I'll try my best to make this short. I got Peanut controlled so I stopped giving insulin. You won't find any info on my charts because I started working and found it much easier for me just to write it down on a notebook, that's what worked for me so that's what I used. I think I just got complacent once he was controlled and I stopped testing.

A few days ago he was acting funny and I decided to test him, I saw that his number was 244 and without thinking I gave him 1/4 units of insulin. Last night I noticed that he was sitting by the water bowl with his head in the corner. I called his name and he turned to me but then turned back around. I picked him up and he cried, he felt lighter and I noticed that he wouldn't eat. Today he still isn't eating and I'm now forcing liquids but he doesn't want it. I tested his ketones with a blood test meter and it said 5.2 so I'm freaking out and I don't know what to do at this point.

Did I cause this by giving him insulin? I called my vet and she said that it will cost a few thousand dollars for me to have him treated most likely and I can't afford that. Can anyone give me some advice? I'm not ready to lose my little man.

    Hi there,

is there a chance to keep him in the ER clinic to try to flash out the ketones (not completely but let say to a trace amount)?
24 hours stay helped my girl to get stabilized - it'll help - it is going to b less than several thousand.

That can't be from 1/4 of a unit could it? Expired insulin or allergic reaction anyone?
No way that is several $$$, you're being taken advantage of. More people will follow up very quickly.

My understanding is the ketones read high - 5.2, was I wrong?
Treating DKA - if it is DKA will cost a lot..

    Sieden,
can you please help me to understand the situation?
Is it him not eating that scares you or is it the ketones presence?
I use dip sticks for ketone measurement and do not understand the value of 5.2 you posted from the blood testing ketone device... is it high?
Weight loss, not eating - could be also as ketone presence symptoms - plus your vet's estimate made me think ketones...
If so - I might have advise for you just please clarify for me ...

The 5.2 on the ketones is considered high.
    0.0 to 0.6 = low
    0.6 to 1.5 = moderate
    1.5 to 8.0 = high

I know this is stressful. Others are helping you. I hope you are able to get your kitty back to good health. I doubt 0.25 units of insulin caused this, unless the insulin is expired.

I called a few places and found that the really cheap places don't keep cats over night, even my old regular vet doesn't keep them overnight. There is an emergency vet here that opens at 6am so I'll have to call them in the morning and see how much they are, maybe I'll be able to bring him in to that place. Right now I am taking the juice from the Fancy Feast emergency cans that I have and mixing it with a little bit of water and then I'm drawing that up with a baby syringe and making Peanut drink that. He doesn't like it but at least it's a little bit of calories because he's not getting any food into his tummy otherwise.

That one dose since you stopped isn't going to be the issue, I wonder if he has an infection or inflammation going on. That and being diabetic even if in remission is worrisome and along with the keytone #.

Wishing Peanut good luck, hope you can get him in quickly.

Thanks for the hugs and prayers.

The expiration on the Lantus Solostar box says 2/2019
The pen that I used has been opened for quite some time, probably 6 months but I store the pen properly and I have no reason to believe that the open pen is itself expired just because it's opened.

Ok, I am so sorry BUT - there a way as I see it:

My cat spent 24 hours in the ER clinic - taken in very bad condition with ketones >80 - very high.
She was receiving insulin shots, AB, SQ fluids and was force fed. The vet managed to get the ketones level to a Trace amount - and we took her home.ETA: the clinic also did the electrolyte balancing - it improved but when we took her home it was far from ideal - restored with eating(assisted feeding).
If you can afford the 24 hours stay - there is a chance that vets can flash if not all ketones but at least to reduce it - and then it is up to you to start very aggressive home therapy - I'll tell you all we did.
Let me know if and when you are going to the clinic - if ever - and then I'll post about what we've done.
It was not easy but we made it with the help of the Board - daily help - and you will have all of the support and tips you'll need.
I say if I could do it - so can you.

Good things: you are willing and experienced, you already have insulin +supplies and good at home testing.

Seiden - this isn't because you gave him insulin, this is likely because he needed insulin and wasn't getting it sooner. His body can't use the food so is burning fat stores causing ketones and sounds like quickly heading toward DKA. This is indeed a critical issue - I hope you've gotten with DCIN....

    HUGS and thoughts and prayers....

Thank you for all of the prayers. We're here at the vet clinic now. Peanut has been seen by the vet. He's lost 3 lbs. His face looks really skinny. The vet said that it's probably due to him being really dehydrated. They want to run some blood work and that's all that I know as of right now.

If you do any online shopping check out AmazonSmile. The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organization of your choice. Every time I shop DCIN receives a percentage of what I spend. It's a great program, especially around the holidays!

I just noticed how similar the profile photo looks to the one I just took. That's a little bench in this room and a towel that I have him covered with.

The doctor came in and said that his electrolytes are out of whack, his liver isn't functioning properly and he has a UTI. He could require months a feeding tube which I can do at home, the feeding tube will depend on whether he's willing to eat or not. She said he's looking at 3 days overnight.

