.

Another little fun tidbit from your L/L Land support team :rolleyes::p
