I know it isn’t official, but he’s so close! He has not had an insulin dose since 12/14, and hasn’t had a blood sugar over 120 since 12/17. I have been only testing once a day (I missed yesterday:|) and I have been testing at different times before and after meals to see where he lands. I know remission isn’t always permanent, and given his age, if he develops any other health issues this could cause a relapse. Still, if he can get through this weekend, then New Years Day he will officially be diet controlled and it will be a different world than it was on Thanksgiving! I’m so grateful for all of the advice and support I have received here, either directly or by observing how everyone rallies around every cat here. I’ve learned a lot, and plan to continue doing so.
In that spirit, I have a question about monitoring/ maintenance during these next several weeks. In addition to observing his behaviors, food intake, weight, etc. how often should I continue to check his blood sugar? I think someone mentioned tapering down to eventually monitoring monthly if all else is going well. What about ketones? I haven’t picked up a meter for this yet, but plan to do so tomorrow or Sunday, if I can find one locally. If he is asymptotic (eating and drinking normally) do I need to test routinely at all, or only if something is off? If it should be a routine, how often?

Thank you so much for all your support. You guys are all rock stars!

HERE is the post about reduction and OTJ trials - might be helpful if you haven't come across it yet.
I think that just like for me it might be difficult for an experienced folks to assess the situation properly without having any nightly data.. IDN.
The numbers looks so good, fingers crossed, I hope is done with the juice!
But.. talk to someone w/ OTJ experience... Like @Wendy&Neko ....

That’s all very helpful, thank you. I did read through your link, and while I appreciate all of the information and recommendations, given Vader’s hypo episode and his subsequent responses to insulin, I am pretty comfortable with his numbers right now. I will continue to test him and watch for signs of relapse, but I am not prepared to restart insulin at this point. <3

Of course, :bighug::):bighug:, you know him the best and you'd do what's best for him. i never had any doubt about it. :)
Just wanted to give you what might be helpful to read/ to mull over with before you decide to go off juice.
Very best wishes to get off the juice!
    Sincerely!

Good luck with the remission. Not sure why Tanya tagged me or gave you the link to starting OTJ trials from the Lantus/Levemir forum as I see you were on Prozinc. I also never went through OTJ with my girl, as she had acromegaly and stayed on insulin to the end.

In general, I would keep testing twice a day to the end of the two week trial, then maybe daily or every two days for a couple weeks, then back it off to weekly for a couple months. I would always test at least once a month, or if you see anything off in terms of food, water drinking, lethargy or litterbox use. Make sure you keep up the low carb diet, and get him in regularly for vet checkups. Something like needing a dental is notorious for throwing a kitty out of remission.

Thank you for your reply. I’m sorry to hear of the loss of your Neko last year :bighug: I definitely plan to keep watching him, and being a helicopter mom! His next vet appointment is already scheduled :cat: I didn’t know that about the dental; I was only worried about pancreatitis or kidney disease! Poor kitties. Getting older isn’t easy, the fact of which I can already attest to. It seems like every day I wake up to find something has slid out of place, is making a noise it didn’t make yesterday, or randomly aches with no known cause!