Before they go with a feeding tube, I hope they plan on trying nausea meds and appetite stimulants first

But hopefully once he's feeling a little better, he'll eat for you!!

I agree about the feeding tube. Sounds much worse than it is and it can be a life saver. Was the ketone level tested? Any mention of ketoacidosis?

    Sieden,
any chance that you can run home and bring in his favorite/ his regular food?
They might be serving healthy or nutritious food at the hospital but it rarely the yummiest one...
If they let you do that he might start eating for you... just a thought...

    ETA: Did they mention DKA?

We had the feeding tube in Leo for 6 weeks this year. You should try syringe feeding first. Big syringes are used - they have them at Petsmart, etc. Syringe feeding is messy, but it avoids surgery.

Healing vines for Peanut, he is a trooper. He's not looking good right now, but with some tender care and some food I hope he gets better.

They said that DKA can't be ruled out but the liver values that were shown could also cause ketones. The ketones were very high though. I'm not worried about the feeding tube but I do hope that he eats or that they try other options first. I can bring his favorite food up here tomorrow maybe but not tonight, it took me an hour to get up here. Well maybe I can if there is a Wal-Mart near by, I'm downtown and have no idea where I'm at really. I'm still inside waiting but I'll see if they will let me come back with food for him if I can find a store.

Sprocket had high liver values in the 600s in the begin of march and he went back to normal by may. He is on ursodiol and is still on it cause it was his 2nd time with liver issues but he had ketones 4x too. He is doing much better now. Hang in there, they can get better.

I felt like it honestly but I had to force myself to sleep with sleeping pills. I had a bad accident a few nights ago from staying up all night. I'm a sleep walker and a few nights ago I just couldn't sleep and I didn't feel like taking my meds, the next night when I went to sleep I started sleep walking and I fell down our wooden staircase head over heels. I went to the ER so they could check my brain and spine for injuries. God was watching over me because I didn't break a single bone but I'm bruised from head to toe. And all that I got out of it was a shiny new hospital bill and nightmares.

The vet called me just a little bit ago with an update. There is some good news, Peanut is responding to the treatment when I was told last night that there was a chance that he wouldn't respond at all. He said that the new blood work is showing that his electrolytes are improving, Peanut is now being responsive where last night he wouldn't move when I called his name and he's stronger today than yesterday. He's going to give me a call later today with another update. Oh and he has not yet begun to eat on his own.

Good morning Sieden, thanks for the update! Poor little guy, I hope he'll improve soon.
Have they given you any preliminary Dx?
If they'll let you visit him maybe you can try to feed him yourself - it works sometimes, someone posted about it not long ago.

They didn't really give any diagnosis because he's got so many issues going on right now, the electrolyte imbalance is the biggest concern because of how extremely low his phosphorus and potassium were. The vet last night said that they were critically low when I brought him in. I'm guessing that they are hoping that the other things will balance out when they correct the electrolytes but who knows. I don't see anywhere on the plan where they are going to treat with insulin to get his BG down so I'm a little concerned with that since his BG was 300 last night. I'm afraid to deal with it on my own if he gets better and they send him home. I mean I'm sure that I could do it but I think that he's much safer in their hands since they are doing round the clock blood work and I don't have access to that.

They won't send him home until his electrolytes are stable, so don't worry about that!!

A cat doesn't HAVE to have high BG numbers to go into DKA....it can happen when they're in lower numbers too....it's just not as common (of course Peanut isn't a "common" cat, is he? ;))

Great to hear he's perked up some since last night......I'd suggest you go in for a visit later and see if YOU can get him to eat. Cats will eat for their caretakers when they won't eat for anybody else a lot of times.

Come on Peanut!!! You've got lots of cheerleaders here!!!

DCIN thanks everyone who's donated for Peanut. Large or small, it all adds up and no matter what, we never want to have to say "Sorry, we can't help" to anybody!!

It sounds almost identical to what was with Ducia - I have a copy of her entire file from that ER stay - blood works, electrolytes, meds administered and even the vet's notes by hour. I reviewed it last night- so very much alike with what is going on with Peanut! The electrolytes will get better with the kind of fluids they are giving but he also need to start eating. It seems that the clinic staff knows what they are doing and hopefully things will improve soon!
have they told why didn't they do the shots?
I am so happy for you that he can stay! Yes, it is better that he is in the professional med settings to monitor. I took Ducia out earlier just out of necessity - her readings - the BG, the electrolytes and liver values were far from ideal and staying longer would be desirable. But she pulled thru anyway.I posted earlier about 24 hours only stay because you have mentioned the financial burden of a longer stay and I knew 1st hand that although it sounded daunting there still was a chance of recovery (Ducia is a living proof) and I didn't want you to get despaired completely when a short stay could have provided a chance, even if a small one :bighug:. If you are approved to keep him there longer - great! Those medical things which we, the lay people do not understand scares us the most - I can relate to it well, believe me.

