Glucose readings are WAY lower lately than in the past.

Winston is a 12 year old neutered male, and was diagnosed back in March with his numbers around the high 20's, low 30's. My partner and I have been diligent with his feedings and injections, but I had to leave earlier for holiday reasons on xmas eve so dinner time was an hour early. I always test to see where his levels are at when dinnertime is not right on the dot usual time. When normally he would be around a 18 or so by that time he was hovering around 11. Not thrilled, but I had to get going so I gave him a lower dose since I was going to only be gone for a few hours.
Last night I tested him again, same thing, so I again gave him a lowered dose. Then tonight I tested him at about 8.5. Fed him dinner and waited an hour and tested. It's gone up to an 8.9, that's it. So now I don't know if I should just give him a couple units, or nothing and wait until morning to see what his sugar levels are (better to be too high than too low, right?)

Some other details that might be impacting his numbers: he lost one of his upper incisors last week. I've been trying to keep an eye on it, but with all the ear stabbings these past few days he won't let me get near his mouth to check but I don't see or feel any swelling on the outside of his mouth.
I've also been switching his food over. Previously he's been eating friskies wet chicken pate for years. I've been mixing it up with Instinct's chicken bites (commercial raw food) and switched him over to it 100% since yesterday. I've read that raw will impact their numbers, but THIS much?
Partner's away for a couple weeks so I'm kind of stuck alone over here freaking out a bit over this. Any advice would be SO appreciated. Thank you!

What insulin are you using and what is the usual dose? My guess is the changeover to the new diet has affected his BGs significantly.

 

He's on 3 units of vetsulin twice a day, but every time I've done a curve these past couple months his numbers will vary from 3.2 to 8.4 so I adjusted to a smidge under 3 units. I don't like how that 3.2 looks. Yaaay cat diabetes.

 

Those are good numbers. It's hard for us to advise without seeing a spreadsheet of data, though.

 

On a completely unrelated note, as I do not have enough experience to offer an helpful advice, Winston is ADORABLE! The look on his face and that little pink puffball hat...I’m in love. SQUEEEE!!
