Hello everyone. First let me start off by saying I’m so thankful I found this forum. My name is Mike and my cat Bansky was just daignosed with diabetes. He’s only 3.5 years old. He was urinating frequently and vomiting. I brought him in and his BG was at 400. Hello to all and looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Wow! Banksy's a stunner!!! (Named for the artist? Or is there another story?)

    Welcome to you both, Mike.

    Quick questions:

    1. Did the vet check Banksy's urine for glucose and order a fructosamine test (blood work) as part of the diagnostic work-up?

    2. Did the vet check for ketones (urine or blood test)?

    3. Did the vet give any idea of why the vomiting?

    4. Is Banksy eating and drinking OK at the moment?

I did actually name him after the artist. And thank you.

The vet said she did blood work and urine and said his glucose was 400 and he had a UTI (probably from the high glucose she said)

She said the vomiting was caused by the high level of glucose in his system.

I honestly think it’s because, partially the diabetes and from feeding him dry kibble. (shame on me and I feel terrible)

She didn’t say anything about ketones

She also said he’s losing muscle mass.

The strange part is you would never be able to tell he’s sick. He’s drinking water and playing and be normal as far as he goes personality wise.

He was free fed and on dry kibble but I’ve since switched him to fed and twice day and he eats good.

if that was the case I’d have quite that cat.

Banksy is my favorite artist, I have a thing for graffiti and I always thought of Bansky as a rebel/mysterious and love his thought provoking artwork and my cat is a rebel but he’s also so lovable so I was like what a perfect name. Sounds dumb but it fits my cat to a T.

Don't beat yourself up. I know many point a finger to dry food but I'm really not convinced yet (and I've read up a lot) that it's That Bad. I've had all my kitties on (high quality) dry food forever and Quintus is the first to have diabetes, and his diabetes is secondary to a nasty pancreatitis.

Was your kitty checked for pancreatitis? I'm not certain BG in the 400s would cause vomiting (Quintus was way beyond that and didn't puke once), can't recall having seen anything about that either, but ECID.

One thing that does cause vomiting, however, is pancreatitis. And pancreatitis can cause diabetes. (Insulin is made in the pancreas, so when the pancreas can't do its job, you end up with too much sugar in the blood => diabetes.) Worth asking/checking! There is a snap test for pancreatitis (not very precise but handy). Otherwise one commonly measured value in blood tests is total lipase, which when high, can lead one to test pancreas-specific lipase (this must be done in the lab).
