I am new to the group and also trying to figure out how this site works.
My cat Bella age almost 8 was diagnosed with diabetes 12/23. (Her brother Edward had emergency surgery for bladder and urethra stones the day before) Ahhh!
The vet send us home with vetsulin and said to give her 1 unit twice a day.
We got very little other info. She had one unit in the vets office and one unit that evening with us. Unfortunately she refused any food and we ended up at the vet emergency. They kept her for 12 very expensive hours and monitored her blood glucose. Her level never dropped below 216. They sent her home off insulin. I saw our regular vet as soon as I could. Her blood glucose was 310. They suggested putting her on a low carb diet. She’s been eating small frequent meals of a tablespoon or so of fancy feast. I can get her to eat every two hours or so. She seemed perkier and then last night was lethargic. I had my husband go out and get a glucose meter. We had absolutely no luck getting a blood sample. We will try again later. So overwhelmed and frustrated. I did find some info about obtaining a blood sample from a cat. A very kind person on this site suggested I join this group. Thanks ahead of time for the support!!

Welcome! You have come to the right place. Your regular vet was right about getting her on a low-carb diet. A low-carb wet diet and home testing are the two most important things you can do. The home testing gets much easier and is well worth it. You can post any questions you have on the main health forum. It would be helpful if you added a signature providing some basic info so that you do not have to repeat it each time you post. Also, you will want to set up a spreadsheet to track test results and doses given. You can include a link to it in your signature so that the info will be available to everyone here should you need advice regarding dosing at some point.

The first time I tried to get a blood sample from Quintus, a very complacent old man, it took me 45 minutes to get anywhere!

Thanks. My husband and I did get a sample last night. Yeah. It was 141. That’s great. This morning was another story. Stuck our poor baby 5 times. Got good blood samples... meter kept reading error. Used FIVE different test strips.
