    Sort of right.....ProZinc doesn't have a "depot"

    But no shot=no hypo

    I am always cautious about “no shot = no hypo”. Chris is correct that ProZinc doesn’t have a depot like lantus and levemir but it does appear to have some residual action in some cats. Insofar as saying “no shot = no hypo” in lantus or levemir, I would not ever say that, if the PS BG was too low to shoot, because of the depot. For PZ, if the PS BG was too low to shoot, I would be really cautious and be sure the BG was coming up.

    @Marje and Gracie -

    We had a very good example of that with Ringo's recent hypo (FH thread). His numbers were very hard to keep up (no gravy food or high carb wet available plus nausea/appetite issues) but he was still in the low 50s at the time of the next preshot and his caregiver wisely brought him in to the vets for monitoring while she was at work. He had only returned to the low 100s several hours later in spite of the dose being skipped (not sure about what interventions, if any, the vets may have used to get it to that level).

    With Saoirse, I've also seen some carryover of effect in Caninsulin.

    Fyi, that kitty hadn't had juice in couple of days, not just a cycle or two, and I came seeking advise specifically because my only knowledge of prozinc is it's name and it's an in and out. basically the good numbers were scary to her. Just to clarify.

    Thanks, Heidi. I noted that as I was helping Tina with the SS but I wanted to just correct the statement of “no shot = no hypo” in general.

    I actually do not think of PZ as much as an “in and out” insulin as I do Vetsulin, Caninsulin, Normalin/Humulin N and R as it has longer duration than the others and can tend, in some cats, to have a “residual” effect, for lack of a better term since there is no depot which equates to the L insulins. :):):)

    Just trying to keep the record straight as it’s easy to see the FDMB Urban Legends get passed around :p:p:smuggrin:
