Also, should YA be refrigerated with such high fat content? The bag says it can be left out for 7 days so I assume not, but I have been refrigerating it.
I'm feeding them LID Zero Mature.

I am feeding my cat YA mature, i leave the bowel for free feeding and it does not effect her BG at all.

Young again doesn't raise my cats bg more than a few digits. You want to look at the dry matter analysis. See below. 18A888D6-76D1-45E3-9CA8-FEA8F7141CDB.png

Yes I refrigerate the 4 # bag. I guess I really don't need too. Was just asking if anyone else did.

I bet that Dr. Lisa does not approve of YA because it's dry, but my kitties are literally begging for food all day long if I don't feed them this. This food seems to satisfy them so they can go longer between meals. Maybe FF classic isn't as balanced as it needs to be. I've wondered if cats need more fat in their food than they've been getting.

For me, I've noticed that I can plow through an entire medium sized bag of cheezits over the course of a day and never get full, still want more. But (I hope this doesn't leave you grossed out) when I add a small sliver of kerrygold butter to only TWO cheezits, I'm good! I guess fat is what I came for, and when I got it I didn't want anymore.

Thanks for posting this. On the front of my bag it lists the components in a paragraph form not a list like you have. That probably came from the site, I'm guessing. I figured that fiber would be the carbs.

Terri, I am so sorry about your dear little Peyton. It is so hard to loose a child. I believe with all my heart that we will be reunited with all our fur babies at the Rainbow Bridge. My thoughts and prayers are with you.:bighug:

Just curious - is Young Again okay for cats who've had a blockage?
Prior to his diagnosis, Jester was on Hill's prescription C/D cat food and he liked that a lot. But I'm hesitant to give him other dry foods because of the risk of another blockage.

I'm really starting to wonder if YA is what has caused my kitties diarrhea lately. I looked back at my previous post and saw that I had ordered LID Mature to start with. They had soft stools at first on that and I kept it in the fridge because of the high fat content and worrying about it going rancid. But with subsequent orders, I mistakenly ordered just Mature. I'm mortified that the customer service person told another member on this thread that she was to blame for her kitty's problems. That makes me feel bad about this product. They eat so much less FF now and so it's saving me money in one way although costing me a bit more in another.

It can give them the runs if they eat too much of it. I put a little of it in this to prevent her from eating it too much or too fast.

I just got a new bag of the YA LID Mature which is what I got to start with. If this bag still causes tummy upsets I'm done with YA. I'll put less in their bowl too to see if that helps. They really do not overeat this stuff so it must be satiating. But something sure caused Ned to have diarrhea. I've been adding a very tiny amount of S. Boulardii to their wet food and it's already helped him. No more explosions!

I also did not know that you have to shake the bag of YA every time you give them some, because it disperses the enzymes and probiotics that may have settled during shipment. That has helped some too.

@JanetNJ did you say your kitty is now back on insulin? If so, so you think YA has anything to do with it?

When I went to a pet store to look at their low carb wet food, the guy there told me that everything that is high in protein is bad for diabetic cats because it turns into carbs. He said higher carb food is better than high protein food! o_O Sure!

My cat went back on insulin 5 months ago. I think a dental problem and painful arthritis is what knocked her out of remission. I have not changed her diet in a year and a half.

on my 2nd bag of Young Again zero mature and my cat just went 36 days with no shots and counting! I Free feed her, also it last a long time. It took her awhile to figure out not to eat too much as it will give her diarrhea, I have 2 cats one older who is diabetic and a male cat who is not. I leave it out for both and also give the male cat canned FF cause he likes the canned and she likes the dry.

That's great! I wish I could get mine to just eat YA. I reordered the LID this time and hope along with shaking the bag (which redistributes the flavorings, probiotics and enzymes) that my kitties do well with it. They don't act like they like it very much but they will eat it, and it gives them that crunch they were used to. They eat so much less canned food now, but they do like their canned food! Trying to switch them to raw, but not having the easiest time with it. Various levels of acceptance from each kitty.

I am having the same experience and am also turned off by the Young Again customer service. Recently my cats both became ill concurrent with opening new bag of YA Zero Mature. After removing that food they've improved. They are now doing better on Origen (Fit & Trim for diabetic cat. It's 16 per cent carb, but low glycemic, I think. They also get low carb pate wet food x 2 per day. Both cats doing much better off the YA Zero Mature.

    Hi Janet,

Is this the Dr. Elsey's food you're talking about:

    https://www.drelseys.com/learn-more/chicken-recipe/

I ask because there was someone else earlier today asking for a food recommendation and if this is the right Dr. Elsey's variety I can pass on the link to her. :)

As you mention this percentage YA has a regular formula which contsin less than 6% carb but they says on there site that it is still high if you want your cat to go into remission.

At first i thought i can try it as maybe it contains much flavor than zero carb which might make my cat like it more then i hesitate when read their comments!!

That's an unabashed marketing claim - and blanket statements like this are potentially dangerous. Young Again have no idea whatsoever of the clinical histories of all cats who might be fed their diets. (I actually dislike they way they do the hard sell on "Young Again food = Greater Chance of Remission Than Anything Else in the World.")

Very low or ultra-low carb diets do not suit all cats. Indeed, some cats enjoy much better, smoother regulation when fed a diet in the 7-10% range. ECID. Indeed, if a cat is seriously underweight and experiencing wild swings in BG (even on microdoses of insulin) they may actually require a diet higher in carbs in order to enable them to safely receive enough insulin to keep them ketone-free and out of frequent hypo numbers and also to support much-needed weight gain at a faster rate.

This is new information to me, so you said it is ok to feed my cat 10% carbs canned food, because we do not have here wide range of FF but other brands with 9-10% carbs and my cat is on drop dose ( she was doing very well and stay on green most of the day) but now she is jumbing to blue which i di not know why!!

But sometimes i feed het 10% carb and free feed YA , could this cause that high. I never had problem with YA before.

It's impossible to say whether or not the YA may be influencing the higher BGs you're seeing. In the first instance, cats' insulin needs may change over time. You need to track BG and food carb % in tandem to spot any potential correlation between pattern of response to insulin and the carb % of foods offered. For example, my Saoirse did much better on 4% carbs and I was able to determine this pattern from the information I recorded in her spreadsheet. Keeping brief notes on clinical signs can also be very informative when trying to figure out why response pattern changes (and may give an early warning of possible infections, etc. which might be brewing under the surface).

If there's nothing obvious which might be elevating the BGs then a bit of trial and error with different feeding choices may help you determine what best suits your kitty.

yes. The salmon one is higher in carb. The chicken one they say is 5%. It's cheaper on chewy.com

Will do that. She will have dental cleaning and one teeth extraction by next week and full blood and urine test. Will see what comes out of the lab work.

Dental issues are often the culprit when BG starts trending upwards. Looking at her spreadsheet she's doing really well overall. Her numbers will hopefully improve even further once her tooty-pegs are sorted out. :)

I do not think my cat went into remission due to YA food. Lowering carbs seems important and we should do it, but it can't be the only factor. Food safety, quality, food components. Insulin match & quality. Exercise. Oxygen. Caregiving. And, ECID! I don't know enough to give you advice but I do wish you well.
