I am glad I was pointed to this form! My cat Annie has been diagnosed with diabetes. She's Still fat but I am working on it and shes lost a lot of weight. I was in the process of purchasing Lantus for her but was given some information on first taking her blood sugar and get a base line.

I have been able to take 4 readings (through no fault of Annie, I am not a very good blood taker) and they have been 213, 303, 257, and today's was 357 ( I couldn't get the past two days) I would like to get a bit of a better idea on what her blood sugar should be since I have been reading very conflicting things. Also is there anywhere else on the body I can take blood besides the ears. Since her blood sugar is fluctuating so much I am going to say she definitely needs insulin to get it under control and level.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I do have her on some good canned cat food but she still would prefer dried. I don't want her to get fatty liver so I am making sure she does eat. Again she has lost a lot of weight and is more energetic and playful, but has a way to go as of yet.

I will say my biggest concern about giving insulin is the crazy hours I work. I however will not give up my girl, I am just terrified of not being home and her having huge issues.

Her numbers actually aren't super high for a diabetic not on insulin yet, so be sure to stay with a low dose. Normal on a human meter is 50-120 and on a pet meter it's 68-150.

Most of us feed fancy feast classic or Friskies pate. I also make a little bit of dry food called Young Again Zero carb available. You can get a free sample of the food if you ask on Youngagainpetfood.com.

It's possible to test bg from paw pads too.... But the ears are the most common way.

ProZinc may be a better fit then lantus for your tricky schedule as you can usually adjust shot time by an hour early or late.

 

I havent started her on Insulin as of yet, I wanted to get her diet under control first. Still having trouble with that but shes getting better. Been feeding Wellness and Nuvo, she really likes those two and i put literally a sprinkle of dried food out for her to crunch on. I will check on that Young again food. I am using a human meter I got from Walmart Relion which was suggested to me to use due to cost and ease of use.

sounds good! Just wanted to suggest the Prozinc... Lantus works best if you stick to a strict 12 hour schedule... ProZinc is a little more flexible with timing. When you are ready to start insulin discuss it with your vet.

getting rid of the high carb dry all together may be what she needs to get her numbers down just a LITTLE bit more. Keep in mind that on a human meter normal is 50-120. On your vet's pet meter normal is 68-150. If we can help you with anything else, let me know.

In the meantime, setting up a signature like the one you see below my post will give us basic information so we don't have to keep asking the same questions over and over. click on your name at the top right and choose signature. Add information such as your pet's name, age, date diagnosed, insulin you are using (or not using yet in your case), food you are feeding, type of meter you are using, and any other health concerns or medications she's on. then click save.

Welcome amie and annie Prozinc is dosed every 12 hrs . get her on insulin ( prozinc) as soon as possible!! The sooner her blood sugar comes down the better!! Try not to worry , i was nervous at first. Theirs a ton of good info and people on this forum. Get your girl off all dry food!! . friskies , nine lives and fancy feast pates are good . just make sure there low carb ( check out lisa piersons food chart)don't worry about the weight too much , just get her on the right food and the right amount , no need to buy expensive food , just make sure its low carb wet food . try to home test every 12 hours if possible( it gets easier the more you do it and insulin shots are very easy to give.
