Adventure this week

I've been writing on the Facebook FDMB board about what was going on this week with CC, but haven't really said anything here... but I know many of you don't look there that are here, so I thought I'd update on the crazy happenings here this week.

So this week has been an adventure to say the least. My cat CC up until this week has been very predictable. Then Monday night three hours after her shot I got a shock to test her and see she was in a pretty low hypo (no symptoms at all). 44 on an alphatrack. I threw honey in her face, and put her in a carrier and headed off for the emergency vet, which fortunately is only a half mile down the road. They gave her dextrose and put her on a dextrose drip for a few hours and kept her overnight. (they also did a blood panel, which, other then "sllight" dehydration, looked good with everything else. I can post the bloodwork later if anyone is interested.) Took her home the next morning. No shots the next day, she was low on her own, under 100 the following evening.

Vet told me do about half ner usual dose. I did LESS then half what I would usually give her wed morning... my son and I were getting ready for work/school... coats on, about to leave the house. I decided to test her again 2 hours after the shot not expecting to see much difference and BOOM! 44 again. Again NO symptoms (she's looking at me like I'm a crazy person freaking out). Change of plans, back to the ER which was fortunately still open for another half hour because my regular vet wasn't open yet. Another shot of dextrose, then I took her to my reg vet afterwards for monitoring. I haven't given her a shot since then... I was afraid to while no one was home with her being hyper reactive to it... and since then she's stayed between 121-205 on her own. If she goes over 180-200 this weekend while I'm home (thankfully it's a 3 day weekend with Martin Luther King day) I'll shoot just a tiny .25 This morning she was a decent 155.... but has been seeming to lower down by evening herself so I'll be curious to see what it is tonight. It's really interesting. and nerve wracking. Up until now she's been so predictable. Just goes to prove again how important it is to test!! And listen to your inner voice... I wasn't going to bother testing at the +2 on wed cuz I didn't think there'd be much change, but I'm glad I listened to my gut and did. The older I get the more I've learned to trust that inner gut feeling.

Last year when she went into remission it was a nice gentle tapering down and I just gradually lowered the dose until she was off it. this time she's crashing like a brick. lol crazy

So wish us luck that her numbers come down on her own.... or that she doesn't sink like crazy if we do need to dose her! lol

 

Thank goodness you tested and caught those lows!!!! Fingers and paws crossed CC will come down gently!

 

My goodness, Janet! Thank heavens your gut told you to get those tests in! I've wondered where you've been the last several days. I hope CC can ease herself back into remission with a little less drama ...

 

less drama would be good. Even this morning she's already down to 136 on her own. The other day she went from 194 to 122 in two hours on her own despite grazing on her fancy feast in that time. Now if I had given her a little shot at 194 she may have dropped too low. driving me nuts. hahahhaa I'm hoping she'll just go under 150 and STAY there.

 

btw, the er vet was SO SO impressed with the spreadsheet... she said she never saw such a dedicated diabetic cat home owner, and went on and on about how wonderful the spreadsheet is...... I have THIS site to thank for that.

Good thing you listened to your gut! Those asymptomatic hypos are really scary, I know. Hope she settles into good numbers without needing any more juice!

Now, Miss CC, a little less drama for your Mama, please, you're scaring her!

Remission is great.. drama or no drama!!! I hope it 'sticks'. I'm glad you caught and dealt with the 44s before they went any lower. Mia had a 44 at +4 once, and I had her up to 123 within 30 mins with Karo and m/d kibble to sustain it, but getting a 44 even earlier in the cycle is definitely scary.

Wow! Thank goodness for gut feelings!!!!! Glad everything is better. Hope weekend goes smoothly.

 

Exactly. If it happened at 4 or 5 I may have tried to handle it, but I thought it wasn't worth the risk just to save some vet bills.

 

And that second time when I caught it at +2 she was in the 50's, I feed her carbs and 10 min later was 44. No way I was handling that one. Luckily getting the dextrose was quick as her arm was already shaved from the first time. Saved a few min. Lol

 

wow, get this... just tested, no insulin for several days, and just got a 72. WHOO HOO.

 

That is awesome!

Hi Janet,
I read before that a Hypo, or was it in a case of a symptomatic ones only?, pushed some cats into remission. Something to do with changed insulin sensitivity... I hope that's the case for CC and she is back into the Falls in no time!
PS. The SS looks awesome!

 

We have seen that happen here. I suspect it happens in cases like mine with a sputtering pancreas. Fingers crossed.

 

That second time I went back it was the same dr and one of the same techs... They are like you're back? I thought you were just coming in to let us know how she's doing.
I was a bit embarrassed to have to go back to be honest. But it's what she needed. They are really great there though. In the 10 years they have been there, fortunately this is the first time I ever needed them. It's a comfort knowing I have an after hours place just minutes away. The next closest one would take at least 20-25 min to get to.

 

Boy do I relate to this. Our vets provide full cover their out of hours (via telephone and at the surgery). I'm screamingly agoraphobic and haven't driven for years (accident). It means a great deal to me that our vets are only a few minutes walk away (especially as there is no taxi service late at night or during the small hours where I live).
