Has this ever happened to anyone else?
I was so concerned about Jester's first AMPS of 528, I decided to try again.
Same ear within about one minute the reading was 403.

    Thoughts?

looks like a case for a 3rd check, if possible... (not much experience with cats here, but in humans yes)

I gave him his insulin over an hour ago and he's been nibbling for almost half an hour now.

Not sure how valid a third testing would be at this point. But maybe I'll try that for a later test.

I am curious, however, if others have ever experienced readings of this kind?

I'm currently using generic test strips. I did do some research, including speaking with my diabetic niece, before buying them.

Another member of this board does use the same strips. I tagged her and replied to her post to ask about her experiences with the strips, but she never responded.

tbh, I'm thinking of doing tomorrow's AMPS with both the OEM (I still have a quantity of them) strips and the generics just to see how much of a fluke this might have been.

Sometimes you can get a dodgy strip, even when using OEM strips and this may yield test results which are higher or lower than one might be expecting.

If you get a questionable result test again immediately (especially if it's a low number you're concerned about). If you get a number significantly different than the initial questionable result, test a third time. If the 2nd and 3rd tests are in the same ball park that will lend more support to the first one being most likely a rogue result.

Totally normal....all meters are allowed a 20% variance, so even if you're using the same meter on the same drop of blood at the same time you can get different numbers.

528 could be as low as 422

403 could be as high as 484

See how those numbers relate to each other?

At those high numbers, you can get those bigger differences and it looks like something is wrong but it's usually not.

Luckily, at the low numbers (the ones most important for safety) they're usually a lot closer together!!

I get it with the AlphaTrak, in the higher numbers especially. It is the reason I do not like to use those. I do not get that with my Accuchek, it is always true to itself within a few points (the allowed 20% variance should be from OTHER meters not from itself, they should be consistent in their own testing). On one of the first days with are new foster I got a 423 so I retested and got a 316. Because of the big variance I retested and got a 360. In the middle but still 3 wide ranging numbers so I switched over to one of my Accuchek meters.

When you are that high the variance doesn't mean that much, you reaction to both numbers will be the same - too high.

I use the OneTouch and that's the highest rated human meter on Consumer Reports. I don't know how much the brand of test strips matter overall with the number variance.

Wow! I didn't realize that 20% could make this kind of difference. It's a bit of a relief. I used the lower number on the spreadsheet and sort of felt like I was cheating....

If taking multiple readings at the one time it's not a bad idea to record all of the test results in the Remarks column on the spreadsheet. That way you'll have a record of all data. :)

I'm so anal retentive, I already did that. *g*
I even kept a record of when we tested Jester twice at the vet's office - once with my meter and once with the vet's.

Took two readings this evening with two different pokes in the ear (because I forgot I was going to do it).
First was 355, second was 327.
I'll do it one more time tomorrow morning just to be sure.
