Hi. Willow was given Cerenia to help with nausea from antibiotics after having an anal sac rupture a while back. I found that during the time she was taking it, she was not having breathing episodes like normal (basically asthma attacks). Also, she was a fairly frequent vomiter in the past, possibly related to her 'slow gastric emptying'. It is better since she is on a quality wet food diet, but it still happens occasionally. Anyway, fast forward to now... I was fortunate to get a box of 4 24mg Cerenia tablets, and I have been giving her 1/4 of a tablet every other day or every second day. It seems to be just enough to help her. I have not had the slightest issue giving them to her - and this is a cat who H-A-T-E-S to be given pills. It is such a small sliver of a tablet and has a texture that pretty much falls apart easily/quickly. I am able to just stick it in her mouth with my finger then let her eat a few treats right away, and she goes on as though nothing happened.

Well, not this morning. I proceeded to give her the pill as normal, but immediately after I did, she started foaming at the mouth. I mean a LOT, foamy drool just oozing out and hanging off her mouth. I grabbed a warm, wet cloth and picked her up and started wiping it. I also attempted to give her some water via syringe though most ended up on my baby's chin and neck. It was so pitiful and scary. It seemed to go on for several minutes. I cleaned and dried it up as much as possible, and she finally stopped and settled down. She had no interest in her usual treats which she is normally quite happy to gobble up right after the pill, and she also would not eat warm bone broth with shredded chicken which she normally loves (she seemed nauseated at that point - initially interested but licked her lips and did not eat). I feel so bad. :( This was so unexpected and scary. Has anyone else had this happen? Why would it happen this time when it never has before?? She has been sleeping since. I hope she will be ready to eat something at lunch time. If not, I am going to be really worried. I do not know that I will want to risk giving her Cerenia again even though until now it has been great.

My vet told me that Cerenia will do this if not given in something and swallowed immediately. She said it's very bitter too.

It is so odd that we have not had this happen until now. I did not do anything different. It is good to know that this is a known issue though. It was so scary!

I give my kitty Buddy cerenia, but all of the pills I give him I put in empty gelatin capsules size #4, that I buy from Thriving Pets, these can also bought at several other on line stores. By using the gelatin capsules it stops the foaming at the mouth when giving medicine. The capsules can be bought in different sizes, #4 is a smaller size. I hope this helps you & Willow.

Baby does this if I fail to get the pill on the back of the tongue. She did it with the pepsid this morning & I got a small amt of water (between the foam & slimey drool) down her. Some cats do this if a little breaks up in the mouth or like this am, I think she bit the Pepcid. The vet says it’s mostly with bitter pills but Baby does this with almost every one I’ve ever given her unless it’s practically thrown down her throat! No worries, it happens. It’s not as bad if she eats a treat; quickly, but I couldn’t give her any this morning! I’m sure shes Ok & it is scary the first time they do this!

She is currently eating some shredded chicken in bone broth. I feel a little better.

The first couple of times I gave Phoebe cerenia we had that exact thing happen. I thought I killed her. So I got the gel caps. Never a problem since. It is scary. Big hugs:bighug::bighug:

This seems to be common with a lot of medications. It depends a lot like a previous person said where the pill goes. If I get Leo's pill far enough back it's ok, but if I miss he ends up chewing it and excess saliva comes drooling out.

I have given her just the pill piece before, BUT when I thought about it, I have more often given it with her TDC supplement. The supplement is a 'goop' that is squeezed from a little heart shaped thing. I usually squeeze up a little bit and stick the pill piece in it. Then, I squeeze the entire supplement into her mouth. Obviously, that supplement was what was coating it enough to prevent this. Note to self - always give Cerenia in TDC! Thank you all for your responses.
