I was conducting a search in regards to the approval of prozinc in Japan and the link to the FDMB thread regarding my being stuck with expired insulin appeared. I have now changed the name of that link in hopes it won't pop up again.

I was unaware that our discussions would be available on the www. Thought they were private among members. Guess I did not read the fine print. It took a lot for me to overcome privacy issues to post here. Don't have facebook, linkln etc.

FDMB pops up a lot in Google searches. I'm sure forums like Grief and Community do not appear in Google and clicking someone's avatar will not link to your profile. So "scs islander" will appear but it's anyone's guess what that means. Connecting the dots is for people without a life. Everyone here is sincere and I'm sure we can all spot a phony.

    Maybe this sounds better. You click on my avatar and you'll see this;
"from" will lead you to Google Maps but mine says Earth which is a joke and a place in Michigan I think.
"was last seen" can show if you're here right now and what forum you're in etc.
"profile page" goes a little deeper.
Beyond this gets me a little wound up. I posted something about this once and it got a few Likes but it's not something people need to hear again.
The "was last seen" can be controlled (I think) by the check "Show my online presence".
That is a ridiculous amount of quotation marks isn't it? My head hurts. :blackeye:

I understand this, so much. I generally feel the same, and what social media presence I do have is pretty tightly controlled. I feel like the benefit of everyone’s knowledge here and the ability of the people here to literally help me save my cat’s life in a time of crisis outweighs any squeamishness I may have about my privacy. <3

I understand this 100%. I am very private and avoid social media as well. That is why I am careful as to what information I share here. My profile is private and does not contain any information about me anyway. I have not even shared my first name (I may be private, but I am not a liar, so I don't do fake names). Even though I think the people I have interacted with here are wonderful, I know how the internet works, and I am that much of a stickler for preserving my privacy. I even feel a little weird sharing info about my girls, but I told myself that was getting a little paranoid and to snap out of it. This site is a great community of cat lovers who share a bond that comes from caring for diabetic cats. Being able to reach out to people who understand and have experience and to get their input/advice and support, and being able to give the same to others, is a wonderful thing and worth a tiny bit of controlled risk.

@FurBabiesMama There is someone very needy in my past life (CJ knows the whole story) who knew I had a cat 25+ years ago and could guess through past mutual friends where I live. I never ever want to hear a knock at the door "Does Dickson live here? I'm homeless." That's no joke, I completely understand where you're coming from.

I respect the privacy of others as well. I do not have (facebook, instagram, etc) accounts. At this point, I have probably posted enough stuff that someone could easily deduce my full name. Not a big deal to me, as I publicly represent respected companies. But it could be a big deal to other people.

I hope you continue to stay with us. We want Goma to get healthier. But privacy is important too.

Our common goal on this forum is to share feline diabetes information. Many of us try to help others who have zero, or less experience with the disease. I like to think we are generally successful. And I know we have helped many owners and saved some cat lives this year (and previous years) with all the help that is provided.

Please everyone, do not misunderstand...I do not intend to leave this group. Through all of you who share the common bond I have learned a great deal. The reason I joined was for Goma's benefit as I was deeply troubled (you know that gut feeling people always talk about?)with information and processes being followed and endeavored to find experienced, knowledgeable individuals which you all have more than proven to be.

I'll just be a bit careful what I say from here on. I have nothing to hide, just like my privacy after decades in the service industry.

Thank you all for your willingness to share...

Thanks SCS Islander. That is good to hear.

It is probably good to have these privacy discussions in this forum as a reminder of privacy's importance.

My concerns are not really in regards to anyone I have ever personally known or even you guys who regularly post here, and it is not that I have anything to hide (as in anything embarrassing, illegal, etc.). I just know that putting any personal info out into the cyber universe is not a good idea. (Not that there is not already enough of our 'business' out there without our doing just waiting to be hacked.. hello, Equifax.) You never know who is out there and what wacko intent they may have.

@scs islander I haven't read every one of your posts but I've never gotten the impression you needed to be careful with what you said. I have a low tolerance for groveling, self pity and self-aggrandizement. I don't see that in you, you're just someone trying to help Goma. I'm not naïve about the world today but this is the little corner we carved out for ourselves and it usually works. And you don't get pop-up ads for cat litter the very instant you leave here. :)

Tux and I go under pseudonyms on the Internet (and put in a fake Date of Birth and Location) specifically because of privacy concerns. I appreciate the fact that this board is indexed by Google because it allows me to find information easily. I'd be sad if the Google bot were turned away, because then I'd be reliant on the much inferior search built into the forum software. I guess the point is that if you have privacy concerns, don't use your real name, date of birth, or location on the Internet. As for Tux, I doubt he has any privacy concerns on the Internet. He's more interested in basting himself on his heated cat bed (first one side, then the other, repeat), and pestering me for more food whenever he can see the bottom of his food bowl.

Due to being a violent domestic abuse survivor AND the fact that my ex has mental issues AND he threatened me thru our children even after 30+ years of not even seeing him, I don't use my real name as my user name anywhere. I do use facebook to stay in touch with family and friends but use a pseudonym. I do indicate my real first name in my signature here, I know my name is out there but not enough for him to find me. It sucks to have to live life being so careful even after 30+ years of 'hiding'.

    (((Lyresa)))

Been in a similar situation (though blessedly not as extreme - and not as perennial). I feel for you and it both saddens and angers me that such a kind and warm-hearted person as yourself has to deal with this carp.

When I first got here I wasn't exactly sure about following someone because of the creepiness factor. I turned that into a positive because my e-mail alerts are turned off (I use a land-line to communicate with friends) so now when I log in I see some friendly faces under "people you follow" and it's just a nice thing to know, nothing else.
A few of the people I follow have not been here for almost a year. I don't have the heart to un-follow them.

Here I think there is no creepiness, just an added layer of people caring about you. :bighug::bighug:
