Rupert's PM sugar was 122. Fed him went to 177. Do I give him insulin?

@Djamila - if you're online could you help out here, please?

Had a gander at Rupert's spreadsheet and tonight's PMPS is a real surprise.

Just in case you don't get a response from other members with Prozinc experience, I'll include some general thoughts:

    1. The PMPS is way lower than anything else in Rupert's PMPS BG history, and it's already quite low.

    2. Because you fed before taking the 177 test you now can't tell whether Rupert was rising at PMPS time.

Other members with Prozinc experience would possibly be able to better advise you whether a reduced dose might be OK, but if you don't hear from anyone else I'd suggest skipping tonight's dose. (And, if possible, do a urine ketone test as a precaution.)

So you know he's rising which is great. Are you around tonight to monitor (get some extra tests?) If so, I would go ahead and shoot with maybe just a slight reduction to 2.75 or 3 (whichever you're most comfortable with). You'll need to get a +2 test to see if he starts dropping too soon, and then probably a +4 as well. If you can't monitor like that then I would give a 50% dose.

Higher BG is food-influenced, not a natural rise.

Yes, but it still indicates that the insulin will be grabbing onto a higher number. Sometimes food spikes are helpful.

@Rupert_09 , are you online still? I have a couple of questions before you shoot.

I am around all night. I can test him however many times I need. Gonna do 2.75. Will check again at 10pm then again 2am.

I'm actually wondering if you're overdosing Rupert right now. You're getting a lot of bouncing which is inconsistent with a normal prozinc response and can indicate too much insulin.

You have some flat, non-responsive cycle which make it look like not enough insulin, but then you have these random dives. I think he might be on too high of a dose. Either that, or is he eating anything besides the FF? What treats (if any) are you using?

No treats at all and he only eats Fancy Feast Classic Paté. His brother Leo is on the same food. It was impossible to keep Rupert out of Leo's food. So I switched Leo to Fancy feast classic paté as well. Our dog's food is In a air tight container and is fed in my daughter's room ad Lucy is her dog. Any extra treats Lucy gets is for training and absolutely will not allow Rupert to have any (food agression).

Could he get into any dog food? Or his lil Brother's food? If he isn't getting carbs, then I'm back to suspecting the insulin. Have you injected yet? If not, I'd actually revise my earlier thoughts and suggest 2u. If you have, don't worry, just keep an eye on him.

I would suggest posting a thread in the Prozinc group. I'd like to have some of the other folks over there take a look at his spreadsheet too and see if they see the same thing I'm seeing, or not.

I'm guessing he'll be fine, but glad you're going to keep an eye on him. Hope to see you over in Prozinc-land sometime soon! He has a really interesting spreadsheet and I think it would be good to get some other opinions on it.

@Critter Mom, thanks for the tag - I almost never look out here. Glad you're helping watch over folks out here!

I'd like to learn more about this when you have a little time, Djamila. Also, how dosing decisions might be influenced in circumstances such as this one.

I started typing an explanation, but it is getting really really long, and I'm afraid my fever brain is struggling to make sure it's coherent (I've caught a nasty bug this week :blackeye:). I think it's an important conversation though and I'd like to get back to it soon, but I'm afraid of putting something out into the thread that could confuse someone. Remind me again soon if I don't get back to this!
