Update on Ducky!

Okay, so its been about 3 days since our vet visit, 2 1/2 days with insulin happening. She is doing much better, not as lethargic and anti-social with the 1/2 unit dose, which is such a relief. Ducky is still super skiddish when it comes to feeding and injecting times, but I think she is getting used to it. Ive tried to incorporate some of the pate grain free foods, but both my cats seems to not like it at all. They love their variation and most of the pates I've looked at are chicken based...so I think they get tired of it. So are there any good grain free or diabetic friendly "shreds or bits" options?

I've also taken the advice I've seen in other posts about creating a specific area where she gets her shots, laying out the shot so she can investigate (but we aren't there yet!), and giving her one or two treats afterwards. Is there a "treat" that anyone suggests? I am open to making the treats as well - if anyone has a good recipe!

We are going back to the vet to check her BG levels on Saturday morning, so hopefully things are calming down and if the numbers are still relatively high, I will most likely look into getting a meter to lessen the expense/stress of vet visits.

 

I can't help you with this. I think there are a couple of Fancy Feast slightly chunkier low carb wet foods but don't know more than that. Grain free doesn't necessarily mean low carb so read labels carefully and check this excellent list:

You can buy a variety of freeze dried meat/fish treats in pet stores. Pure Bites is one common brand. I buy Orijen brand freeze dried treats for my guy. Many people roast or poach a plain chicken breast and cut it into small pieces for treats. The pieces can be frozen and taken out as needed.

 

Yes, the vet visits just to test blood - they must be expensive. The majority of us on the forum test at home for $1/day or less.

Most cats are probably skittish during the initial diabetes treatments. They settle down over time. Leo has a dedicated towel in the kitchen. He knows test/dose time is also food time. Now he goes right to the towel and waits for the test. Then he gets fed right after that, and I dose him during feeding.

For pilling. We pill him. Then we give him freeze dried chicken treats. It's just plain chicken. We could probably make the "treats" ourselves.

 

Fancy feast chunky chicken has a different texture as does the flaked line and are still low carb. Look at the chart for specifics.