On the practical side: It might be very wise thing to request a copy of the entire file once you checked him out.
I reviewed Ducia file and compared it to her latest BW - it was nice to see the progress she've made!

Hang in there, Seiden :bighug:, so many people on here wishing you and Peanut well!
Keep us updated esp if you go to visit

this place makes me smile, it is so nice seeing there are so many caring ones, makes you remember the world isn't so bad afterall. Hope Peanut stays strong and gets better quickly, sounds like he is in good hands to do so.
}}hugs{{ to his mama, stay strong too!

Such a wonderful thing DCIN is doing!! will start using your associate link to shop on A from now on. it would be great however if DCIN would except paypal for donations, think you would get more people who are iffy about using their credit cards on non-major sites to donate if you did.

they do accept PayPal - if your account is linked to your banking card there is no fee for the service and the money sent right away - I used it yesterday

@Sieden Now that things have calmed down a bit I just wanted to say I'm sorry for my first remark about being overcharged etc. That wasn't really helping but I've seen people get taken advantage in their hour of need. Sad but true. This is about Peanut so let's move on, another lesson learned.

Yes, thank you very much, I cannot stress how very much it meant to me to see that there were kind people that were willing to help this much. You can believe that I will be donating back as soon as I can.

You can go through the link in my signature to "DCIN Critical Care Fund" and use PayPal to pay, or you can donate directly through Paypal by sending to donate@dcin.info.....Use "friends and family" to avoid fees. When you "check out" of Paypal, you can put a note in if there's a particular use (or cat) you want your donation earmarked for

Just a little FYI....If you use the YouCaring site, you don't HAVE to donate to YouCaring on top of your donation!

Unfortunately I have no family here and I don't know any of the neighbors. I do live with my boyfriend but lately he's been acting as if he's lost of lot of brain cells so I'm not really sure if I trust him with such a big task. I think I'll try to do this on my own as much as I can but I'll teach my boyfriend how to do it anyway just in case I have to rely on him. I did have my ex do it a few times and though I was leery about that situation too, he proved to me that he was capable.

I have a husband like that , lovely though he is. He leaves his brain cells all over the place. I am forever picking them up and trying to put them back in some semblance of order.

Very, very pleased this morning to read that Peanut is responding to the treatment. Hope you manage to get some food inside her.

    @Chris & China
Thanks . Couldn't get anything to work yesterday . Maybe coz of NZ card .
Will try again as have paypal.

New update: Peanut talked to one of the techs when she went into the room today and he wasn't really speaking much yesterday. She said that she went in and gave him some loving. He also made some effort to eat on his own. He didn't eat much but he licked at it a few times which is a major sign of improvement I believe because yesterday I was forcing liquids and I could tell that he didn't want it.

I'm glad to read that Peanut's clinical signs are improving.

Is he getting any anti-nausea medication?

I knew this would happen. Clicking the link to DCIN and wiping away tears, it's not just me right?
Nothing else says thank you like money does to people who really need it. I hope that came out right.
    Thank you Chris.

I know @LizzieInTexas in close to the Houston area. Maybe she knows a reliable person to help with Peanut when he gets home. (Should you need!)

Perfect.....and even if it didn't, we thank you!! DCIN is a wonderful organization that I'm proud to represent. Every dime raised goes to help a kitty in need....in this case, Peanut!

I got a new update: It's not good guys. They have been giving him stuff in his IV to make his phosphorus and potassium levels go up and his numbers were up from last night so they backed the amount down to see if he could maintain the levels on his own but he couldn't and now his sodium levels and dangerously low even though he's getting sodium in his bag. The vet said that in all honesty she feels that I will not be able to take Peanut home and that I should consider putting him down. I'm so sad right now, I'm not ready for this. He's my little buddy and I can't believe that this all has happened within days, he seemed fine just a few days ago :(

I wouldn't give up just yet......give him at least another night and see if he can bounce back

Have you been back to see him? Sometimes a visit from mom can really help. It will also help for you to talk to Peanut.....see what he has to tell you.

    Sending hugs :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Yeah I'm not giving up until they have tried everything. I told the vet to do all that she can. I'm about to cry myself into a damn stroke.

Nobody wants them to suffer so you always have to do what's best for them, but I'm a firm believer that if they're tired of the fight, they'll tell you

Well I told Peanut before I left the hospital for him to put his boxing gloves on. I also said that I won't be selfish and try to keep him here on Earth with me if it's going to cause him to suffer. If it's in his best interest to be put down then I will do that but I want to see this out and give him a fighting chance to recover before I make that decision. I am going to go see him tomorrow. I need to see him for myself. I honestly believe that it might help, me and him have a bond like you wouldn't believe and he might think that I just left him there so I will for sure go back tomorrow to visit. I was going to go today but I missed the 1 hour visiting window due to traffic, I will leave an hour early tomorrow.

Yeah, I'd believe it.....all of us totally understand that bond. No matter how close we are to our other cats, the bond between a sugarcat and their caretaker is a step above.
