Yum's diarrhea vs pumpkin, S. boulardii, metronizadole

In a previous condo (above) , I wrote how it looked like the noncolonizing yeast S. Boulardii was more successful in reducing Yum's diarrhea than metronizadole.

I also wrote that I later realized Yum's blood sugar seemed to shoot up when I stopped the metronizadole, even though her diarrhea was slightly improved with the yeast. I thought maybe it was due to the anti inflammatory properties of the metronizadole (perhaps arising from some suppression of the immune system).

Well, I finally vanquished her antibiotic induced diarrhea with 1/2 teaspoon of canned cooked plain pumpkin. She had formed wet poo on Saturday morning. I gave her 1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin mixed with her favorite no salt added packed in water canned deboned sardines that afternoon. She did not poo on Sunday. On Sunday afternoon I gave her pumpkin with sardines again. This morning she had a perfect tootsie roll dry poo in her litter box. WOW. 2.5 weeks of liquid or partially liquid poo finally GONE!!!

Of course I don't know if the pumpkin would have worked 2.5 weeks ago---was it the total answer or was it part of a cumulative answer? I don't know. But if she gets diarrhea again, I will start with the pumpkin.

She still has soaring blood glucose numbers. I am hoping they will improve with the end of the diarrhea, but I am not holding my breath. I don't know what is going on with her diabetes.

I just wanted to post this testament to pumpkin for diarrhea, in case anyone else faces this problem.

 

Yay for finding a solution for Yum! Hope you can stay on top of it moving forward. Do you think the sardines played a role in it?

 

I am pretty sure the sardines just got her to eat the pumpkin! They are high in omega fatty acids, though.
I forgot to mention she also had some probiotics. But I am convinced the pumpkin triggered the final shift to normal poo.

 

Yeah for no more diarrhea! It's not uncommon after a bout of diarrhea that the kitty doesn't have a bowel movement for a few days. The S. Boularrdi can be continued on a maintenance dose of 1/4 capsule twice daily for 3 days beyond the diarrhea ceasing. And maybe give her some SEB to heal her intestinal tract.

 

Darn. Darn. Darn. I skipped the S. boulardii and pumpkin today and she had diarrhea this evening. I will give them to her this evening. I am boarding her for a week starting Thursday. I guess I will freeze sardine snacks for her with pumpkin and S. boulardii. I had been smearing the yeast on her paw but I need something that will work while she is boarded. Is there anything bad about keeping her on the pumpkin and yeast for a week, whether she has diarrhea or not?
Nothing is going smoothly with Yum these days. Fingers crossed I get everything right soon. She is tired of me chasing her around with yeast paste, etc.

 

Neko was on pumpkin longer term, but for constipation (she was on long term bupe). It acts like a prebiotic, so OK with the probiotic. Maybe you need to try the S. Boulardii without MOS, which is supposed to taste bad.

 

When you say yeast, are you referring to the S. Boulardii? For a very long time, I had my cats on 1 tsp of pumpkin twice a day. ( now I am doing aloe vera juice) There is nothing wrong with that and as far as the S. Boulardii, if you give it to her for another week, I can't see how that would hurt her at all. I give a therapeutic dose of 1/2 capsule twice a day while having diarrhea and then switch to the maintenance dose of 1/4 capsule twice a day for three more days but, I don't see how a few more days will hurt.

 

I've been giving her 1 capsule twice a day of the S. boulardii (smeared on a paw). Do you think I can freeze it? I want to mix the sardines, pumpkin and S. boulardii together and freeze them in a baggie for the vet techs.

 

I don't know whether S. Boulardii can be froze or not. Pumpkin and sardines def can be.

 

I also don’t know about freezing it. I give 1/4 cap bid to my Tobey as well......he doesn’t have diarrhea but had coccidia as a kitten so I just give him extra support.

She ate the pumpkin and S. boulardii mixed in with the radcat chicken this morning. Yay! Maybe she doesn't mind the taste, or maybe her diabetes has her really hungry. This is a huge relief for boarding, one less bag of food to freeze.
I will try mixing in the SEB later today. It is too slimy to smear on her paw. I thought she rejected it in food before, but I will try again.

Google says baking yeast can be frozen before use and in dough with little or no damage, so if I had to freeze the S. boulardii in food it would probably be okay.
